If it's any consolation, I think it's a bad trade as a Giants fan. Accardo is a solid arm, don't be thrown off:

ERA: 4.91
K/BB: 4-1
K/9: 8.9
WHIP: 1.21
HRA: 2

One of these things is not like the other. He's also got the upper-mid-nineties heat and solid breaking pitch to go along with those peripherals.

Yeah, I think my initial reaction was more of a kneejerk one. Thinking about Accardo's stats more and reading what articles have to say about him, I'm quite a bit happier now. He's young so who knows what will become of him, but he looks and sounds good so far. Our offense is not as good as before (the drop from Shea to whomever gets the job is nothing, it's more the depth that hurts), but it's not that bad (Zaun, Hinske, Johnson, and the cat all deserve more playing time) while our pitching seems like it might have just gotten quite a bit stronger. I was a fan of Hillenbrand's (Anyone who says he was a bad offensive player needs to give their head a shake IMO. Was he a great player? Hell no. But he certainly wasn't a bad one either.) so I guess I was just hoping for more of a proven player. But you really can't expect much more from this given the situation and we might even be lucky for getting this much.

true. If there wasnt' intrest from multiple teams we would have ended up with absolutely nothing, which stats aside, his attitude makes him worth that.

WEll it would in the real world.

I dont' realyl know how to take this trade because I din't know the guy that we got back in return. Can sonmeone give some illumination? From what UG's posted he seems to have a real gun on him, yet gives up some runs (I guess everyone does nowadays?)

Hillenbrand is the epitome of average, though as a 1B he's below average offensively.

Accardo's K number is probably a fluke.

Hillenbrand is pretty average in every way and might be a bit overpaid. Would have been a great asset in secondary half-regular roles, and serviceable for teams with holes.

As a Giants fan I'm happy about the deal. It at least gives us a bona-fide major league hitter at 1B, not Neikro or Santos or whomever.
You guys will like Accardo, but for the present (which with Barry is key, in more ways than 1) it's a win-win deal.
