Admittedly I do fictional leagues but the shape I'm describing is exactly what I see across eras.

AI Manager selected Al Oliver as its starter in CF. This team is a Division winner

OK? And I will guess that he is in fact one of the worst fielding CFs in the game. What does his ZR look like? In any case, it looks like his hitting made up for that, and I would not expect him to start there with any regularity, but yes, the AI can make decisions like that too.

I think the only position where you really can't make as many glove v bat decisions is at catcher, and that's because there simply aren't that many players who can catch. I personally also don't like putting guys with straight up 20/80 arms or overall fielding ratings behind the plate, which seems to be a thing with older players more than it is with inexperienced ones, but I do think that IRL you see more, like, .190 hitters with no peripherals starting significant games at C than you do in CF and SS even though those are bigger impact positions on defense (also there's the fact that, barring injury, one good SS or CF can start 95% of your games whereas you always have to factor in, say, 20% of your catchers' innings going to the backup).

Can't tell about ZR. He was injured four months of the season. AI played him all the way through a WS win.

I had Oliver earlier in the game but let him go (don't remember the details) when his CF rating dropped and I didn't have a spot for him in LF, RF, or 1B.

It will be interesting to see if AI tries to upgrade CF over the winter.

Interesting here that while on one hand I'm saying its sometimes the right move to play poor fielders at CF at the same time I avoid someone as bad as AI chose here... and AI has the World Series Trophy.

Just a quick aside about this. To the OP, pay particular attention during ammy drafts to players that have catcher eligibility (at a reasonably high defensive level) that are cosmetically marked at other positions, they are generally undervalued because once you switch their position cosmetically to catcher, the potential rating will increase based on the positional scarcity/offensive profile that plays better there.

Also, check out any pitchers in the ammy draft that are actually position players (or should be), disguised as pitchers. I've found a 3 star potential 1B/OF in Troy Neel in my 1985 ammy draft that was a 0.5 potential reliever but had a bunch of 60's in his offensive profile. When I drafted him in the middle of the draft and converted him cosmetically to OF, he magically went from 0.5 star potential to 3.0 and I had a top 100 prospect simply because he was marked as a pitcher.

And, well, vice versa. On my fictional Denver Brewers squad I currently have a potential 5 star starting pitcher who has been the #1 prospect in the league two years running who was disguised as a first baseman in the draft. I got basically the best pitcher in the draft in the 5th round because I thought to check for this.

Check 1B too. I don't draft for 1B because I figure there's always someone in my organization who needs to move there soon, but occasionally there will be someone listed as 1B who is competent at another position.

Yeah I didn't really realize this kind of thing until after my inaugural draft and saw "pitcher" Terry Steinbach get drafted by the AI in Round 40-50 something and I was like "wth? is that some pitcher with the same name I never heard of?". Nope was the catcher and he blossomed as expected. Now in drafts I definitely sift through this type of thing very strongly in my prep work. I kind of like it though as a fun exercise/surprise what you might find.

Presently, for instance, your SS probably won't have any evaluating at 1B. That is on the grounds that the positional evaluations are dependent on edge appraisals (Range, Arm, Error and Double Play) and Experience. On the off chance that you play your SS at 1B they will get awesome there. Your 1B can likewise play SS, however will most likely be horrendous

I played a decent handling 2B at 1B in spring preparing in light of the fact that I had a swarmed IF and by opening day he was 20/20 at 1B. In any case, no chance he'd play there except if a heap of individuals go on the IL.
do you got Tourettes?

I was reading the manual and found the following that ties in to the discussion in this thread. It is regarding the different pitching rating meanings (stuff, movement, control...): "You can see the change in a pitcher's Stuff rating if you change the player's position from SP to MR and back."

I find that very interesting and it shows that you can't rely on the given position a player has. Like always in this game, you have to look closely at ALL the numbers.

After AI creates lineups and rotations the positions often change. The initial positions are in isolation without team needs considered.

Now, for example, your SS might not have any rating at 1B. That's because the positional ratings are based off of the defensive ratings (Range, Arm, Error and Double Play) and Experience. If you play your SS at 1B they will get very good there. Your 1B can also play SS, but will probably be terrible

Certain positions rely more, relatively, on certain ratings. CF and SS - range. 3B and RF - arm.

There's a link in my signature to user studies. One study is about defensive positions. That might be useful to you. Note, though, that the information about LF may not be correct (see my post at the end of the thread)

This article talks about the defensive spectrum
https://blogs.fangraphs.com/position-adjustments/
exception is small SS.
some of the best defensive SS can only get to 70 as 1b.....i assume mostly due to height.

Should I assign every player his best position rating or am I missing something here?

I bought the game yesterday, so bare with me.

Thank you!
OOTP is too loose with defensive position changes.
An outfielder is an outfielder, an infielder an infielder, a catcher a catcher in the game.
Whereas in real life there are nine distinct positions on the field.
But some people have a lot of fun with this flexibility, even in real life.
So it's pretty much up to you whether you'd like to go with the higher rating or try the player out at another position...his rating will go up as he plays said position; and rather quickly. Unless he's out of position. (Then he'll continue to perform poorly.)
So they aren't abusively loose; just too loose for my preference.
