Comments on "Word of Mouse"

Marc Duffy has announced that the competetition for the last two beta spots consists of "In short, you have to post to as many places as possible about OOTPB 2006...The one with the most posts wins"

http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...d.php?t=113605

Some people have raised issues with this. Discuss the contest - in a civil manner - here.

My comments: I am rather taken aback, as I think this amounts to rewarding very rude Internet behavior. Your mileage may vary.

I'm loathed to keep referening Wikipedia, but for me http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word_of_mouth has some interesting quotes and references.

Quite simply, I want the very people that love OOTP to spread it's name and value to other Baseball fans.

Evangelism, as it were.

I'm not really into the idea at all. I basically see it as encouraging spamming, and think that it could get certain people miffed at the OOTP sites.

I was actually quite suprised that they even want to do this... people get banned for spamming in OT & now OOTP Dev & SI want us to go to other message boards and do the same???? I won't be doing it, I'd love to be a tester but if our spamming abilities is the test to become one... count me out.

I dont like it at all but that is markting or at least what he thinks it is.

What makes me real angry the that he deleted my post, i dont think he has the right to do that only because it wont fit the ideal world he is living in. That the kind of manipulation i always feared of IS. As customer you can say what you want but if you are not with him you get deleted only when it comes to paying then is the December ok.

I agree on the spamming, thats the last thing I want but providing people dont abuse it (you posting stuff about the game, to baseball fans, in baseball forums in a non OT way) it should be fine.

"Spamming an internet forum in general, is when a user posts something which is off-topic or doesn’t have anything to do with the current subject. Also, a post that doesn’t contribute to the thread whatsoever is also considered spam in some cases. A third form of Forum Spamming is where a person repeatedly posts about a certain subject in a manner that is unwanted by (and possibly annoying to) the general population of the forum. Lastly there is also the case where a person posts messages solely for the purpose of increasing his or her ranking on the forum. In a broader sense, advertising on forums where it is not wanted is known as spamming and is generally seen as an annoyance. One of the most famous spammers is Tim Roarty, aka TJRoar - whose massive post count across so many forums at such a high rate of posting is credited with the recent slow down in overall internet performance, see internet forum."

You seem very aggressive on this issue.

Politely, I removed your post and gave reasons for doing so. I was not trying censor you, just asked that it be directed to a new post.

As moderator of this forum, I have this right and I am sorry you feel so angry about this

What you want is to press very possible dime out of OOTP and as cheap as possible.

thats why you want guys from here to do your work for free

Sorry you feel it's spamming. It's possible to go about this without ever spamming anyone.

I'm not party to the rules in this forum on spamming, but from my own forum at community.sigames.com in the OT forums (almost) anything goes.

Again, sorry you feel this way. What I want, to take OOTP to a wider audience which does involve selling more copies.

I've already committed to spending a reasonable sum in advertising on Baseball websites. I'm now asking the community to also help spread everything that is good and they love about the game to people who may have an interest (Baseball fans, with a computer and internet connection)

Marc by making this contest about quantity you are really asking for it to be abused. I also wonder what would be the reaction by mods & members of this message board if we were on the recieving end of such a contest.

PM or a polite post in the thread. Both achieve the same to me.

I was not rude, I simply asked for it to be taken to a new thread!

if you look in several of the forums on this very website, there are already people promoting other games in a non intrusive and spamming manner.

I was going to enter into this, and I had actually already posted a thread at a couple of forums (That I actually have some quality posts at). But after reading all of the concerns, I'll go ahead and back out right now. I also asked the mods at the forums that I posted at to remove my posts.

I realize that, but generally those people do it on their own & have no alternative motives. In this case you're asking people to post in as many places as possible within the next six days for a chance to become a beta tester. IMO, that's spam.

I don't like it. I think it's great to encourage people to spread the word about OOTP, but I don't think this is the way to go about it. All it needs is one reply by someone saying how this contest exists and then not only does it make the readers less inclined to check it out, but it might also get them mad at our whole community. Just think, how would you feel if BM or PS people came over here and did the same thing, spamming our forums about their game? I sure wouldn't like it. You might say that's a bad example because it's a competing product. Switch our forum with some general baseball fan forum, same deal.
