You should, if only to root for Philadelphia.

I'm okay with whoever wins. I'm not particularly for or against either team. But I get why people are against Houston and/or pro Philly.

I wonder when hating the Astros will become old. I guess Altuve will have to move on.

Phillies in the World Series I did not see that one coming. Astros in the World Series again, cheating scandal will not tar this one if they win.
So I'm going with Astros in six games. They have the trifecta going for them better bullpen, deeper lineup, and motivation =something to prove

I hope the Phillies can ride their high a few games longer. They've basically made it to the World Series purely on passion...

Sometime shortly after the playoffs started, and more as they continued to win, I found myself growing tired of hating the Astros, dropping the "*" from their name. They are that good, there is no denying; it's been five years; and many current Astros were not around then. Plus I admire Dusty Baker, especially for what he faced when he took the helm in Houston. Oh, I will still root against them because the memory will always be there. But I don't waste emotion and energy anymore in hating them. There's too much hate in general.

I'm actually thinking Astros in 4.
No team since the Wild Card was brought in has ever run the table. The last team to do it was the Reds in '76 and they only had to go 7-0, which the Astros have already done. I actually wondered this at the beginning of the PS this year, but didn't look it up until now.

A few points on the cheatin' Astros...
1. Once all players have moved on, I will still root hard against them because not only did the players go unpunished, but the organization as a whole was aggressively non-repentant. The 2017 title will always be extremely tarnished AFAIC, and other than a small dent in the owner's bank account, the organization from top to bottom was essentially unpunished (thanks to gutless Manfred). 2. A friend pointed out that, yes, he will be rooting against Houston because of the cheating. But he also asked, "how fair is it for a 3rd place team to be in the World Series?" Fair question. My response was "better that an 87-win team make a mockery of the current playoff format than the unpunished cheaters win." That pretty much sums up how I'm approaching this WS... 3. I can only speak for myself, but when I use the word "hate" in relation to sports, it is "fan hate" and not real hate. I don't lose sleep over my "fan hate" of the BlackStros! ![]() |

Strange how Houston is involved in so much --
Houston and St. Louis ..... Houston a NL expansion team with NY Mets moves to American League ....... Suddenly begins winning ....... Houston Cheats - Trash Cans ? phones ? ??????? The team history from 45's to Astros .

World Series
Let’s just say, my son is trying to buy WS tickets in Philly, and asked me what I thought about Game Five, Wednesday. And I said, “not sure there’s going to be a Game Five.” Not sure where I was going there, honestly. The euphoria in Philly is so intense, it is possible to see a Phils’ sweep.
Then reality sets in. In truth, the Phils were very fortunate to draw an overrated and vulnerable St. Louis team in the Wild Card, rather than Milwaukee and their starters. Lucky again to draw the vastly overhyped Braves and not the Mutts and their rotation in the Divisional Round. Truly blessed to dodge the Dodgers in the NLCS. We were all hoping to play the Yankees in the WS (particularly if they had to win four straight to get in, exhausted…), to avenge 2009 and 1950. That would have been a good competitive grudge match, with former Yank Thomson at the helm in Philly. Houston has an intimidating lineup and strong pitching; but I would not want to play the Phillies right now. If they can win at least one game in Houston, with Nola and Wheeler, all bets are off in CBP for the tub-bangers. That’s the game plan. Did anyone just say team of destiny?

This will be the first World Series since 1950 with no black players

That very much depends on one's definition of "black".

Plaschke nails it. 99%, anyway. As an LA writer, I get how he paints only the Dodgers as the victims of the BlackStros' cheating. I mean, that much was clear, right before our retrospective yes. But even as a Dodger fan, I can absolutely acknowledge that it's not as simple as "the Dodgers would've won if not for Houston's cheating." Rather, at a minimum, the cheating deprived both the Yankees and Dodgers a chance at a World Series title. We could take it further to wonder how much the cheating affected the 2017 AL standings. Perhaps, if they weren't cheating, they win 8 or 10 fewer games and they don't have home field advantage against - or don't even advance to face - either the Red Sox or Yankees. We'll never know... At any rate, Plaschke nails it best here... "In the wake of a disgustingly miniscule penalty from Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred, the Astros organization was essentially unpunished and clearly unapologetic." ... and here: "The franchise kept the trophy. The players kept their rings. Their playoff shares have long been banked. The Astros were fined $5 million and draft picks and they shrugged and kept winning. They beat the system. They beat the rap..." The 2017 cheating scandal is as much a stain on Manfred as it is the BlackStros. If they win it all this year, the media will likely want to go with the redemption and finally time to move on angles. They shouldn't. |
