Mostly asking since i changed the baseball talent level of a lot of countries, and don't want to do that work again lol
You should be able to use the 1.1 world file with the new names files without causing any problems, but the newly added sets (Canada, Haiti, Luxembourg) won't be used. Name sets that already existed and have been updated/improved, you will get those updates.

Got it, thank you. I use both Canada and Haiti so will use the new world file.

Thank you so much for these, they really have made my leagues better.

Hey I spotted the same issue with the namepack. Is there a way to remedy the missing flags?

All the flags on all the screens? Or just certain flags or certain screens? It could be something that changed in OOTP22, I can see if I can find out. Is anyone else having this problem?

Looks like it's all flags on all screens, like the nations have been disassociated with the flag images or something. It's not a gamebreaker by any stretch, purely an aesthetic thing that would be nice to resolve

[edit] Strange, I went back on this morning there and the flags have returned. Maybe a game restart is required after installing or something! Ignore me!

Yeah, idk why this happens but it also happened to me. I didn't need a full game restart, just went back to main screen and loaded the save game again.

Thanks for the feedback about the flag issue. I'm working on a new version of the world_default.xml file is more in line with the structure of the file used in OOTP22, and I think that will fix it. It should be ready in a week or two.

Also worth noting for newbies, every new patch will overwrite these files. I usually save a copy of them in the names folder for this purpose so I can just drag and overwrite them after a patch installs. You'll notice it when starting a new league, existing leagues should be okay if they have the files/world.dat already updated.

That's what I do too: I keep a copy of these to avoid losing them when a new patch comes out.

I also enjoy these more updated names because I find them a lot better than vanilla OOTP's name set.

Will someone update this eventually to fit the changes made in OOTP 23 to the way names files work? I feel like attempting to use the tutorial in the List of Name Mods thread is only going to end up in a lot of frustration for me.

I absolutely will, but I haven't gotten the new version yet so I don't know what changes need to be made. If anyone knows the details of what needs to be modified for OOTP23 let me know in this thread.

Imported leagues from 22 will maintain the same name structure. It's only new leagues that will use the new name file.

I'm not importing a save, but I am grateful for the knowledge. I really need to work on writing for clarity.

So the names/first name/nickname/korean name files have been combined into one xml file. (names.xml)

World File looks like it stays the same

Here's some examples of the XML.

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<NAME_FILE fileversion="OOTP Developments 2022-04-19 11:34:03">

<FIRST_NAMES>
 <N nid="23"><EN>A.C.</EN><ES>A.C.</ES><KR>AC</KR><JP>交流</JP><CN>交流電</CN><NL><L lid="0" dist="1"/><L lid="39" dist="1"/></NL></N>

.....

</FIRST_NAMES>
<LAST_NAMES>
<N nid="16"><EN>'t Hart</EN><ES>'t Hart</ES><KR>트하르트</KR><JP>ハートじゃない</JP><CN>哈特</CN><NL><L lid="6" dist="16"/></NL></N>

....

</LAST_NAMES>
<NICK_NAMES>
<N nid="595"><EN>Abnormal</EN><ES>Abnormal</ES><KR>괴짜</KR><JP>異常な</JP><CN>異常的</CN><NL><L lid="-1" dist="-1"/></NL></N>

....

</NICK_NAMES>
</NAME_FILE>

Looks like no repeats of names. If a name appears across multiple namesets then that is dealt with multiple <L> tags within the <NL> structure.

Not sure what's going on with the nicknames. The default set includes a lot that say this: <L lid="-1" dist="-1"/>

Some of the names too don't have the <L> tags so assume they don't actually appear in the game at all?

As you can tell by the <ES>,<KR>,<JP> and <CN> tag this file is also used for translation purposes.

Any name:

  • with dist equal to 0 or -1
  • with lid equal to -1
  • without <L> tag
will only be used for translation purposes.
In this thread has already been some discussion about the new names.xml and how to mod it.

Good evening and sorry to disturb, but I have once again encountered an issue

The world default file here and the one that comes with the game vary by 4MB and I've attempted to simply use the one made for this nameset but it seems when importing it into the game it produces ridiculous results such as Australian players being given Hungarian names and Latin American players being given Caucasian names.

I believe the issue no longer lies with my ability to convert these text files into the name file but the World Default XML since I went into the file and Hungarian has 28 as its ID and in this year's version Australian has that ID. It's very much going to be a pain to rearrange which is which when importing into an existing save. I'll try making a new save with the files provided to see if I can reproduce the results.

Chances are, the nationalities that it uses are wrong and you have to make sure the nationalities correspond with the country. It's going to be a HUGE pain to expand the name files customizability in this new format. I'm sure the localisation (and pilfering some of the existing name sets we used) make it worth it for OOTP Devs, but for anyone who was a fan of the relatively easy from which we could edit/add/modify name sets/ethnicities over the past few years, this is a much bigger pain than messing up uniforms to add 3D pants.

I've given up on trying to fix this for now, because it's going to seriously take a long time to do this in a way that's not manual. I don't have time to build a script to convert the old txt files to this new format.

Clearly no one on beta is from the mod community anymore, because...we would've flagged this for you months ago.

It's inelegant, but I'm keeping my copy of OOTP22 active so that I can create new leagues with flexible name files and then import everything into OOTP23 how I like.

I've got my names files converted over to .xml and I'm 99% working. If I remove the nick_names portion of the xml it loads without error and seems to work perfectly. When I use the complete file, I get an error in the nick_names section...which is strange, because I didn't alter this section, except for renumbering the names IDs to avoid duplication. I must have a syntax error there somewhere, I'll go through it and hopefully get it working shortly. Once I do, I'll make a new post as a Names File 2.0

You are a legend! I always zero out nicknames anyway, haha...so this will be great.
