Site's Been Down, Eh?

Looks like no one's posted since yesterday morning my time, i.e. about 18 hours ago.

Considering my failed attempts to reach anyone in the OOTPD chain of command over the past few weeks, I admit this had me a little worried.

Good to see we're back online now. Hope to hear from you guys shortly.

(Btw, I've been away for some time myself, so I really have no room to point fingers. )

Hey guys, sorry, looks like for some unknown reason the apache web server software was not running. Restarting it fixed the problem.

It took at least 15 hours. Its in excusable that the sight was down this long. Either more people need to be able to reset the site or the powers that be must check more often.

Unfortunately, it is absolutely not as easy as "reset the site".

Well, Bababui made seven posts since the site is running again. One to rant about inexcusable server downtime, and six in the OT thread "Well, who was the last person to post in that thread? (II)"

Clearly an expert on web hosting maintenance and diagnosis he is (although he is right 15 hours is a wee bit high for resolution of something non-hardware related....now hardware? oh boy...)

You have no idea how important it was to find out who the last person to post in that thread (II) was!

FWIW, there was a 15-18 hour window where he did not troll.

This is inexcusable, when there are so many spellcheckers and grammar checkers available at no cost that take little effort and require much less than 15 hours to run.

However, these types of errors are difficult to detect and resolve because, standing alone, they appear flawless; the world we live in is not.

tsk... less can only be used on single items, so it's 'require fewer than 15 hours to run'

Actually it's less not fewer when speaking of time: link.

There are exceptions to these rules; for example, it is customary to use the word less to describe time, money, and distance. For example, you could say, “That wedding reception lasted less than two hours. I hope they paid the band less than $400.” So keep in mind that time, money, and distance are different, but if you stick with the quick and dirty tip that less is for mass nouns and fewer is for count nouns, you'll be right most of the time.
Woo hoo! The English degree gets put to good use for once...

Depends on whether the 15 hours is being regarded as one block of 15 hours or 15 blocks of one hour. Since I regard the downtime as being of immeasurable at point of commencement I find it easier to deal in multiples of a small block rather than a big time block.

I reckon it was time for a board crash. They happen about twice annually.
