I thought it was a calm and reasonable discussion, overall. The principle, that racist nicknames don't belong in OOTP, isn't 'PC gone mad'; I think it's something we'd hopefully all agree on. Now this particular case is obviously debatable, judging by the many views expressed in this thread. I had fun learning about scratch DJs and wrestlers, in any case.

I debated posting this at all, since I agree completely with ashante that this thread should be done. Both sides have expressed their views intelligently, and the fine folks at SI should have enough to think about on this issue.

Final proof that this random nickname generation was not meant to be racist or inappropriate--- there is no way anyone named Javier Olivarez would have ever been invited into the KKK let alone have been named "Grand Wizard".

But if this nickname offends by all means, edit it out. While you're at it, edit out names such as:
* baldy, skinhead - insulting to the follically challanged
* shorty - we can't be derisive of the height challanged
* mex, dutch, frenchy, etc - or any other nickname that may impunge on a Nation's sense of honor
* big train ( as in Walter Johnson ) - "pulling the train" has sexual connotaions... a big train must refer to an orgy, right?
* dizzy and daffy - who would make fun of mental illness?
* and on and on and on

Well, as far as the physical infirmities go, I don't think "Dummy" is in there either, though I could be wrong. And I love how being polite turns into PC if you don't agree with the particular politeness and you are a bolde. I'm not trying to bring the full force and weight of the magical PC Police down upon OOTP, I just don't think it's very nice to include reference to the leader of the Klu Klux Klan, and I fear that not nice = fewer sales. It doesn't matter if African-American members of our message board don't mind; it's still not very nice.

The flip side of this is, it would take Markus and Co. 3 seconds to delete it from the nickname file in the next patch and that would be that. The "delete it if you don't like it" works the other way as well (which was the point of my original post in this thread; you can make nicknames as offensive as you want them to be in your own league using a little tool I like to call the editor tab). Personally, I think it's far nicer to leave racist nicknames out and allow people to add them in at their own leisure than to go the other way around.

My wife was offended when I was playing NCAA 2007 the other day, and my offensive lineman went down with an injury. I told her "Mike Hunt just got hurt", and all I got was a dirty look.

Oh for the love of God,just change the nickname if you want. Grand Wizard shouldn't be a KKK thing only. It can be used in many different things. Stop being so politically correct.
