The issue with selling seasons like that is that OOTPDev does no curation of individual seasons. You want to play 1971, you import a database, the game runs an algorithm to turn the DB into player cards, and that’s that. A game like Strat or Diamond Mind, they also have algorithms they run of course but they also put in a decent amount of hours making subjective judgments on fielding and baserunning, adjust players to control for that, make more intricate adjustments per player than just the overall effect of a ballpark on their handedness, and so on and so forth. Even OOTPGo doesn’t ship with that algorithm so they sell seasons for a dollar apiece to cover server time, etc.
If OOTP turned into a “pay for seasons” model, I’m pretty sure it’d be an immediate money loser; regardless of how well PT is doing right now, I’m sure that by far the largest source of revenue is still the base game purchase just because everyone who plays for any reason has to buy it. For those of us who play fictional leagues and who are otherwise OK with investing our own time, that’s pretty much all she wrote. But even if they went free, they’d need to find some way to entice people to buy seasons above and beyond “it exists”. Maybe that will become more of a thing if and when they change the engine over to use modern statistics and as such need to devote actual time to curating individual seasons. Without stripping out a crap ton of currently available features, I just don’t see how on earth they’d do that right now or any time soon. And if anything OOTP has followed a “we build the base, you customize it” methodology from the beginning, which also means that if anything they’d have to drastically expand their crew to include new graphics designers (to take the place formerly filled by volunteers like silvam14), season curators, and so on. I’m also interested to ask what other sports games with similar user bases to OOTP do this. Football Manager sure as hell doesn’t, and they even spend a lot of time on (current year) curation (their fan base does a lot of the work on curating foreign and lower level leagues, which would make a switch problematic, but, um, see above). Mogul doesn’t do that. Even the replay based games that force you to purchase individual seasons still require you to fork out as much if not more than what OOTP costs every year.

Because it was an absolute ridiculous and delusional suggestion.
It starts with "I am not predicting it" but then goes on to predict an laughable proposal. Everyone can have an opinion, but that is all it is, and is not based in any form of reality. |

The numbers I used were made up. The business model I used is exactly the same as is used in their mobile product. Neither path forward would surprise me. I was simply stating that after following this series for almost two decades that moving to a free to play model would not surprise me at all. |

This is basic economics. It is remarkable how many people today don't seem to know it. Aside over. Back to the regularly scheduled thread conversation. |

It’s also not printing money exactly and it’s irresponsible to talk like this. We did like 3 rounds of “quantitative easing” during the recession in 2008-10 where we assigned trillions of dollars to the banks and it didn’t do anything to inflation (it might have staved off deflation, which, as bad as hyperinflation is, deflation is way worse than what happened in the past year). Inflation happens when the velocity of money increases. It’s not just money being out there, it’s people using that money over and over again.
And over the past few years it was caused largely by supply chain issues, the world spending more and catching up from COVID, and the war in Ukraine. Inflation has been a worldwide phenomenon, not some wild scheme by some modern version of the Weimar Republic where it’s only the US or someone printing up lots and lots of money. The US was a little higher than some nation states - but not all of them - due, probably, to the COVID stimulus, but a. that accounts for all of something like 1% of the 8% rise, and b. it’s a perverse penalty people are attempting to extract here where people actually using money sent to them to purchase goods they obviously desperately needed (since, unlike QE, that money was used and not socked away in a drawer) is supposedly responsible for all of this. https://www.economist.com/by-invitat...s-of-inflation https://braddelong.substack.com/p/my...-as-of-2022-04

Doesn't the current version of the game get a 50% off discount every year around the All Star break?

Let’s give the government some credit for cutting inflation by more than half in the past year, against some strong headwinds. There’s only so much Congress, the President, and the Federal Reserve can do. Pandemics are beyond their direct control, and we consumers make terrible decisions sometimes. The worst aspect of inflation is exacerbating inequality. The wealthy are immune, the poor have no options, the middle class gets squeezed. But I’m happy to be paying $3 bucks a gallon for gas, instead of $5 (and looking forward to that EV some day).

Yes, which is coincidentally when it becomes worth buying.

Literally the entire Western world had a period of severe inflation over the past 2 years. Is this the One World Government’s fault?

I'm enjoying the new version as I was able to successfully import my OOTP 23 world with all leagues, histories, etc. still in tact. I'm still doing some testing on posting of foreign players, but so far, every thing feels pretty similar to my experiences in OOTP 23.
