League Totals Effects & Implimentations
If one changes the league totals (# of HR's, # of hits, etc.) in the league
setup say to all 0's--how does this overall effect league results over a given season? I know that OOTP 2006 like version 6 uses aspects of DIPS theory and logic to determine results and outcomes. I always been a little bit confused about what the league totals actually effect and do even since I started playing (OOTP 2). Thank you. |

Well, the league totals are a statistical definition of approximately what results you should see for your entire league after a full season.
So, if the home runs league total is set to 5000, after simulating one season, you should expect to see about 5000 home runs in your league. Generally speaking, the only people who ever need to touch league totals are historical simmers. People who are trying to precisely replicate the results of a certain historical period, like say a 1948 season, need the ability to tweak these totals so that the overall statistic output matches what statistical output would have been in 1948. But apart from that, I have never seen much need to play with the league totals. I can't imagine anything productive would happen from setting the league totals to 0, because that's like saying "I want 0 home runs in my league." League totals are also a bit confusing, because in all versions up to the current one, they are inverse. That is, if you increase the home runs total, your league will actually see fewer home runs. The default league totals in the game are designed to produce statistical outputs roughly equivalent to the most recent Major League Baseball season results. Does this help? You might also want to do a search on the forum for threads that have the word "tweak" in the title. I wrote a blog recently on how these will work in the new version. Sorry, I don't have the link handy... Steve |

EDIT: I removed "In most cases even "about" wouldn't end up being true." because it's just that it really depends on your AB and if you don't use an AB that is close to what you'll see in your league then you won't see the other totals being close either. Quote:

I do the fictional/historical thing so it's really important for me to be able to change things around. It's also useful if you prefer a certain style of baseball. For example, I'm a big fan of the way you could play wildly different strategies in the 70s and 80s and have engineered things so that the game creates 1985-looking league totals. Conversely, if you like the dead ball era, this is the way to go.
You can figure out the league totals just using a spreadsheet or, if you prefer, there's a really good utility for this too. If you're using the DIPS engine, though, you really really are going to want to set things up to run things through replay for a few seasons because it's flat-out not going to come out right the first time. Also, since the game figures things out in reverse, some extreme set-ups (example: 1930) will blow up the game. |

sorry to revive an old thread, but I guess I still don't understand fully what is going on herewith league totals. I have read through both the game guide and customation guide and haven't got a sufficient answer so I thought I would come here.
OK, lets say I want to set up the Cuban League. If I just input the actual league totals that I have from last years into the league totals section, will I see the results close to that? Or since the default totals are the MLB totals, will I see different results due to the inverse nature of the league totals? One more question: Does the # of games played affect the totals? Thanks in advance! EDIT: Or, conversely, should I take the totals that I have for the Cuban league and divide them by the totals for the major leagues to get the modifier? Would I then leave the league totals the same but change the modifier? Sorry for all the questions. Last edited by southside_hitmen; 07-14-2006 at 06:27 PM. |

In the game guide it says, "The results in your league are indirectly related to the league totals." Why is this and how would I ever go about getting stats that looked like MLB 1991 for example? |

sovereignstar - when you start a league those historical league totals for any given season will automatically load, no need to add anything up. First season totals are always tricky to get perfect. Just check the box under strategies and equivalencies that says "auto adjust league totals modifiers each season for historical accuracy". You will never have to do anything after that, it's hands-free.

At any rate, I should be able to figure out the 90-ish ratios, compare them to the default ratios, then adjust the modifiers, right?
