Paul Hamm is the Man.

Recovers from a horrible vault (dude fell over into the judges stand!) to NAIL his final two events and leap from 12th to the gold medal.

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.

Yes, I actually watched gymnastics tonight. *boggle*

Great comeback, and great Olympic story. Felt bad for the Koreans, they really gave all they had as well.

You definitely shouldn't feel bad for them. They weren't predicted to get anywhere near a medal, so to earn a silver and bronze is a great achievement for the country. It helped, of course, that seemingly everyone else screwed up somewhere.

Unbelievable. Sure it was gymnastics, but that'll go down as one of the most memorable sports events I've witnessed. This was one of those rare times when everybody wins: Hamm got his gold, and Koreans made a big splash with the two medals. I guess the Chinese guy blew it, but whatever, he's a commie.

Yes. But he was practically perfect.

I don't know which was better, Hamm's comeback to win the first gold medal in men's overall for the U.S. EVER, the women's 4 x 200 free shattering the oldest swimming record by over 2 seconds, or the shotput being decided by a tiebreaker.
Great day.

Well, didn't see this. Can someone merge my thread from OT with this one?

It was an absolutely amazing comeback. He nailed the high bar routine. Had he nailed that vault, it wouldn't have even been close. But it was ...

Hamm won by .012 points.

You gotta hand it to the Koreans. They never won a medal (any color) in gymanstics (man or woman). Couple that with the fact that a US Man has never won gold and we've witnessed history tonight.

Take a look at the score breakdown. And be sure to read the CNN story, where the 4th place finisher (who obviously ended up losing bronze) said he was mad. He failed to realize that bronze was already within reach for Hamm heading into the last routine.

But, as the news pointed out, as World Champion, Hamm is given benefit of the doubt.

On to the girls tomorrow.

I firmly believe that gymnastics is a sport.

Did anyone else think it was amazing that the "oldest swimming record on the books" turned out to be only 17 years old? I can't think of many other sports where the athletes are so far ahead now of where they were just a decade ago. I suppose it's a natural progression in sports like track and swimming, but still, I find it pretty crazy.

What I'd be interested to know is the percentage decrease in the records from 20 years ago. If it's a small % you can chalk it up to the super small drag caps and suits.
You can even write off a moderate % to better training and longer training since athletes today are specialized at younger and younger ages. It's at the point where a 7 year old is already pushed not only into one sport but a certain role in that sport.

The image of Hamm shaking his head "no, no" when his coaches told him he won the gold is going to stay with me for sure.

Fantastic sports moment - I had muted my TV and turned music on while I was on the computer after he blew the vault. By luck did I go back to watching just as he started his last event. Amazing.

Gymnastics judges suspended for key scoring error; final results unchanged

posted August 21 @ 8:52, EST

ATHENS (AP) - The International Gymnastics Federation suspended three judges Saturday for a mistake they made in scoring the men's all-around final, but said results would not be changed and Paul Hamm of the United States would keep his gold medal.

The error in Wednesday's all-around cost bronze medallist Yang Tae-young of South Korea a tenth of a point that would have given him the gold.Yang received a start value of 9.9 on his parallel bars routine, a tenth lower than he received for the same set in team qualifying and finals.

After reviewing a tape of the all-around, FIG officials determined he should have been awarded a start value of 10. He scored a 9.712 on the event. With the extra 0.1, he would have finished with 57.874 points and defeated Hamm by .051

Hamm won the meet over Kim Dae-eun of South Korea by 0.012 in the closest men's all-around in Olympic history. Yang finished third, another 0.037 behind Kim.

USA Gymnastics president Bob Colarossi likened the mistake to protesting a bad call in a football game several hours after it was over. He said he didn't think this put an asterisk on Hamm's medal. Hamm scored 9.837 on parallel bars and high bar to close the meet and rally from 12th place to first.

"Paul Hamm's performance the other night was absolutely incredible," Colarossi said. "It's unfortunate the judges didn't have the right start value, but the FIG didn't have video replays" at the event.

The South Korean delegation asked for a review of the scoring after the meet, and FIG met Friday to look at the tapes.

A FIG news release announcing the decision said that "The FIG rules do not allow for a protest against judges' marks. The judges' marks have to be accepted as a final decision and cannot be changed."

Still, the suspensions were necessary "to protect the integrity of the FIG, the judges, and to be able to maintain and ensure the highest possible judging standard at the Olympic Games."

FIG did not release the names of the suspended judges, who will not be on the panel for Monday's event finals.

But Spain's Benjamin Bango and Oscar Buitrago Reyes of Colombia were responsible for determining the start values. America's George Beckstead was the panel chairman, and therefore had ultimate responsibility for all the judges.

Unfortunate for everyone.

That's horrible now he has to live with a "spoiled" gold medal. I feel bad for the guy.

Well, they only gave McClure a 9.5 start value on one of his routines and some of the announcers thought that may have been a little low and he ended up with 9.1 and some change. Had, Hamm been stripped, you could be sure that USA Gymnastics would have filed a protest for McClure.

Unlike the figure skating disaster of 2002, I'm sort of surprised that they didn't end up awarding double gold.

Regardless -- Hamm is in line (with Carly) to get major endorsement deals (as Mary Lou did in 1984).

And for the Korean, who will never have another chance to win another. Joint golds should have been awarded, as mentioned above.

Now the Koreans got yet another reason to hack our way to death in all online games.
