I don’t remember Rocksmith going subscription based… I do remember them having 5 billion songs and one having to buy a whole ton of DLC in order to get them. I also remember that this was basically Rock Band only with real instruments and as such was never, ever going to be anything but the tiniest of niche markets. I thought the game was great but then I’m a bass player…

You could actually use it with pretty much any guitar that produced sound. The real key was the pickup cable it came with (which you had to buy separately). I’m honestly not sure how good it was for actually learning guitar though but it did help me recover some of my bass playing chops from college so that was nice (and let’s be honest it’s a lot of fun).

I tried to teach myself how to play the “real” guitar over COVID but to be honest the need to build up calluses is soooo annoying. You play for like a couple hours on the first day, boom, you’re limited to like 15 minutes for the next couple/few because you have to wait for them to grow in. Ugh.

$50 on low end, if they added more depth to the franchise and improved game sim presentation I'd probably go as high as $60. The problem with nearing $60 you start to get compared to more graphically advanced games like the show.

The idea that OOTPD is a small developer still scrapping by month to month is fiction.
They are a medium sized developer now with PT as their chief revenue source.

Markus accidently said the quiet part out loud years ago. It was the version of OOTP after the first iteration of PT.
They used to offer pre orders and a 10% discount on Steam.
Several people including myself asked why for that version they were not doing that any longer.

Markus then said that with PT revenue they no longer needed that pre order revenue.

From that time on I pretty much stopped thinking of OOTP in terms of an indie game developer.
And I also now don't really care if I order from Steam or whatever flavor of the month webstore they are using.

The actual sales themselves in terms of copies sold are not how they make their money.
This is now a games as a service and PT makes the bulk of their revenue.

I don't think any additional revenue is going to get us a better game.
They saw a large revenue spike when they turned into a games as a service model and if anything, we saw the pace of development slow.

If anything, I would think if they felt like they could get away with it, they would move to a free to play model where they offer the base game for free and then charge for individual seasons and of course PT.

Like they do with the mobile game.

Have they ever released the numbers on that? I'm curious on your sources?

Like they do with the mobile game.
That would save me some money. Let's do that.

PT Plus gives everyone a chance to spend $7 per month for extra PT benefits.

I'm curious: How much more would you be willing to pay for the game if it meant Markus could afford to hire an extra 3 to 5 programmers? Either a one-time price or a monthly subscription model.

I know what my answer is and I'm curious to hear what others say.

Don't ever tell someone the max price you'll pay for his product.

Not that I've seen, but I also haven't been looking. Doubtful, though. I'm speculating based on 1) the reported revenues that other live service games take in, 2) the fact that for the several years I spent many times the amount I paid for the base game on buying Perfect Points, and I wasn't even a mid-level whale according to the (lack of) success my teams were having, 3) this game likely having a higher average age of players than other live service games, meaning more disposable income

Wait. so you don't use antivirus software? Interesting. I'll make a couple calls.

(which, look, I don't really want OOTP to go to a subscription-based service either, and I don't think OOTP wants it, and I think this entire post and subsequent argument is entirely heat without light, but hyperbole is funny)

Back then, the game was still selling for the same price as it is today, which is untenable from a business and financial standpoint. Ultimately, it should probably be priced at a minimum of $59 to protect against future inflation and bring pricing more in line with industry standards.
You are correct. And this is most likely the last year the game will be priced at $39.99. It has been like that for basically a quarter century now, and enough is enough...

PS: I don't like subscription models for games...

I can't wait for the overreactions to this about a year from now.

No worries, we'll start communicating this shortly... well, basically now, haha

To be honest, we initially wanted to raise the price this year already, but we reconsidered. I mean, everybody is doing it at the moment, so swimming against the current is kind of nice sometimes...

Windows comes pre-loaded with Microsoft's antivirus and it's pretty good, hope you aren't paying a subscription for that

Windows Defender? It’s… fine. It’s definitely better than nothing but no, I have McAfee as well. You do you, I guess.
