Would You Fire Me?
In my sim league, www.hblbaseball.com, I am the Calgary Storm (formerly the Montreal Expos).
We just finished our 23rd season of play. I have been the franchise GM for all 23 seasons of the league's existence. I have 3 World Series Titles (3 appearances, won all 3 in 4-year span), and a total of 17 playoff appearances in 23 seasons. Since my last WS title in 2008 (we just finished 2023), I have made the playoffs 10 times in 15 seasons. However, I have not won a single 2nd round playoff game in that entire 15-year span. In fact, I've only made the 2nd round one time and I was swept! I've never had the best team in the league. I typically have had a mid-level payroll. I don't ever try to go out and sign all the best players. I have a lot more fun trying to find bargains and winning with them. I enjoy having a crappy 5th starter and I don't go out and try to dominate every season. I'd rather win with a mediocre team. So I consistently win my division (13 division titles) or win the Wildcard but I cannot get over that hump to the 2nd round. It's very strange how well my pitching staff can pitch over 162 games and then stink it up in the playoffs. My bullpen has been lights out for almost 10-seasons and then I get nothing out of them in the playoffs, it seems. I have the most wins of any GM in the league's history. Of course, I'm one of the few that have been there the whole time. So do you think I would be fired? I'd be happy to answer any questions before you place your vote. Here's my Cato reference page, although it doesn;t incude the past 2 years because OOTP2007 doesn't support it (grin). http://www.hblbaseball.com/cato/refe...cgy/index.html WOULD YOU FIRE ME???????

Yes - because if I were the owner I would not give a rat's arse about winning JUST the division. It is lights out if you can't bring home the big cheese.....

The owner's probably as much to blame for moving the team from Montréal to Calgary.

No.
With your record of winning multi WS titles before, and your being in the race all the time, I would not fire you if I were the owner. However, I am curious how you are doing with financials, too.

Yes, I've pretty much had the maximum available cash that is allowed by the league for every year of the league's existence. I have been very fiscally responsible and successful. My fan interest has hovered between 85-100 for the great majority of my tenure. I've had pretty good luck finding very good players, some superstars, for WELL below the league average salary.

Our top payrolls in the league are typically around 80-85m. I'm typically around 60-65m but have been in the 70-75 in recent years. That being said, I could have easily went out and spent another 30m and bought myself a championship but thats not what I'm about. I try to build within and add needed parts in free agency.
I've never gone out and signed a primo free agent. However, I've signed mediocre guys and turned them into top tier players quite often.

If we were in the MLB, probably not. Still a great fanbase; making me lots of money, a top-tier franchise. However, after being so close, I'd probably get frustrated, and most likely pull you in the office and tell you I expected a couple more championships.
Now, if I was the owner of a team in an OOTP-solo league team. Absolutely. I'd fire you. There is no reason to have only 3 titles in 23 years, and none in 15. So, yeah - I'd have fired you a couple years ago .

Yes, I'm sorry it doesn't appear you have what it takes to go all the way in this league, we thank you for your service but we're going to go in another direction

I would fire you because in this scenario you made a very rude comment to my wife at a banquet. She didn't stop crying for three hours. Titles or no titles, we can't have that kind of behavior on my ballclub.
