Plague !!! 1932 Presidential Election: Vote Now!

Please vote for who should be the next President of the United States. I have listed their platforms and photos for your perusal. I have also linked their names to their Wikipedia page (or another page with vital info on their actual life).

THE CANDIDATES

DEMOCRAT:
PRESIDENT: J. HAMILTON LEWIS - U.S. Senator from Illinois - 1904-Present
VICE PRESIDENT: ROSS STERLING - Governor of Texas - 1929-present

SLOGAN - "STABILITY IN A TIME OF CHAOS; STRATEGY FOR THE FUTURE"

CAMPAIGN PLATFORM
  • Ages: Lewis - 69, Sterling - 57
  • Lewis has served nearly 5 terms as Senator from Illinois.
  • Many Washington insiders had assumed that he would retire at the completion of his current term, but he shocked everyone when he declared his candidacy, stating it was "his God-given duty to do what he could to right this ship before it crashes into the iceberg looming on the horizon".
  • He is known to be quite eccentric and a talented orator, given to quoting verses of poetry to illustrate his political points.
  • Has embraced the idea of a federal Department of Education, first proposed by former Republican presidential candidate Herbert Hoover, in order to "sow the minds of the youth of this grand land with the seeds of progress. Too long has this resource lain fallow!"
  • Is well-liked by members of both parties, though many harbor concerns for his health.
  • Governor Sterling grew up on a farm and, after little formal education, began working as a clerk at the age of twelve.
  • At the age of 21 he started his own merchandising business, and in 1911 he organized the Humble Oil Company
  • In addition to oil, Sterling has also been involved in a railroad, a newspaper, banking, and real estate in the Houston area, and was an active member of the Houston Port Commission.
  • Has been a driving force behind oil development in Texas, which has led to the state being somewhat insulated from the national economic crisis.
  • Sterling has proposed greatly increased exploration for oil in the Gulf of Mexico and the vast tracts of the U.S. territory of Alaska.
  • Is a proponent of "the responsibility of the government to protect the public from itself".

REPUBLICAN:
PRESIDENT: ALF LANDON - U.S. Senator from Arkansas - 1927-Present
VICE PRESIDENT: CHARLES CURTIS - U.S. Senator from Kansas - 1913-Present, Congressman 1893-94, 1900-1907

SLOGAN - "AT LONG LAST, A RETURN TO OUR PROPER PLACE IN THE WORLD"

CAMPAIGN PLATFORM
  • Age: Landon - 44, Curtis - 72
  • Alf is considered a "liberal" Republican
  • Has gained a reputation for reducing taxes and balancing the budget.
  • Has publicly stated that former US Supreme Court Chief Justice Teddy Roosevelt is one of his role models and should be considered "the greatest statesman of the past 50 years".
  • He is described as a fiscal conservative who nevertheless believes that government must also address social issues
  • Known to oppose labor unions.
  • Landon has been criticized as "a bit of a milquetoast", easily intimidated when confronted aggressively. His softspoken manner has been alternately characterized as "silent strength" and "a sign of spinelessness"
  • Curtis is of American Indian ancestry
  • Has been a strident supporter for all legislation relating to equal rights, even suggesting the addition of an Equal Rights Amendment.
  • Served on the Morton Council from 1894-1899, the administrative body charged by President Levi Morton to enforce martial law during the height of the plague years at the end of the 19th century.

INDEPENDENT:
PRESIDENT: ALFRED EMANUEL "AL" SMITH - Governor of New York 1919-20, 1922-28, Vice President 1929, President June 1929-Present
VICE PRESIDENT: WILLIAM WARREN BARBOUR - Senator from New Jersey, 1931-Present

SLOGAN - "AMERICA IS OUR FIRST CONCERN"

CAMPAIGN PLATFORM
  • Age: Smith - 58, Barbour - 42
  • The president was surprisingly dropped from the Democratic ticket in his reelection bid, but has vowed to run as an independent, despite cries that he will be handing the presidency to the Republicans "on a platter".
  • Smith succeeded his extremely popular predecessor, Patrick J. Kennedy upon his untimely death in office after being elected to an unprecedented 3rd term.
  • Was a highly controversial choice to replace "Cactus Jack" Garner on the Democratic ticket in 1928. Like Kennedy, Smith identifies with Irish-Catholic immigrants and supports nearly every policy that Kennedy had espoused.
  • His plummeting popularity has resulted from the stock market crash months into his first term and his subsequent stand that the 1926 National Economic Security Act needs to be drastically modified to avoid driving the government into deeper debt.
  • Has been called "a paranoid alarmist" by members of both parties in recent months, referring to his comments on the dangers of the Magyar Dominion.
  • During his tenure as Governor of New York, he strengthened laws governing workers' compensation, women's pensions, and child and women's labor.
  • During his first term, he has continued to advance the cause of civil liberty by decrying lynching and racial violence.
  • Senator Franklin D. Roosevelt nicknamed him "the Happy Warrior of the political battlefield," but the public has begun to view his cheer as artificial and calculated.
  • He still retains his strong popularity in the Northeast United States, but the rest of the country has turned against him.
  • He has characterized this election as "a chance for the country to escape the stranglehold of the two-party system
  • Barbour is widely considered to be Smith's 3rd or 4th choice to be his running mate.
  • He has only been a member of the Senate for 10 months, having been appointed tothe U.S. Senate by New Jersey Governor Morgan F. Larson soon after the death of his predecessor Dwight Morrow.
  • Barbour was the amateur heavyweight boxing champion of the U.S. and Canada in 1910 and 1911. Rumor has it that both Theodore Roosevelt and "Gentleman Jim" Corbett wanted him to take up the mantle of "the great white hope" and fight Jack Johnson, the reigning professional heavyweight champion in 1913.
  • Despite his relative inexperience, Barbour was vaulted into the public eye this spring with his vocal condemnation of the policies of the Magyar Dominion in the European conflict. He has continued to speak on this topic, urging the United States and their allies to interject themselves diplomatically, if not militarily.
  • Barbour continues to affiliate himself with the Republican Party, though that may change if Smith continues the charge to create a 3rd major political party.

This really reminds me of stuff I was doing a decade ago.

Allan Lichtman wrote that one telling item for an incumbent defeat is a serious third party challenge in the election. It's crazy to see the sitting president as the third party challenger, but who knows? Thus spake publius.

First of all, how can you possibly vote against a nice guy like Curtis?

Second, Landon and Smith have the best platforms.

Third, independents can't be elected President. The last time that happened was George Washington (okay, maybe not in plague world).

Fourth, you can't hold Landon's position on the Morton Council against him; the was only six years old, for gossakes! Not only did he not understand the consequences of his actions (which he has since come to greatly and sincerely regret), but the guy was obviously a political prodigy.

In conclusion: Vote Curtis. Liberal Republicans give you the best of both worlds.

This has been a public service announcement. No chickens were killed in the production of this broadcast. Thank you for your time. See you at the polls. Vote early and vote often.

This may be the most decisive election outcome ever. Bigger than FDR in 1936 and Nixon in 1972.

It's official. The Republicans take back power after 12 years of Democratic rule.
