See You Wouldnt Want To Be You!

I am so happy that the game has been out for 6 weeks now. That means all these newbies who buy the game and spend the next few weeks crying and moanin will slowly disappear. Why are these people allowed to go on for weeks bad talking the game and hanging around bashing anyone who happens to like the game. If you don't like the game move on we wont miss you I promise. As strange as it sounds, the people who don't like a game are the people you want to hear from. If I wanted to expand my appeal and market share, I would want to know what my non-customers thought. Granted, there are better ways to approach the problems than some of us have taken.

That's my zen point for the day. Now, back to the regularly scheduled fanboy v. basher programming.

If the only people posting were those who loved the game from the start, I don't think there would've been as much progress. SI would have had little motivation to press a patch or two out asap. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Of course, just as the loud whine-o's are necessary, the bitter fanboys also play a vital role in bashing the whine-o's, so that there is a balance to the force.

I agree 100 per cent when what they have to say is constructive, but most of the time they just carry on with rude comments and ranting until they lock the post or they are banned. Do we really need this behaviour?

It's all or nothing. But in the spectrum of things, you know the game is in good shape or headed there soon when the complaints seem less legit and more along the lines of pointless complaining. Like I said, it's the job of the cranky fanboys to put those guys in their place. But if we were to cut them off before they got to that point, some good issues might be missed.

Everyone has their role. I prefer mine to be that of the random poster who comes in, puts in his 2 cents that doesn't really add anything to a conversation, and disappears before he can read any nasty responses to his post. Others may have more important roles.

Most of the people who are upset or who dislike aspects of the game have been valuable in making suggestions to help it develop further. Some of those suggestions have been in patches or are slated to be in the upcoming one. It's only been a small few who have resorted to flames, trolling, and excessive whining. Still, most people want the game to succeed and want to improve the new version and so offer constructive comments that the game designer can react to as opposed to just saying "this game is crap" and then loudly stating how that's all that need be said.

Appreciate and listen to those who offer contructive criticism and suggestions; ignore those who are simply on a flame-thrower binge!

So you believe the only ones complaining are newbies?

Complaining is great, and to be honest I like hearing new perspectives from the so-called "newbies". The people who really get my dander up are the folks who have been here for years, who really should understand by now that "a simple fix" often isn't so simple and that presenting ultimatums generally just gets you ignored.

On top of that, there are *all* the freaking complaints about the UI. I don't think I've seen a single true "newbie" complain about it because, well, it's not that bad. All the complaints I've seen are from longtime users who grew accustomed to the old UI and who are whining because they don't want to relearn how to play a game they felt like they already put hours of learning into. That's fine and dandy, but at some point you've got to just say to yourself, "you know what? This is a brand new game. The old interface isn't coming back. I may as well either get used to it or move on."

So yeah... the newbies ain't the problem IMO.

I agree. The newbies (and by that I mean new to the series, not just the boards) tend to deal better with the UI than some of the oldtimers. Probably because they don't have to "unlearn what they have learned."

Old dogs won't learn new tricks and all that.

Many of them have. I've been playing since STBB2003 which makes me a middle aged dog I suppose but I picked it up fast and haven't looked back. It doesn't surprise me though that some of the older players wouldn't be so happy.

i have been here from the first edition and it has always been my favorite game. i don't particularly like the direction of the new edition but my god where would the game be if anyone who didn't like it simply asked for a refund and said goodbye. the person who started this post might not miss the complainers but i think markus would.

i think the initial response from a very sizeable group was what a disappointment this game was. the company listened to the complaints and i think is making good progress toward clearing up a lot of the issues. but the fact is there was and still are a great many issues to be cleared up and in fact the company asks for problems to be reported.

i would agree that posts that simply state that the gamer is fed up and is going to another game don't have to be posted but item (constructive) complaints are the lifeblood of this and any other product.

Yeah, I have to agree. Although I have no problem with the new game and have played OOTP from version 3, I see alot of the gripes coming from people who have played the game just a long, or longer and don't like the new interface.

Haven't seen MD around these parts lately, but I would actually be interested in his take on the new game. But, then again maybe his silence speaks 1,000 words

He showed up a week ago, declared he didn't like the new version and was sticking with 6.51 (he didn't elaborate so far as I've seen) and I haven't seen him since.

Actually he did say he moved and wouldn't be around for awhile as the area he moved to wasn't connected. As for his thoughts on the new version I'm not sure. But if he isn't able to download how can he have any thoughts on weather he liked it or not.

Too often people accept silence is equivalent to customer satisfaction. More often than not it means the customer is profoundly disappointed and he/she doesn't think what they say matters. Nothing worse than asking how your product is and all they say is "It's fine."

Clearly, and fortunately, that is not a problem for the OOTP customers. We will tell the developers what sucks and what rocks. In fact, in a little informal survey with a google search, I have found that searching for:

"OOTP Sucks" returns 72 results.
"OOTP Rocks" returns 357 results.

Like Zitofan said. He showed up one day, made a few posts, said he didn't like 2006. No explanations. Just didn't like it.

He posted that his move to his new house has been a bit bumpy, that he has no reliable internet connection, that he was playing 6.51 as he had no interest in the new version, and his sig exhorts to get OOTP2006 fixed.

Perhaps his absense is has a very prosaic explantion.
