Some questions for those in the "KNOW"

I have posted this over at the BBSC (it will always be baseball sim central in my mind ) boards which I tend to visit a little more - but I am hoping that I might impose upon this board to get some insight on enjoying the game. Thank You

Here was my post:

Well I finally have the game and I am feeling a little lost trying to work my way around the different screens. I do have a few questions for those that have been playing the game for a little while now:

1. I see that when I start a game, I have a managers record of 0-0. Will this change as I go through the season? Is this only if I play out the games, or will it change if I just sim. I have noticed some confusion with the whole "am I running the team or not" with regards to Commish mode, etc.. I am not in Commish mode - I believe I am running just one team.

2. I d/l a historical quickstart that begins in 1901. I also d/l arod's database to use for the "future" seasons. My question is what files need to be in the database. It seems like there are multiples of the same name or type - batting, orig batting, regular batting, etc... Will this be a problem down the road or will the game know which files to use? Should I delete some of these or leave them all in the for the game to figure out?

3. With starting a new game - should I reset all players service time to 0? Does this matter in an historical .lg starting from 1901?

4. is there anything else that I need to be mindful of in trying to play historical baseball and trying to import "real" players?

Thanks for taking a look

I don't know anything about historical replays ... I am a fictional leaguer myself. However, I'll try to answer your Q1.

The W-L record on the manager history page changes to reflect the record of your team while you are the GM or manager of the team. You do not have to play out games for the record to update. So, while you may be simulating the games, you are tagged with the wins and losses your team accumulates while you are in control of the roster.

There is a lot of hokey stuff that goes on while you are in Commissioner mode. I try to avoid simming in that mode. In fact, it really isn't necessary to remain in Commish mode for long periods of time. In commish mode, you can take over a team and "act as" the GM so you can force trades, edit cash budgets, edit stadia, etc. However, if you want your lineup/rotations/minors decisions to be effective, you have to be hired by the team. Otherwise, the AI will undo all your changes the minute you stop acting as the GM of a team.

I hope it helps. Enjoy your historical replays!

Thank you for the insight - that helped with the concerns I had #1.

As for #3, you can if you want but I think the only difference it makes is if you have minor league options turned on (players with more than 3 years experience can refuse to be sent down). I don't think a 38 year old with 0 years will perform any differently than a 38 year old with 17 years in the majors.

He just won't be eligible for FA at the end of his contract that way. Though, in a historical sim started in 1901 I suppose that free agency is going to be turned off anyway.
