I agree with Steve here. FOF2004 does a VERY good job at keeping stats...HOWEVER....Jim (the developer) had stated that importing of stats/leagues/careers from version to version (like OOTP) most likely will NOT happen.

Those stats and the leagues history mean nothing then, if you have to start over version after version.

That killed it for me.

I have only played the demos, but FOF looks better. What I like about FOF the most now is I have bought FOF: The College Years which is the college sim of the pair and once I buy FOF, I can use draft classes created from the college game - including see where players I've recruited, red-shirted, started, gave extra help to keep their grades up, got to graduation, and then see their pro career. I'm buying FOF soon for that option especially.

Anyone who has played FOF:TCY ...

I love EA's NCAA for the gameplay AND the recruiting, etc. However, I have been thinking lately how much fun a GOOD text based college sim would be.

So for those of you with TCY, is it awesome?

Any responses would be great.

FOF-Excellent
TCY-Ok (don't like the fact that 75-80% of the game is recruiting) But if you like that kinda thing you may like it. I rarely play and 9 times out of 10 I just use "auto" option to sim through a season so that I can use the game exports for draft classes for FOF.

I Think, that the Front page sports football was greatest football sim ever created

You could make your own plays, actually play the games, i wish they would bring it back with all the new ideas they got in like madden and what not.

i like FOF too though, i just long for more depth

I'd say w/ the nature of the board here that most wouldn't be interested in a NON-career mode sim though some may. Thanks for the info.

I agree totally. I had every version that came out, including the infamous recalled version in 98. If Sierra hadn't gone and pulled the plug on their entire "traditional" sports franchise in order to pursue things like rodeo, they'd be on top of the market. Rodeo? Rodeo??!!!111

I never played their baseball game, but I still think their '98 football game is STILL better than the current iterations of Madden and the like. I never liked the graphics heavy football games. I was never any good at playing them anyway! I prefer to be a coach/GM.

I loved FPSF98 too.

Actually, if you check out that Maximum-football link given earlier in this thread, some of the screens look remarkably like the FPS style of play.

I bought FOF2004, and it could be a great game, but the presentation/graphical interface sort of makes me want to throw the computer out the window. That's honestly the only thing that keeps me from playing FOF :P

I've started checkout out FOF2004 some. Are there any league files available that have the complete NFL record books, rosters, coaches, etc...

Players, yes...none of the others are not able to be changed as far as I know.

What are the most accurate rosters out there for FOF2004. I downloaded one set, simmed the 2004 season had only 2 of the top 8 in catches were WR (three were TE and two were FB).

I don't know, BUT if you are looking for "accurate replay" stats then http://www.dksports.com is probably what you want.

I'll offer the alternate view. I am a huge TCY fan, but never got into FOF to the same degree. TCY is a different challenge than FOF, and there isn't really anything like it. Constant turnover and immersive history keeping works best in this setting, IMO - it's great fun trying to remember the stars of the Ohio State team of 2006, etc.

Recruiting is the game's blessing and it's curse. It's interesting and innovative, but as Steve says, it can be a pain. Especially keeping track of who you are looking for.

Only problem is that playing with the Solescmic 8 is a pain (it ruins the realism for me when Lowell end up as the 20th ranked team in the country ). The other issue is that while you can export and draft in FOF, you can't simulate a draft in TCY - I'd like to know if any of my guys were picked up by NFL teams (especially Britt Sancho, the New Mexico QB who took the team on his shoulders and took them to a BCS game for the first time in their history, coming 4th in the Heisman).

FPS Football Pro is the reason I will never buy a Sierra product again. FPSFBPro 98 was the last game they could develop on the original engine and the next installment was supposed to come out with an entirely new engine. Everything was going along fine with development, great functionality, great graphics, the play editor was to die for...

Somewhere along the way, Sierra'a parent company was bought out by Cendant which was in the midst of trying to cover up a huge financial scandal (they cooked the books to show more profit than they really had). Anyways FBPro 99 got rushed out before the end of the year and it was a fooking disaster. Nothing worked the way it was supposed to, the documentation was awful and everyone soon realized that we were sold a woefully incomplete product. Sierra pushed it out the door, knowing that it wasn't going to be a working product...ever...and I mean ever.

The financial scandal began to become more public and Sierra announced that it was refunding us our money and getting out of the sports sim biz. I got my money back, along with some vouchers for other Sierra games (yeah right).

I loved FPSFBPro but more importantly it had developed a great community of players over the years.

EDIT: Hands down FOF2004 is the best FB sim around.

You know, when I heard the news that Sierra was going belly up, I had some mixed feelings about it. They had provided some of the hands-down best games of their time, but they also completely ****ed over (I censored myself) their loyal fans with FPSFB'99 and in that respect they deserved every bit of bad fortune (or lack of a "fortune") that came their way.

I work for a very large corporation, and completely understand how impersonal business decisions can be. However, if my company had knowingly done what Sierra did with that game, I would have walked out. Well, first I would have embezzled, THEN I would have walked out

Anyway, FPSFB '98 is still a one-of-a-kind game, and nothing has touched it since. Don't get me wrong - Madden and ESPN have their good side, but they only area they exceed FPS is in the button-jamming department. Sure, you have some basic "owner options," but I'd sacrifice every one of them to have the game integrity of FPSFB (the good versions, that is...).

Maximum-Football looks to capture the forgetten niche of those gamers who have longed for what FPSFB'99 should have been. It was referred to me by a couple of people here on this board, and it looks to be excellent. While I've heard that the first incarnation won't include a deep career mode, the plans are there to expand it. Here's hoping. In the meantime, I still have my CD copy of FPSFB Pro '98, and if it didn't crash half the time on my computer, I'd be playing it to this day (btw, the first two versions are available on your favorite abandonware sites, everywhere).

I believe Maximum Football also lets you play Canadian and Arena football, as well as the American version of the game.
