Name The Teams (Oklahoma City, OK & Los Angeles, CA)

I know all of the previous names of the city's teams. But this team is being marketed as more of an Oklahoma team, with a nod in trying to attract fans from Amarillo and Arkansas. So...if we can come up with a name that doesn't offend them or overemphasize the Oklahoma part of it and try to make it more generally regional, that'd be great.

The Los Angeles ballclub will play in the same neighborhood as the old Wrigley Field in LA that was eventually razed.

In both cases, I have no idea what to call them (short of the obvious names that I could go to Wikipedia and get) so...as usual, I'm leaning on the peanut gallery to give some ideas...

Well you did say from the peanut gallery.

The Angels still exist, they just moved to San Bernardino. So that name is off-limits. But...I did consider the Stars, after the ol' Hollywood Stars of the original PCL.

My fictional OKC and LA teams are called the Oklahoma Dust Devils and the Los Angeles Toros, respectively, although I've also used the name L.A. Mustangs in the past. (I like the sound of it better, but I ended up needing the name 'Mustangs' for a franchise in a different city.) Of course, 'Dust Devils' is a dust bowl reference - my logo is a little red tornado with horns and a pointy tail - and 'Toros' pays homage to the Latino heritage of the L.A. area. Like I said, 'Mustangs' just rolls off the tongue really well. Plus, it refers to the horse AND the car. And isn't L.A. practically synonymous with sports cars?

One other thing. My personal preference is to avoid nicknames that are currently being used by any other of the big 4 major league sports. It forces you to be a little more creative. Besides, it allows the team to enjoy its own unique identity.

Anyway... just my two-bits

I'd have to go with Los Angeles Stars. Just sounds right.

I second these two.

In my latest fictional league, inspired by darkcloud's dynasty by the way, I already added an expansion team to the LA market and called them the Stars (after I moved the Dodgers to Riverside and renamed them the Racers after California's love of cars). The only difference is I went with the old PCL name, the Hollywood Stars. I like the history aspect and I also like how its more obvious what the name is referring to.

Meanwhile, the Oklahoma City Outlaws sounds cool and definitely does go with the cowboys and outlaws history of the region.

LA Western Stars/LA Golden Stars/LA Stars is one of my default LA names.

OK City we were just having a discussion on a different forum concerning the possible loss of the Sonics to OKC, and we were tossing names about and liked Oklahoma City Twisters there.

Now if you're trying to pull in he Arkansas crowd, toss the word 'Diamond' in in some manner and you wind up making a small nod to one of that states claims to fames.

Oklahoma Diamond Cutters - or Cutters for short, which also would bring in a cross-meaning with cutting herds for cattle, echoing the cowboy heritage of the area.

This was my choice as well, tornadoes run rampant in Oklahoma.

The state's heritage as the Indian Territory could also inspire many names, if that's not offensive to you.

What about the Oklahoma Pilots? Giving a nod to the Air Force presence in both Oklahoma City (Tinker AFB) and Little Rock (Little Rock AFB)...

I also liked that Diamond Cutters idea. It's a long name, but...I like how it could just refer to the baseball diamond or even just the Cutters name, which is a great reference to western heritage.

Just to throw out something to build on... didn't the Cherokee have a stick and ball game? I don't know how close it was to baseball, but I thought it might have potential for finding a name.

It's more like lacrosse. I just googled it to see.

For the sake of realism, I'd avoid using "City" in the Oklahoma team's name. I would imagine the owners of a real team in OKC would want to forge an identity with the rest of the state, especially the Tulsa market, considering Tulsa's metro area population is only slightly less than OKC's. (They may even want to build the team's stadium a few dozen miles up I-44 to the NE to at least give the impression they are seriously targeting Tulsa fans.)

Keep in mind that of the last 4 expansion teams, 3 were named for the STATE they're located in, not just the city.

We're on the same page for sure. Team wouldn't work economically if it didn't pull from Tulsa and to a lesser extent, the outlying areas of the region.
