Voodoo would flat out not fly in the modern era.
Pelicans is historical, as is (sort of) Jazz and you could do something with the latter to note the city as the birthplace of that musical form. I think “Zephyrs” was briefly a minor league team name there as well; kind of a way of invoking the wet weather without like making them the Hurricanes and evoking memories of Katrina (which, depending on how far out the save is, even Hurricanes could be okay? Like, Chicago has a soccer team nicknamed the Fire, for example).

Then again, you might considering naming the team after "The Loneliest Bayou" in Louisiana.

Not your question, but in my contemporary sims I move the Pirates to New Orleans, and rechristen them the "Buccaneers". So that they are still pirates but also get a new name in a new city that definitely had real pirates hanging out back in the day.
But we all have our bias and predilections. I can't stand "Expos" or "Astros" as team names. A defunct, money-losing fair and a dated reference to space travel now taking place in Texas and Florida? The transplanted Rays are the Montreal Mounties. And, with a nod to history, Houston is the Colts - without the gun reference.

Good distinction. (Also, good luck in that part of the country.) I assume, then, that the nickname and logo would be horse-related; perhaps a usurpation of symbols from the football team.

Houston should have been Buffaloes (long-time Texas League team), Colts, or something connected to Texas and the Lone Star state. Team nicknames should be taken from the town history and culture. Just a good nicknames is fine, too, that doesn't have to be connected to the town. It would be good to be connected to baseball, but doesn't have to be. Just a good name would be fine like Cowboys, Broncos, Buckaroos, Chiefs, Tomahawks. To often today, teams pick silly names just to sell caps, jerseys and cheap teeshirts. New Orleans Baby Cakes is one of the most ridiculous names of all time. The people in New Orleans hated it. The team was gone a year later, gone to become the Wichita Wind Surge, which is not a very good nickname. I spoke with the GM complaining about Baby Cakes and he said it would make them more money. He didn't care if the fans didn't like it. Sorry to be so traditional, but I want baseball teams to be traditional and related to the town in some way or be associated with baseball elements in some way: Yankees, Red Sox, Brewers, Braves, Tigers, Bears, Sluggers, Blue Sox, Cardinals, Redbirds, Hot Shots, Giants, Dragons, Cyclones, Bulls, Tornadoes, Wolves, etc. Montgomery Biscuits, Rocket City Trash Pandas, Wichita Wind Surge, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, Omaha Storm Chasers, Biloxi Shuckers and Fort Myers Mighty Mussels are not good names of a baseball team. What does a baseball player have in common with a Biscuits, Jumbo Shrimp, Storm Chasers, Wind Surge, an oyster shucker or a Mussel or a clam? What in the world is a Trash Panda? For 25 years they averaged 5000 to 6000 per game. The team went down when the local owners sold it to an out-of-town group. Despite the dislike for the goofy name Baby Cakes, the team still drew 4000 a game their last season, even knowing the team would be moved soon. They were not losing money. It was the desire of the new owners to move to a new town. They never intended to stay in New Orleans. Wichita built them a new $75 million dollar stadium. The people of Wichita did not like the nickname Wind Surge, but the management kept it anyway, just like they did in New Orleans. Team support in Wichita was 3300 a game in 2022. They lowered ticket prices and concession prices in 2023 and reported attendance improved to 4600. The New Orleans Saints are really the only game in town, although the New Orleans Pelicans NBA team has been drawing better in the last year or so. New York no longer has a particularly large Dutch population and hell in that case I don't even think you could argue that in the 1940s when the Knicks (Knickerbockers) first started playing in the NBL/BAA. The Dodgers are named after a phenomenon that was part of Brooklyn, not LA ("trolley dodgers") and which I don't think is a thing in any US city anymore anyway (I guess San Francisco has a trolley line and, like, light rail is kiiiind of like trolleys, sort of, but that's a stretch and people have figured out since the 1890s that it's not a great idea to walk in the middle of the street anymore). The A's are no longer an arm of the Philadelphia Athletic Club; indeed, that particular franchise never was.

I've always used New Orleans Mudlarks in my fictional universes. The forum user txranger created a wonderful logo for them, which you can find in his thread within the mods subforum.

There was wonderful amusement park in New Orleans named Lake Pontchartrain. It was a fantastic place with rides galore, arcades games, great food, all on the banks of Lake Pontchartrain. It was a New Orleans institution for 50 years... 1930s to the 1980s. It was the place to be in the summertime. Each night at 7 o'clock there would be a popular singer or group -- Elvis was there in the 50s -- or circus act like the Flying Wallendas... and it was free admission... no charge for the great entertainment... you only had to pay for the food and rides. Naturally, it would be assumed that the team was named after the Beach’s ride, but it wasn’t. The baseball club had relocated from Denver where it was named after the Rocky mountains’ rushing winds, known historically as “zephyrs” Last edited by Eugene Church; 09-03-2024 at 10:42 PM. |

Yeah, "Zephyrs" was kind of an accidental perfect name, especially since the team played its first four seasons in NOLA on the campus of the University of New Orleans. Their original temporary ballpark was literally a couple of blocks away from where the old Zephyr rollercoaster used to be.
