What is going on with SI Boards

I go there and this is what I see? Why are they making it a paid service?

We are currently implementing our paid subscription services for the OTF. Please check back later.

45% complete

3 levels of membership on offer

Gold - Access all areas (including the mods room)

Frankincense - Access to all standard forums

Myrrh - Access to the OTF only

You decide!

I am not going to be paying for a site to go to if that is where I have to download OOTP! What is going on?

There seems to be growing sentiment that it's a joke. SI have done big jokes like this in the past, but usually it's around April Fools Day. If you really read the thread that I linked to, the more you read it, the more it feels like a joke.

This will be interesting to see. Marc Duffy is all over a thread where people are asking questions and outraging. In some posts he's coming off as a real D**khead. Many regulars suspect that it's some elaborate hoax.

Someone over there just touched on what I think is really going on. SI is planning some sort of huge announcement at 9am tomorrow. That's why they are trying to get everyone to flock to the site at that time to "check out what the fees will be."

The first thing I found odd was that the lowest level just gave OT access and the highest level also gives access to their Moderators Only forum. Yeah. Right.

Of course it's a joke. The sad part is that I didn't recognize that obvious fact before posting in the thread. Gold, frankincense and myrrh levels, indeed. I'm embarrassed.

It may be a joke (and they sure got me with it), but that doesn't mean that paying for stuff like that isn't in the future.
