A Royals Look-in..from the beginning again
Well, here goes with my second try at this. At least this time I've already checked the schedule prior to finishing spring training!
![]() 01.02.1969 Trade between Atlanta and St. Louis Braves get: C Tim McCarver C Ted Simmons Cardinals get: 1B Orlando Cepeda P Garry Hill Guess the Birds wanted the Baby Bull back, but I would've held onto Simmons. Doesn't look like a good deal to me. Trade between Philadelphia and New York Phillies get: C Jerry Grote Mets get: 3B Rick Joseph The Phils pick up a solid backstop in exchange for a career minor leaguer. Advantage, Philly! 01.04.1969 Trade between San Francisco and St. Louis Giants get: 2B Julian Javier Cardinals get: CF Willie Mays Well, the Cards get the name Mays, but not much else. Maybe they can squeeze a couple years out of Willie, but Javier should stabilize the Giants second base position until youngster Don Mason is ready to play. Trade between Washington and Cleveland Senators get: C Ken Suarez Indians get: LF Brant Alyea Backup for backup. Not much to say about this trade. 01.06.1969 Trade between Minnesota and St. Louis Twins get: CF Curt Flood P Reggie Cleveland Cardinals get: SS Leo Cardenas C Tom Tischinski Guess this is the trade where the Cards get their catcher. Yeesh. Guess the Birds are in the middle of rebuild mode at this point. Actually, if they were, they shouldn't have traded Simmons away. Last edited by RoyalsBlue; 05-17-2007 at 10:34 AM. |

Trade between Cincinnati and Montreal Reds get: 1B Donn Clendenon Expos get: SS Woody Woodward Clendenon will solidify the Reds infield and it appears Montreal will switch Woodward to second base as he's the best option there. A solid trade for both teams, but the edge must go to Cincy as they get the better offensive option. Trade between Washington and San Diego Senators get: P Dick Kelley Padres get: C Jim French Welcome to the world of non descript trades Trade between Oakland and California Athletics get: P Eddie Fisher 3b Aurelio Rodriguez Angels get: 2B Ted Kubiak 01.24.1969 Trade between Kansas City and San Diego Royals get: P Tommie Sisk SS Rafael Robles Padres get: 2B Luis Alcaraz Time will tell on this deal, but one thing for sure about this trade is that Robles can’t be any worse of a hitter than Alcaraz has been. Sisk will compete for a spot in the bullpen. |

Trade between Kansas City and New York Royals get: SS Tom Tresh P Ron Klimkowski Yankees get: P Steve Jones C Buck Martinez IMO,the key to this trade is Martinez. Even though the Yankees have Thurman Munson, Buck would make an outstanding backup and certainly provide good depth for the Bronx Bombers. KC? I don’t see why they made this trade. Trade between Baltimore and Philadelphia Orioles get: P Woodie Fryman Phillies get: C Ellie Hendricks 02.15.1969 INJURY NEWS Washington Senators pitcher Jan Dukes will be out for a couple weeks after suffering a concussion in a fall at his home. 02.16.1969 INJURY NEWS The Atlanta Braves will be without the services of shortstop Gil Garrido for up to 3 weeks after hyper-extending his elbow. Unconfirmed rumors indicate that it happened during a game of Frisbee. 02.19.1969 INJURY NEWS California will be without CF Jay Johnstone after he got beaned in batting practice. The Angels outfielder will be out for at least 2 weeks. Atlanta’s Gil Garrido just isn’t having a good week. He got jumped while walking down the street and suffered a fractured wrist, which is expected to keep him out up to a month. 02.28.1969 Trade between Pittsburgh and San Diego Pirates get: P Tom Dukes Padres get: 2B Jose Martinez |

Trade between St. Louis and Baltimore Cardinals get: 2b Davey Johnson Orioles get: P Nelson Briles Looks like Davey is the Redbirds replacement for Javier. Solid trade for both teams. 03.02.1969 ST Game 1 @ Cleveland Indians L 6-3 LP-Hedlund (0-1) HR-Mike Fiore (1), Joe Foy (1) A four run third inning for the Indians was just too much for the Royals to overcome. Starter Mike Hedlund gave up five runs, four of them earned, in his four inning stint. Joe Foy was named player of the game with two hits in three at-bats with a homer and two rbi’s. INJURY NEWS Chicago Cubs outfielder Oscar Gamble will miss up to a month after injuring his knee. Initial reports indicate that the injury is a torn meniscus. 03.03.1969 ST Game 2 vs Detroit Tigers L 8-4 LP-Al Fitzmorris (0-1) HR-Bob Oliver(1) An early two run lead for the Royals wasn’t enough as the Tigers put together consecutive three run innings in the fifth and sixth to take the lead for good. KC’s starter, Bill Butler, had a strong outing as he only allowed one unearned run in his four innings. Adding injury to the loss, the Royals will be without reliever Don O’Riley for up to six weeks after he injured his knee. Player of the game was Detroit’s Dick Wert, who homered and knocked in two. Trade between Montreal and Houston Expos get: C Johnny Edwards LF Keith Lampard Astros get: LF Jose Herrera |

ST Game 3 @ Baltimore Orioles L 10-9 LP-Dave Wickersham (0-1) Kansas City batted around in the first inning on their way to an early four run lead. Too bad the game didn’t end there, since the O’s got crooked numbers in innings two, three and four that put the game out of reach, even with the Royals late attempt at a rally. The player of the game was KC’s Hawk Taylor who cranked out three hits in four at bats and knocked in three in a losing effort. INJURY NEWS San Diego will be without the services of pitcher Leon Everitt. Early reports indicate that he will miss up to a month with a strained elbow. 03.05.1969 ST Game 4 @ California Angels W 7-3 WP-Al Fitzmorris (1-1) Early on it looked like the Royals were headed for their fourth straight defeat, until a five run seventh put KC in front to stay. The key hit came from pinch-hitter Jerry Adair who knocked in the final two runs of the inning. The player of the game was California’s Jim Spencer who went two for three with a solo homer. INJURY NEWS Montreal reliever Howie Reed was taken out of the game against Los Angeles after elbow tenderness. “It was kinda freaky. Hopefully, I’ll be back in the lineup soon.” Montreal’s doctor indicates that it will be a couple of weeks before Reed will pitch again. 03.06.1969 ST Game 5 vs Minnesota Twins W 4-3 WP-Dave Wickersham (1-1) SV-Moe Drabowsky(1) HR-Tom Tresh(1) A pair of two run innings propelled the Royals to their second straight spring victory. Player of the game was KC’s Tom Tresh, who went two for four with the game winning homer in the seventh inning. INJURY NEWS San Diego pitcher Jack Baldschun will miss the rest of the season after suffering a herniated disc. CONTRACT NEWS Pittsburgh and outfielder Willie Stargell have come to an agreement on a 5 year deal worth over $6 million. |

ST Game 6 @ New York Yankees L 4-1 LP-Mike Hedlund (0-2) One run usually won’t win the game, particularly against a team like the Bronx Bombers, and it didn’t in this game. New York’s Fritz Peterson was named the player of the game after holding KC to one run on three hits through four innings. INJURY NEWS San Francisco will need another centerfielder as Bobby Bonds went down with a ruptured disc. Initial reports indicated that Bonds will miss at least eight months. The injuries on the San Diego pitching staff continue to mount. This time, Dave Roberts will be out of action for up to three weeks after straining a back muscle. “At least it’s not serious,” said Roberts. “I’ll be back fairly soon and able to help the team.” 03.08.1969 Trade between San Francisco and Cleveland Giants get: LF Frank Baker Indians get: 2B Ron Hunt ST Game 7 vs Boston Red Sox L 10-3 LP-Bill Butler (0-1) The Red Sox jumped all over KC starter Bill Butler with three runs in the first inning and it was all downhill for the Royals after that. Boston’s Rico Petrocelli was named the player of the game after going one for two with a homer and three rbi. 03.09.1969 ST Game 8 @ Oakland Athletics W 17-3 WP-Dick Drago (1-0) HR-Bob Oliver (2), Hawk Taylor (1) The Royals jumped out to a four run lead in the first inning and kept on the gas, piling up twenty-one hits in the process. Tom Tresh, the new shortstop for KC, had four hits in six at bats with two rbi’s. He wasn’t the player of the game though. That honor went to Hawk Taylor with his two for four day with a homer and four rbi. |

ST Game 9 @ Washington Senators L 11-10 LP-Tommie Sisk (0-1) HR-Ellie Rodriguez (1) The game started well as the Royals scored two in the first, but when the Senators answered with four in the bottom half and another four runs in the second, it was just too much for Kansas City to overcome. The Royals hitting star of the game was Ellie Rodriguez going two for three with a homer and three rbi’s. The player of the game was Washington second baseman Bernie Allen as he went three for three with two homers and seven rbi’s. One homer was a grand slam in the second inning. 03.11.1969 CONTRACT NEWS The Tigers and catcher Bill Freehan have reached an agreement on a four year extension that will keep the veteran catcher in Motown. No financial terms were disclosed. ST Game 10 vs Chicago White Sox L 6-2 LP-Jim Rooker (0-1) HR-Juan Rios (1), Jim Rooker (1) Royals starter Jim Rooker limited the White Sox to four hits and hit his first homer of the spring, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Chicago. Player of the game honors went to Chicago’s first baseman, Pete Ward, who went three for four with an rbi. 03.12.1969 ST Game 11 @ Seattle Pilots W 13-1 WP-Mike Hedlund (1-2) HR-Juan Rios (2) The Royals exploded for thirteen runs against their expansion brethren. The game was close until a six run fifth inning punctuated by a two run double by Scott Northey. Player of the game honors went to shortstop Juan Rios after his two for five performance with a homer and three rbi’s. INJURY NEWS Chicago White Sox reliever Bart Johnson will be out for 8 months after suffering a herniated disc in today’s game. Does the San Diego pitching staff have a curse on it? Two more members will be missing time after getting injured today. Frank Reberger will miss about two months after hurting his back. Billy McCool will be out for seven weeks after damaging his knee. |

Trade between San Francisco and Seattle Giants get: CF Wayne Comer LF Danny Walton Pilots get: SS Cesar Gutierrez ST Game 12 vs Cleveland Indians W 5-2 WP-Bill Butler (1-1) HR-Bill Butler (1), Mike Fiore (2), Jackie Hernandez (1) Mike Fiore’s solo homerun in the first put the Royals ahead and they never relinquished it, adding two runs each in the fifth and seventh innings. Fiore was also named the player of the game after his perfect three for three day. INJURY NEWS It’s official. The strength and conditioning trainer for San Diego needs to go. Yet another Padre pitcher is going to the dl with arm woes, this time it’s Mike Corkins and he’ll miss up to a month with a strained elbow. 03.14.1969 – Off Day Trade between Kansas City and Minnesota Royals get: P Bob Miller Twins get: 1B Bob Oliver Not a good trade for the Royals, practically giving away Oliver to a division rival for an average at best starter. Ought to be interesting to watch how Miller and Oliver develop. I think this trade will come back to haunt the Royals. Trade between Montreal and Detroit Expos get: P Pat Dobson Tigers get: 3B Coco Laboy Great trade for the Expos, but what in the world were the Tigers thinking in trading the talented Dobson for a journeyman third baseman? 03.15.1969 ST Game 13 @ Detroit Tigers W 8-4 WP-Al Fitzmorris (2-1) HR-Joe Keough (1), Hawk Taylor (2) KC was leading 3-2 going into the top of the ninth inning and salted the game away with five runs, highlighted by a two-run single from Juan Rios. Hawk Taylor was named the player of the game after going two for four with a solo homer. INJURY NEWS Montreal pitcher Steve Renko was placed on the dl today. He will be expected to miss up to seven weeks after straining his right bicep. |

ST Game 14 vs Baltimore Orioles W 4-1 WP-Roger Nelson (1-0) SV-Moe Drabowsky (2) HR-Lou Piniella (1) The Royals jumped in front of the Orioles early, highlighted by player of the game Lou Piniella’s three run homer. Outstanding pitching from Roger Nelson, Tom Burgmeier, Galen Cisco and Moe Drabowsky limited Baltimore to one run on five total hits. 03.17.1969 ST Game 15 vs California Angels W 12-2 WP-Mike Hedlund (2-1) HR-Jackie Hernandez (2), Ed Kirkpatrick (1), Ellie Rodriguez (2) When you score crooked numbers in five different innings, you should win the game and that’s what the Royals did today. Led by Lou Piniella’s perfect three for three and Paul Schaal’s two for three, Kansas City just rolled over their Western division rival. Player of the game honors went to Ed Kirkpatrick with his two for two, homer and three rbi’s. 03.18.1969 ST Game 16 @ Minnesota Twins L 7-6 (10 inn) LP-Moe Drabowsky (0-1) HR-Tom Tresh (2) Usually when a team gets five runs in the first inning, like the Royals did, you’d think they would win the game. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case for Kansas City as they would up losing in extra innings. Tom Tresh was named player of the game for his three run homer in the first inning. |

ST Game 17 vs New York Yankees W 5-1 WP-Bill Butler (2-1) A pair of two run innings carried the Royals to a victory over the Bronx Bombers. Royals starter and winner, Bill Butler, held the Yankee bats to one lone hit over his four innings and he was named the player of the game. 03.20.1969 ST Game 18 @ Boston Red Sox L 3-2 (10 inn) LP-Moe Drabowsky (0-2) A pitcher’s duel was decided by a Tony Conigliaro sacrifice fly in the tenth inning. Dick Drago, the Royals starter, was solid but did give up a game-tying two run homer in the fourth to Rico Petrocelli, who was named as the player of the game. 03.21.1969 ST Game 19 vs Oakland Athletics L 2-0 LP-Roger Nelson (1-1)The pitching continues to be solid for the expansion Royals throughout the spring. Unfortunately, the offense has been really inconsistent. |

Trade between Minnesota and Oakland Twins get: P Marcel Lachemann Athletics get: CF Ted Uhlaender ST Game 20 vs Washington Senators L 11-2 LP-Mike Hedlund (2-3) The Senators scored five runs in the first inning and were never in any danger of losing ths early lead. Another five run outburst in the eighth by Washington merely salted this one away. 03.23.1969 ST Game 21 @ Chicago White Sox L 13-11 LP-Dave Wickersham (1-2) HR-Lou Pinella (2) A six run third inning for the Sox was nearly matched by a five run sixth for the Royals, but Chicago also put up three in the sixth and four in the eighth to cement the win. All around, it was a bad game for the KC pitching staff. INJURY NEWS Cincinnati will be placing pitcher Gary Nolan on the disabled list with a ruptured tricep. Early reports have him missing the entire season. CONTRACT NEWS Baltimore and outfielder Frank Robinson have agreed to a three year extension. Robinson has a lifetime .302 average with 418 homeruns and 1377 runs batted in. 03.24.1969 ST Game 22 vs Seattle Pilots W 6-4 WP-Bill Butler (3-1) SV-Moe Drabowsky (3) Three runs in the third, one in the fourth, and two in the fifth propelled the Royals to their first win in five games. Centerfielder Ed Kirkpatrick was the KC hitting star getting a pair of hits as well as two rbi’s. |

ST Game 23 @ Cleveland Indians L 6-3 LP-Dick Drago (1-1) A four run first inning for the Indians was enough to propel Cleveland to a victory. The hitting star for the Royals was Paul Schaal, who went 2 for 3 and raised his average to .233. 03.26.1969 ST Game 24 vs Detroit Tigers L 3-0 LP-Tommie Sisk (0-2) A pitcher’s duel was decided in the eighth inning as the Tigers put up a 3 spot to get the victory. KC’s lone offensive bright spot was Ed Kirkpatrick who went 2 for 4. INJURY NEWS Philadelphia pitcher Barry Lersch will be out for 12 months after rupturing the tricep in his pitching arm. 03.27.1969 Trade between Pittsburgh and Boston Pirates get: 1B George Scott Red Sox get: SS Jose Pagan Good trade for the Pirates as they get younger with the addition of Scott. SP: MIN – T. Hall KC – M. Hedlund Game #002 vs Minnesota L 3-0 WP – T. Hall (1-0) LP – M. Hedlund (0-1) SV – J. Grzenda (1) HR – MIN: H. Killebrew (2) Mike Hedlund gave another solid starting performance for the Royals going seven strong innings allowing only two runs, but it was wasted as the Kansas City offense was shut down by Minnesota’s Tom Hall. Harmon Killebrew smashed his second homer in as many days and that was all the offense needed for the Twins to improve to 2-0 on the young season. POG – Minnesota’s Tom Hall – 7 IP, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 92 pitches “Right now we’re scuffling a bit,” said Kansas City manager Carlos Ramirez. “Give credit to the Minnesota pitchers, but we’ve been inconsistent throughout the spring and it’s gotten even worse since the season has started. At least our pitchers are keeping us in games, but we can’t continue with our offense playing this poorly.” “It’s early,” said Royals outfielder Lou Piniella, who went 2 for 4 today. “Sometimes it takes a while for the bats to heat up. We’ll be fine.” Other American League Results Athletics 2 vs White Sox 1 (10 inn) WP – E. Sprague (1-0) LP – T. John (0-1) Yankees 10 @ Senators 2 WP – A. Downing (1-0) LP – J. Coleman (0-1) SV – S. Yeah, it's early in the season. No need to panic yet. The first month or so, it's just about feeling the team out and seeing what you have. Especially in a situation like this.
