Historical Draft Values Cheat Sheet

This spreadsheet has the debut classes of every season in history with players ranked by their career WAR value in column E. I have also included a Total Runs Created Wins value in column D for reference as well.

The WAR values are adjusted for positions, so if you have two players who are pretty much the same offensively, but one plays CF and the other plays 1B, then the CF will have much higher WAR because it is harder to find good offensive players in CF than at 1B. Remember that WAR stands for Wins Above Replacement level.

The Total RC Wins do not adjust for position and are the total amount of wins from offense and defense the players contribute. These values are based on neutralized stats, include defense, and are also adjusted to the scoring level for each season in the career of the player. There is no positional adjustment here, just their contribution to changing the score of the game.

By default, the list is sorted by season and then by WAR.

When drafting you should always consider the needs for your team, so if you already have a great 1B and the top players available when you make your selection in the first round are another 1B and a SP, then that SP is probably more valuable to your team even if the 1B in the draft is ranked higher since you have 4 or 5 slots in the rotation whereas only 1 player can start at 1B.

This may help anyone who plays historical seasons with the rookie draft, particularly if you are less familiar with certain eras in history.

Charley (Old Hoss) Radbourn.
I like to look at list like this and if a name is unfamiliar to me I try to find out a little bit more about them. One name that stood out to me was Charley Radbourn. Wiki has a nice article about him.
He is the all time single season leader in wins (60). He also led in ERA and KOs that year and started over 70 games. His shoulder became very sore during the year and the article explains why he ended up pitching so much. A few years after retiring he had a hunting accident and passed away at age 41.
One other notable thing about Charley. Wiki has a picture of him giving the finger to someone and it’s the first known photograph of someone giving the finger to someone.
Thank you Garlon for spurring my interest.
