This can't be a coincidence, can it?
In my historical replay I have seen, time and again, older players hanging on through severely diminished ratings seemingly in order to achieve a particular milestone, ie; 3,000 hits, 300 wins etc. Once the achievement has been reached, they retire that post season. It's happened so many times that I find it hard to believe its just a happy coincidence.
btw, I ain't complaining. I think its great. |

Someone in Beta brought this up. Whether Markus actually coded it, I don't know. I didn't see a TT on it, so my guess is that it is a coincidence.

Considering how many times I've seen it, I would be shocked if it were just a coincidence. My money says it was coded in. |

Rightfully so. See Bonds, Barry; Rose, Pete.

Bonds isn't exactly "hanging on through severely diminished ratings".

I hope it is programed that the players try and hang on to get to that magic number - provided that the AI uses the player correctly and does not allow a 40 something to start all 162 games with ratings of 2's when they have a 20 something with 9's riding the pine.

This was a feature requested for 2007, so it would be a remarkable coincidence if it wasn't coded in.

I used to hate when guys with decent enough ratings would retire with 495 hr or something.
Oh and by the way how many hits is Julio Franco away from 3000? Now there's a guy who seems to be hanging on for some reason, gotta be trying to get 3000 hits...lol |

For those people experiencing it do you have numbers in your HOF Requirements?
Just curious if perhaps this has to do with those numbers and the AI being aware of a player closing in on it. |

You know, that's not a bad thought...but I'm pretty sure I've seen it happen with numbers above the HOF requirements. Like Cobb with 4,000 hits, etc.

Before we go too far into this, are you sure it's not just selective observation -- you notice these guys more, because they're stars?

He's trying to play to the age of fifty. He doesn't much care how many hits he has, as long as he gets enough each year that he can find a place to play the next year. He holds the records for oldest guy to hit a homer and steal a base, and he'd like to put them permanently out of reach.

I think it's way simpler than that. I think he's just trying to get paid to play baseball for as long as he can. From what I gather, if he still had the ability to play major league baseball, Rickey Henderson would still be wearing a uniform as well.

That's true about Rickey (and I think he could've played another year or two).
As for Julio Franco, I was going by an interview he did when he signed a two year contract with the Mets prior to 2006. In it he said he was asking for a three year deal because his goal was to play to age fifty, but the Mets were the only team that offered more than a single year, which is why he signed with them even though they made it clear he wouldn't start (which he had done the year before with the Braves). By the way, is it true that El Duque is 92? {insert 'innocent eyes' smilie here} |

Nope, he's hanging on through severely enhanced 'roids technology.

Bonds-anoia
You're right. I'm still surprised that MLB is allowing Bonds to continue playing considering how many times he's failed the drug testing. Its too bad, b/c there's no way he'd have an OPS >1.000 if he wasn't juicing...
