If they allow this, then they'll have trouble enforcing the rule when someone puts an ad on their hat because they sold out. This is about enforcing a rule across the board, no exceptions. It's great that Foulke wants to wear the flag and all, but to grant him an exception could open the flood gates.

I can actually understand MLB's position on this. Heck, if they allowed it, next thing you know, Spiderman logos might appear on bases.

I wonder if this would still be the dumbest thing you've heard if say, Hideo Nomo wanted to wear the Japanese flag on his hat?

If Larry Walker were to wear a Canadian flag on his hat or Carlos Delgado a Puerto Rican flag on his or eegads, Jose Contreras a Cuban flag, or even one of the Matsui's a Japanese flag, how would you feel about this?

EDIT: Doh, twins beat me.

Hey if a guy wants to be patriotic to his country I don't see a problem with it.

Ah, well then no problem because that's how I feel too. I thought you just felt that way about the American flag.

I just wouldn't want to see MLB players start looking like nascar drivers. I coulda sworn I remember seeing some players and managers wearing flags before anyways.

Its a uniform, uniforms have standards or they wouldn't be called uniforms.

Before they changed the regulation recently, American soldiers who were not deployed could not wear the US Flag insignia on their right shoulder when not in a forward unit.

Now we all wear the insignia due to regulation change because the logistics of having them sewn on and removed every 6 months indefinately was just ridiculous.

Perhaps when President Bush leaves office we will eventually have some soldiers with nothing on their right shoulder again.

Heck, if they wouldn't let David Wells wear Babe Ruth's cap (which was actually the same design as the current caps), they sure as heck won't let anyone wear a cap that looks different from other players'. I actually don't have much of a problem with MLB's ruling on this, and I think they're handling it about as well as they could -- trying to work with him to resolve the situation rather than just issuing an edict on it.

but at the same time, like previously pointed out in the thread, a uniform is just that...an outfit designed to make the team look uniform...football players get in trouble for wearing their sox too high or on the outside or something stupid like that...and that is less of a change than a flag...the socks aren't even an addition to the uniform, just a modifcation on the appearance.

As much as I hate Bud, I don't see anything wrong with this decision. The rule across the board is "no altering the uniform in any way". I can understand them not wanting to get into the whole evaluating on a case by case basis because that's just going to open up a whole new can of worms because of the subjectivity of the situation.

Keith Foulke should have worn the South Dakota flag on his hat...

If he really wanted to start a stir with Bud, he could wear an ASG '02 patch on his hat.

I don't understand what the fuss is about. It's against baseball's rules, just like corking your bat is.... except that corking your bat hurts your performance.

I'm glad with the ruling.

I'm just saying as long as it's not too big and not offensive I don't see a problem with a patch on a baseball cap.
