I just played a game where my pitcher was credited with a save, that he probably shouldn't have been. He did pitch 2 innings, but he entered the 9th inning with a 8-2 lead, and the opposition did not get anyone on base in the 9th. The only way this could be considered a "save" would be to say the official scorer considered him to pitch effectively when entering the game with a lead, however this is usually for at least 3 innings and is rarely used IRL since most relievers almost never pitch more than 2 innings anymore...
Just something that needs to be looked at---he should not have received a save in this situation, IMHO...

A save is credited based on when the pitcher enters the game, not what the score is in the 9th. If it was a save situation when the pitcher entered the game and he finishes the game without surrendering the lead, he will be credited with a save. I assume it was 3 runs or less lead going into the 8th. This rule is true in real life as well.

This is indeed what happened then...I was leading 4-2 going into the 8th, and then scored 4 additional runs in the bottom of the 8th to make it 8-2...

Did he enter the game with a lead of 3 runs or less?
Did he finish the game without relinquishing the lead? If yes, he gets the save, the second stupidest stat in baseball. |

The stupidest stat is obviously the Win (for pitchers).

As this is how the save rule is supposed to work, this thread will be closed for housekeeping purposes.
