Lets Have a FM Style Assistant Manager in OOTP2007

A guy who can perform tasks that we might not want to do and who can give us a quick talent round-up of our squad. The Assistant Manager is a great FM feature and lets the user do as much or little as he/she wants.

Any thoughts?

Shoulda noticed it wasn't in OT.

I like the idea though.

Ahh.. the shortening of Assistant Manager to the first three letters of each word. Fallshalkjdaflkj did that in his FM thread in OT. Reminds me of Cosmo Kramer's vanity plates.

For the record, I think it's a good idea.

I was just regretting not getting on early enough to see what ctorg was talking about when I came to PotatoPeeler's post which reveals all. Thanks, PotatoPeeler - I would have been wondering all day about this.

Yeah, it's kind of a drag not being able to edit your thread titles and having to rely on the kindness of moderators to do so for you.

Anyway, I also think that this is a cool idea. The obvious jobs for an assistant manager would be lineups and pitching staff, of course (although you have that built in the game already in one form or another) but I would also use my assistant to assign scouting tasks, handle minor league and lower level player re-signings, releasing the busted players who have drifted down to rookie level, etc. All according to an option grid with settings as to scouting routines, salary/skill levels, age/ratings maximums and minimums to avoid release, etc.

And I would prefer it not to be somebody I have to hire and extend, worry about his preferences and competence, and who would disappear periodically without saying goodbye. Someone outside the coaching module, in other words, that I sometimes am tempted to turn off.

Nice idea, bababui.

I like the idea, but I don't think he should be called an Assistant Manager, because I have never heard of such a position in baseball.

Maybe call him the Assistant GM, since it seems that is what he will most likely be acting like. Hire a Assistant GM to carry out some of the more tedious aspects of roster management.

Anything from making your lineups/defensive allignment to resigning your players to reminding the manager a pitcher is tiring. Also, perhaps he could make in-game strategy suggestions if the human layer wanted..a good thing for new managers. His duties could be set in the preferences page by checking the boxes of what you wanted him to do.

That sounds good, but I would add the scouting and roster management that I mentioned. I hear LeiterFanatic about another layer of AI management, but I'm talking about the truly routine stuff that could be assigned and controlled though optional settings of applicable routines and limits. Everything should be made available menu-style; just pick and choose what you want the assistant GM to do, from nothing to everything offered, and what parameters to use.

I believe they are called Traveling Secreteries and from what I have seen on Sienfield, they are fat, bald and really do not do much.

Good idea.

Frankly, anything that the AI manager does should be allowed to be delegated to the Asst. Mgr. Just present a check box window with all managerial duties. If checked, the AM does it for you. That way you can focus on learning certain aspect of the job, thus facilitating scaling of the steep learning curve for this game. Once you master something, then take another responsibility from the AM. Love this idea.

I'd especially like to delegate scouting assignments. I'd also be careful in not calling the person who does all this stuff the Asst. GM b/c I really don't think that person would ever set lineups and stuff. Maybe call it "Asst. GM and Bench Coach Duties".

Yes, you can automate much of what we are talking about already, and some of the other scouting and roster management duties could be just menu items as well. But I like bababui's suggestion of personalizing it with an identity.

For me, I would like to see a female assistant in this role, with an array of interesting avatars to choose from.

I know you can automate things already, and that should still be an option in the game, but for those who desire more realism, you should have the option of hiring someone with attributes, so you can hire some guy to be the Asst GM and he may not know his right from his left and run your organization into the ground.

The AM in FM is almost useless

He suggests horrible lineups and will continuly tell you that your team needs to improve even when it is the last fixture of the season and your team is in 1st place by 20 points and your GD is +30

So no, I think its a bad idea and would hate to see Markus waste his time putting a feature that will actualy hurt new players more than help them.

I wouldn't call it useless. If you hire a bad one it can do some damage following his advice. It is nice to get some different input on potential signings, a players ability, and how much to offer in contract offers.

Again, I say that if this is implemented that it be called Assistant GM since these are more the jobs he would assist in, and that ratings be attributed so that some decision making is required when hiring one.

Plus it could be a nice fall guy. Tell your boss "Hey don't fire me! Fire the dumb assistant!"
