Defensive indifference

Not sure if this is the right place to post but I just had 'defensive indifference' scored for a steal of second base, in the second inning of a 3-0 game. As a former official scorer, I'm raising my eyebrows at that one, and also at a catcher who wouldn't bother to make a throw in that instance.

I have seen the same a couple of times, even after I threw to first.

I've never seen this in any of my games. That's fine with me as I think defensive indifference is not a legitimate stat and serves no purpose. I wish MLB would go back to the old way. A stolen base is a stolen base no matter the circumstance.

In the 2nd inning? Yeah, that's not right. Late in the game, sure, that could be legit, but not in the early or mid part of a game.

Even if the catcher's arm is really bad and/or the runner is really good at stealing bases, I'd still give them a SB. DI should only before for those late game situations where that runner (on 1st) truly doesn't matter and all they're really doing is trying to fool the catcher into throwing there so the runner on 3rd can more easily score to win the game, or something like that.

My recollection is that DI used to be absent from the game. In fact, I recall complaining about that. Perhaps it was added imperfectly.
