Which one to buy? 6.5 or 2006?

Hello all,

I am new to this community, but, being a baseball fan (from europe!), I'd like to buy this game.

But I hesitate. Cause people say OOTB 6.51 is better than OOTB 2006.
But the 2006 version has been patched recently. So how does it compare now?
I saw that rosters are missing also in the 2006 version.

I dont know which one to buy. Could you help me and tell me which one would you chose if you had to start from scratch?
Which one is better? OOTB6.5 or OOTB2006?

Thank you.

More than likely once the second patch is completed 2006 will be better. Some people may have a difficult time adjusting to the changes from 6.5 to 2006, but in the long run 2006 will be the way to go.

Also 6.5 won't be supported forever and I would guess the 2006 engine will be in place for awhile.

For someone who hasn't played OOTP6, I would definitely recommend 2006. It will soon be the much better game (if it's not already after the patch), and many of the problems people have are a product of having to re-learn the game from the old versions. Not to mention that 2006 is going to keep having current mods and support, while these things for v6 won't last forever.

Gather 'round everybody. What we have here is a rare specimen of Baseballus europus.

I only jest.
Welcome aboard and allow me to offer my condolences ahead of time for all of the free time you just lost to OOTP.

Yes I have never owned any version of OOTB.
So I suppose I'll buy the 2006 version.

Hope it will be as deep and exciting as football manager.
I love baseball, so it should do the trick!

And, to be sure, there arent any MLB (or other leagues) rosters available yet? or am I mistaken?

And americans are said to be less "complicated"....

(same with american football. Try to explain to a european the football rules, it will take weeks)

I'm an Engkish baseball fan (since I was a lad at school and Santo was still playing for the Cubbies!!) and have played V6, 6.5 and just now 2006. I think 6.5 will be easier to learn but, as the others have said , V2006 is the future. I'm running a simple 16 team legue that's suggested in the game guide and, with constant reference to the game guide, have learned an awful lot very quickly yet still feel I'm just grubbing about on the surface.
Whichever you buy you'll get more than your moneys worth.

What's worse is baseball fans learning cricket. I tried to learn how to play cricket, once. I should've spent more than one afternoon playing it with some Indian and Australian students. I stilll don't understand that game. But I do recall having a great time trying to play it! Maybe it was the beer we were drinking while "learning."

Edited to stay on topic:
I would recommed the 2006 version. Patch 2 is already looking much better, and this is the way to go. You may not play the game at its full complexity, but it has much more potential and promise than 6.5 could deliver at this point.

I would recommend 6.51a at this point, and be sure to download the Catobase utility as well for keeping track of league history. 6.51a is fully compatible w/ Catobase (just remember to rename lalltrans.txt to ltrans.txt!), and it's cheap. Patch 2 is looking promising, but there are still cropping up some really fundamental issues with 2006, including the financial model (merchandise money, some FAs don't sign at all, etc.), AI player evaluation (does it include fielding? does it overvalue pitcher endurance?), player development (AI drops starting pitchers once they hit 30, small leagues are skewed young b/c of the required minimum draft rounds), 1B fielding, & so on. My guess is that it will take a while to get those resolved. Once they are, 2006 will be a better game, but it will probably be ~6 months from now.

The demo is available for OOTP2006 (and might still be for 6.51) so you can rely on the most important opinion, yours!

Still, 6.51 is probably more polished as it's the result of several years of evolution. 2006 is essentially a start over, re-do although IMO it's a really good game as well and it is where the future of the game is at.

Still, the only person who knows what you'll prefer is you so try the demos. And welcome! Feel free to ask questions ...

Try what you want but buy OOTP 2006. I came into these games as OOTP 5 was being replaced by V6 and I regret buying V5 as I did not play it long. Since you are new, you may not be put off by the different UI. I admit freely that OOTP 2006 frustrates me but life goes on.

ootp 2006 is what you want. Being a FM veteran you'll have a head start on the UI. Real roster release "seems" to be about ready, sometime this week.
Long thread but lots of info here..

I'm from the states and play FM and love it. Is ootp as deep? Not yet but there is a lot there. Keep in mind it's a all new version rewritten from scratch and will continue to add features while 6.5x is not going to be improved any longer. It doesn't have the news or player interaction depth of FM but the foundation is in place as SI improves the game from year to year, ala FM.

6.5 was a great game but the future is ootp 2006 and beyond with SI.

I would also recommend OOTP2006. Currently it is not as solid as 6.5 in terms of AI. But I think as they resolve the bigger issues the game will far surpass 6.5.

Fixed it as I feel it should be.

6.5 is more reliable. But once the Rolls Royce comes out of the shop, it is pretty sweet to drive.

2006 all the way.

6.5 = Ford Pinto (an actually pretty solid vehicle destroyed by a couple of really big issues people didn't notice until late in the product's life cycle)

2006 = K-Car (a good, solid engine that will be the basis for future models)

Although, I have been hanging on to 6.51 because of a few very minor issues, V2006 is really the way to go in the long run. The depth of the game is incredible. Once it has been rid of all the little bugs, the game will be unlike anything ever on the market. It will also be much easier to learn if you have never seen it before. I keep getting frustrated with not being able to find things sometime because I am so used to 6.51.

Whichever version you decide on, you will be impressed and satisfied. Both games offer hours of enjoyment for a great price.

Welcome to the great OOTPB Community, cardiac.

Go with V2006. It is the future of OOTPB.

It is already a very fine game and will be even better one of these days.

You are already familiar with FM, so you will not have any problem with the SI interface and the complexity of the game.

I still am using OOTP6.5 because it is a simpler game and I am used to the interface. In my opinion, it is also better with in-game graphics...less cluttered and easier to read the text.

I will play my 6.5 league, wait for a few more V2006 patches and experiment with V2006 and try to learn it. I think it was released before it was a fairly trouble-free product, is too complicated for me, suffers from too many features and bells and whistles and still lacks the basics elements needed to play out a realistic baseball game.

But it is great if you just want to GM and sim.

Well, I wouldn't call them "very minor issues" at all. But yes, eventually it will be the supreme baseball sim product.
