are there any benefits playing fictional league?

Im the type that usually downloads the latest rosters/logo's/patches....and plays a real 'MLB' type league. But im loving this game, and would like to full around with the bells and whistles..and create a customize league with some different rules.......and team names..... i was just looking for some input on those that play fictional leagues.....if possible can you list some clear benefits to playing fictional over a MLB league with roster sets.

thanks

Hmm... Good question.

Here's the top benefit...

No preconceived ideas about how your players will perform.

Here's the second...

You create your own baseball universe.

Those are the biggest draws for me. But, istead of creating a long drawn out list, how about a little inspiration? Just click on the link below and see for yourself what you can do with a fictional league, some personal ideas and your imagination.

The biggest thing for me was that there were no preconceptions about how a player should perform. Plus, you can design the teams and league however you want. I always liked being the GM of the Antartic Penguins. Shame the stadium had to be domed.

Edit - Dreamteams beat me! And said about the same thing...

Fictional leagues are far better in my opinion, primarily because I prefer to create completely imaginary worlds. It really is a matter of taste though. Modern leagues seem to be far more popular and I guess that is because people want to see if they can do better than the professional GMs and coaches do.

Sigs have been disabled. Or am I the only one who can no longer see them?

I believe signatures have been disabled right now in order to help cut down on CGI messages.

Here is the link to DreamTeams league, far and away the best solo fictional replay I have seen.

http://www.sportplanet.com/sbb/jerse...p3/metros.html

I used to be an exclusively historical replay guy but seeing leagues like the Metro League has got me hooked on fictionals as well. It takes a little time to immerse your self in the league but if you start with a smaller league size (say 8 to 16 teams) it is far easier to learn all the players.

Just noticed that. I wonder why as they are so helpful when used correctly.

Im thinking of creating a league with all the different retail chains. Target, Kmart, Walmart, Bestbuy, Circuit City...etc seeing which one i can take to the top. Is it possible to have expansion teams enter the league as the years go on?

For me I find that its tougher to get started and stick with a fictional league, especially if you just throw it together quickly. MLB-style leagues can be easier to get through the first couple of seasons as you feel more familar with the names.

That said, when you make a league and spend time in the creation process, come up with a back ground story for your league, have unique logos and stadiums, and whatever else you can think of to make your experience have more depth it will make all the difference in the world.

Once I start learning the teams and players, seeing who are the power houses and doormats are, seeing who are this leagues stars...you really start getting into it. I find myself wondering who will end up a top the career leaderboards when the first batch of guys start retiring. I like not knowing how high the bar is set...until its set.

Sometimes it can be a fun to have a MLB style league with fictional players. One of my most favorite leagues I played was one where I started a fictional league in the year 1900...simmed to present day stopping only to expand. Once my OOTP league caught up with present time, I chose a team.

In the end, it comes down to what you "prefer" to start with. Once you get into it far enough...they all become fictional leagues.

I created them using the FaceGen program. I think you can still get a free demo copy of FaceGen at www.facegen.com. Sorry, don't have a facepack. I just create the faces as the players earn them through various accomplishments.

I love fictional. I've just created a 99% fictional league. (7 teams use the logo and name of teams from the now departed Canadian Baseball League)

12 teams. Already, two months in, there's players that are starting to shine. That's the big selling point for me, like other have said. No pre-conceived notions as to who is good and who ain't. Plus every few years I create several players, totally at random, then in a few years check on them and see how they're doing. (Usually they're stinking up the minors, but the occasional one rises to greatness.)

I liked them for OOTP5 (because I was boycotting my tigers for being so ****ty)....but I had a hard time sticking to mine for 6, it takes a while to make it a baseball "universe" and not just a random assortment of players.

My leauge for 5 lasted 6 years (I decided to start a fresh with 6 becuase of the ratings system) and only by about the 4th year did I really start understanding the league.

Besides in modern leauges, 6 years into it there almost all prospects and players drafted anyways

Other than replaying the deadball eras up to the 30's very quickly, I tend to have no interest in real players as it makes it too easy to find good players for your team.

For overall immersion and challenge I go with fictional players, but use logos, facepacks, etc. to enhance the feeling.

I prefer fictional by far for reasons that have already been mentioned. The other thing I always do with fictional is I create a small league...16 teams max. It's more immersive when you know most of the players, and with 16 teams getting to know all the players is not as overwhelming.

Once I settle into a league with v6 (I'm still toying around with it) I want to try having one league with 8-10 teams. I saw Henry's solo-league site, and it inspired me to try the same. The only thing keeping me from this is the lack of playoffs with one league, but I may just throw them all in the same division and be done with it.

Most people who try fictional that I've talked to don't go back. If you do searches in this and the OOTP5 forums, you'll see a plethora of good ideas for them.

Someone asked about adding teams later on in your league: yes, you can import, simply add, delete, or move any team to your league from league setup-->edit league structure. There isn't any expansion draft built into the game, but you can sort-of simulate one by filling minors with fictional players, assinging some cash to each team, and then participating in both free agency and the rule V draft. Not perfect, but it's worth a try.

Benefits to both really:

With the modern league its usually easier to setup. DL a logo set, roster file and stadium kit and your good to go in 10 minutes. You know the players and can play with your favorite team.

However with a fictional league you can create a Utopia of baseball (in your eyes).

Do away with the DH if you want, cut it down to 2 divisions (no Wild Card). You can modify if you want a huge HR league or a deadball league or something in between.

Your league gets its own records, own superstars to emerge. You get your own Babe Ruth or Ty Cobb. You get your own first batch of Hall of Famers and players to name awards after.

No getting mad at seeing Ichiro hitting in the .270s or Jim Thome only mustering up 15 HR's.

I use a fictional leauge, but I can see why someone would like a Modern Day league (I can use MVP or ASB for that though).
