Why does Gibbons get into (or nearly get into) physical altercations with his players?

I'm surprised he yanked Lilly, and apparently, so is Lilly.

More trouble in BJ Land

Uh oh, Gibbons goes to take out Lilly who was coughing up an 8-run lead. Lilly shows him up on the mound.

After Gibbons went back to the dugout, there was an apparent scuffle in the stairs behind the dugout. Lilly is such a jerk, but Gibbons looks like he has lost the respect of his players.

The ship is sinking... ...

Rule number one in every baseball team, don't show your manager up. Lilly was out of line.

FWIW Gibbons is probably toast too.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that Lilly was right to do what he did on the mound. I'm not sure what happened in the tunnel. All I'm commenting on is that this is now multiple players who seemingly have had fights or near fights with the manager. To me that means the manager is either a bit of a hothead or he's completely lost control of his team.

I'm totally speculating, though. I don't follow the Blue Jays closely.

I think you are right. I like Gibbons but he seems to have alienated his players.

You're surprised he took him out?

After giving up 5 runs with none out, then letting two more get on with one out?

I would've taken him out too.

If Lilly's pissed, he should be at himself.

That being said, I don't disagree about Gibbons. I'm really starting to think he may have to go.

why for some reason am I getting flashbacks of 1988 with Jimy Williams losing it and Lily=Jimmy Key? Lily reminds me of him in so many ways....eept I dont' know if ily is a leftie or not.

I was just surprised because it was only the 3rd inning and he still had the lead. Usually a solid veteran pitcher like Lilly is given the chance to work himself out of the jam. I'm not saying it's a wrong move to yank Lilly, just a little surprising.

First Zaun is upset at JP for bringing in Molina who will take his starting job. Then JP constantly rags on AJ for being injured. Then JP goes after Wells and Gloss who are both having very good seasons. Then the whole Hillenbrand and Gibbons fiasco. Then Molina gets mad at Gibbons for not enough playing time. Then JP trades Hinske, who has actually been playing well, to a team they're chasing and Hinske, who in the past always seemed like a guy who kept his mouth shut, says he's thrilled to be out of Toronto. Then there is a report that Wells won't resign, which I predicted, but Wells is now denying. Now Lilly and Gibbons get into a fight in the locker room? Did I miss anything? Anyway, the point is management needs to go and the sooner the better! I can't recall a worse season publicly for the Jays. From a team that was expected by many to grab a playoff spot, this has been a complete disaster. I can't believe this.

ESPN's reporting Gibbons ended up with a bloody nose after the altercation.
Also says cameramen saw Gibbons push Lilly 1st.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2556925

I didn't see any blood on Gibby, nor do I see how any cameraman could've seen what happened down in the tunnel.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Lilly gone just like Hillenbrand was....

Dang..too slow on the trigger

...as much as you're free to badmouth JP, you do know that mikev was being facetious when he posted that, right?

actually no I did not.

Which is good. I was wondering if JP was taking GM advice from the Maple Leafs front office or something.

Gibbons needs to go and if JP can't get it together in the next year or so, he needs to go too. He's made a few good moves and he's a huge upgrade over Gord Ash, but...I'm not really sold on this current regime yet.

You let Delgado go, then you sign AJ Burnett for waaaaay more than market value and there is no way he lives up to that deal short of winning Cy Youngs in consecutive years and he's not going to be mistaken for Roger Clemens anytime soon.

Some of the other deals are just questionable, too. Token efforts to prove that the team is committing to winning is not the way this franchise was successful during its peak and so....getting back there needs to reflect what got us there during the first 20 years.
