I know this is not OOTP’s decision. The point I am making is that the Cleveland baseball club has no right to erase history and prohibit the use of the name Indians for seasons prior to 2022. I only play historical, and now given this insanity you can no longer accurately play historical without it being a major pain in the ass.

So can you understand why this is frustrating?

There will likely be another option. See post #95 in this thread.

Was at the home opener last night and was happy to see a decent amount of people in Guardians merch. Not a ton, as of yet, but a decent start. Maybe 20%.

On the contrary, they have every right to set out the terms under which their brand will be licensed.

They also have every right to operate their brand without regard for what OOTP is, who you are, or how you might be inconvenienced in a video game.

Second, they're not "erasing history". You're more than welcome to pick up an encyclopedia, textbook, or visit Wikipedia and still read all about the Cleveland Indians and their place in history.

I don't want to get drawn in to all of the 'stuff' going on in this thread but I have a thought for historical simmers that just might work very easily. What if you simply replace your Teams.csv file in the OOTP23 stats folder with the one you used for OOTP22? The 22 version we know certainly has the Cleveland entry with the proper nickname for each year.

No idea if it works but as long as the formatting does not change in 23 it should be able to do the trick just fine. To test with v21 and v22 I made some changes to my OOTP21 teams.csv file and they worked just fine when I copied them to my OOTP22 stats folder, so fingers crossed it might be a very simple solution. And easy enough if one wanted to that you could simply copy and paste the new 2021 data lines from the upcoming OOTP23 file into the OOTP22 teams.csv you are replacing them with.

That could be a good idea. I’m not familiar with the teams.csv nor how often it changes from version to version. It’s probably risky to just copy and paste the file into 23, but I think there will probably be a properly modded file made available by someone soon after release (hopefully)

will this affect your game when your import your OOTP 22 game into OOTP 23
will this cause a error or problem with the imported game when you import the cleveland indians in your league

They’re changing the value of a text file used for new leagues, so doubtful. It’s always a good idea to back up before you import, however; even if the program does nothing to the name as I think will happen, things can always go wrong.

So how does this apply to the Indianapolis Indians (Pittsburgh AAA) or Spokane Indians (Colorado High-A)?

Unless I'm mistaken, I think it has been made pretty clear that this is only an issue around licensing rights and the expressed wishes of the Cleveland franchise of MLB.

As teams you are referring to have nothing to do with the Cleveland franchise, I see no reason there would be any effect whatsoever on them.

Gotcha. Must have misread initial post. I originally read it as it was MLB's decision, maybe that was someone's reply that I mistook as official.

Confusion is understandable as this thread went way off the rails pretty early on.

But here is the exact wording from Markus original post:
"However, the official stance of the Guardians franchise is that the previous nickname "Indians" must not be used in any MLB licensed products, which includes OOTP 23. Of course we have to abide to these guidelines. So, when you play a historical game, the Cleveland teams (plus their minor league affiliates that were called "Indians") have been renamed to "Guardians"." [italics mine]

So, again, at this time at least all that has changed is how the Cleveland franchise, including not just the MLB team but any minor league affiliates of that franchise, are affected.
Since the teams you mentioned are not Cleveland franchise affiliates, this particular rule in order for OOTP to remain in legal compliance as an officially MLB-licensed product does not affect how the game handles these teams you mentioned above.

EDIT: So I thought that I probably should check to see if either of these teams was ever an affiliate for the Cleveland franchise. It does not look like the Spokane Indians ever were but the Indianapolis Indians were from 1952-1956. So I am guessing if you're playing historical in that five year window that there might be an effect on that team's nickname, but someone with actual official knowledge would have to answer that specific question.
