I actually still have the original game, I am thinking about putting partition magic on my computer and loading win98 so I can play it again..

You basically just sim out games hoping the computer coach calls the game like you tried to set it up. (And it hardly ever does.) There's no skill envolved at all. What kind of challenge is there with FOF? None.

I'm in a few Action PC leagues and was in 2 FOF leagues, now down to one. I'll be ending my FOF league here after 1 more game, cause franckly, FOF is a crappy game to use for online leagues. Not even close to being as much fun as a Action PC League.

To sum up, there's only one thing FOF does better than Action PC Football, and that is it has a built in career mode, where as with Action PC, you need to buy the next season, unless you are willing to create players to use in a draft. (Which I'd be willing to do to be able to use a far better game.)
So there is no career mode in action pc football? So You don't finish a season and players age and you sign free agents and sign contracts or anything? I was thinking of buying this game but I like career mode..

Nah, not that kind of game. Season Ticket Football was a version of Action PC Football that (theoretically anyway) had a career mode, but it was really, really awful.

Theres quite a few Action! PC Football online leagues that have career play built into them. So yeah, if you get into one of those leagues, many of which have been around for years and years, you can have career play complete with player aging, FAs and rookie drafts.

KRFL Homepage

United Front Football League

There are two links to just a couple of them. Check them out. The first one is more detailed than any FOF league I've ever seen or been in.

There are a lot of Diamond Mind Baseball leagues out there where they start in, say, 1960, and you own the players as the league progresses. That's not the same as DMB actually having a career mode either.

Are you on the Action Sports staff or something?

No, I'm not on anyones staff. A guy asked if Action had career play, and I said if you got in an online league you could play it that way. (Which is true.) Not sure why you are comparing Action to baseball games all of a sudden. I take it you're on the Anti-Action staff? I guess you're like that episode of "Lost in Space" where they had the exact opposite of "John Robinson?" The good one and the bad one and they fought on that walkway up in space? (Remember, the good one won.)

Does this mean you're quitting the AUFL?

It depends on what you term "career mode." If you mean like in OOTP where players "develop" in ways that may not be tied to real life (without recalc on), then no - APCFB doesn't have that kind of career mode. If you mean can you play in a league where you keep the same players and progress from season to season with free agency, rookie drafts and so on, then yes... sort of. You have to buy the season disk for each year. It's basically akin to the way Diamond Mind works. You can carry contracts over and so forth and the game will set up your rosters when you install the next season disk, but the players each season will be modeled on that particular season. There will be no big surprise (or bust). You'll know exactly what you're getting.

Having said all that, I love Action football - and I also love FOF. Much in the same way that I love DMB and OOTP. When I want to do a straight replay (or play head-to-head), then APCFB and DMB are the choices. If I want what I call "true" career play where the future's not set in concrete, then I play OOTP and FOF. Now if FOF had even an ounce of customizability (a huge strength of OOTP), it'd be truly awesome.

Comparing these two games is like comparing DMB and OOTP. Both are great games (as is the case with the football games), but they're like lions and tigers - both are big carnivorous cats but they're not the same species.

I've run leagues in both FOF and APCFB. I guess the fact that I currently have 2 FOF leagues and no Action leagues says something, but I do play Action, mainly in solo play and I've got pretty much every season they've made (which is a BIG financial investment).

Well, that's a good question. I have tried really hard to get into the season. I don't think I missed sending in one game stage file all year, but I just can't seem to get up for the game. I guess I just enjoy playing head to head and calling all the plays during a game.

I know you spend alot of time on the league and do a great job with the website and have proven to be one of the better commishes I have seen in any type of league, and you should really have team owners who put in quality time with their team. I just can't seem to do that with FOF. I stuck out the year mainly because you put in the effort you do.

But since you asked me here, I'll tell you here I guess. No, I'd rather not start another season. This would be a good time to get a new owner since the playoffs are still underway, so it would be a good idea to do so. I wish you the best and would highly recommend the AUFL to anyone who wants to be in a FOF league. I had the 1985 Chiefs and led them to a 8-8 record, 2 more wins than they had in real life that year, so the team is decent. Contact "legendsport" if anyone is interested.

Alternate Universe Football League - Home <----This is the website. As you can see by just the look and feel of it, the commish is a good one.

Well, you'll be missed, but I can certainly understand based on what you've said in this thread.

And thanks for the kind words about the league. I think it's a good one too, but of course I'm somewhat biased.

The first version was on the PC and they should make it know Free with Rosters just before this years Draft.

Know if they rename the game to Football Coach because we need a Football Game that's like OOTP because it would be fun to have lets say Tom Brady get traded to Arena League Team like Arizona Rattlers for so on or Jason Taylor to lets say the 93 Cowboys for Ackman and so on. The start date be before this years College Draft so my team Orlando would get the first pick and Draft Matt Ryan.

Know if they made NBA Coach,MLB Manager and NHL Coach that would be good to.

I like FOF & Action Football but both are lacking for me.

FOF does a lot of things well and I have purchased every version - but its UI and especially in game experience are extremely lacking.

Action has a decent enough interface and I really like the in-game experience - but at this point I need full career play to keep me interested long term.

what I really want is FOF/OOTP depth career of play

with OOTP customization and mod community

and Front Page 98 style playbooks & custom plays

Front Page 98 (but modernized) style graphics

I want coach only play that produces realistic statistics

and I want it all in an attractive modern easy to navigate UI

Because of all this EA Head Coach 08 was my most anticipated game of all time and subsequently biggest disappointment (for failing on almost all of the above)

Now I was stunned that EA announced Head Coach 09 and despite the absolute train wreck that the first one was I will still buy it simply because it has the potential to be my dream game. I did read that they have fixed the two of the three biggest problems I had with the first one - one being the completely inane decision to fix the quarters at 5 min and the excruciating user interface. no word on my third issue, the absurd statistics like dozens of 2,000 rushers and some even in the 3,000.

I am concerned with a couple of typically bad EA decisions I have recent read about such as:

1. they killed all football on the PC which is just terrible. The last few Maddens have actually been pretty good in coach mode. Not perfect but better than almost anything since Front Page
2. are only selling it bundled with Madden - not a huge deal because I would have purchased both games anyway - but the concept is bad

I guess the one good news from the preview videos I have seen is that the game has been completely reworked from the ground up with no code at all surviving from the previous edition.

This is only going to made available packaged with Madden 09 for $80 or $90 I can't remember. I personally don't like it cuz Madden is trash, but I would like to try out Head Coach, what do you guys think?
