Question In Game Options: BC Advice and Notes

While playing a game, two questions:

- Is there a way to take notes in the middle of a game?
For example, I tried to steal with Larry Herndon of the 84 Tigers, he was thrown out BADLY. I would like to take a note in the game, hopefully, without having to save and leave the game, then come back.

- Is there a way, while in the middle of a game, to ask advice from the Bench Coach?

What would your note say?

What I'm hoping is that there is a mechanism in the game to take notes that can accumulate from game to game, basically just a notebook within the game. I'm just keeping my own in a note in a note taking app for the moment. Maybe there is a note that's attached to the player that follows him into the game.

No there is not BUT all the info for every player is there for you in the game. The arm of the catcher is shown below his name, the running and stealing aggressiveness and stealing numbers are all there when a player is on base. So, not sure why you would need notes when all the info is on the screen, in game.

Also it is not all just about the runners speed, stealing ability and catchers arm, you have to account for the pitchers hold.

There is no closeness of the steal created by the game engine. He is either safe or out. What you see in the animation is not data.

Thanks for the replies.

How about asking for the bench coach’s advice from within the game? Is that something OOTP has?

FWIW, I take notes (in Joplin or Google Docs) while I'm playing out postseason games. Then after the game you can click the "Edit Recap" button and include whatever you want. But I don't, I just keep it wherever I had it.

I don't think you can ask your Bench Coach for advice, but I like the idea! Like even if there was just an ask for advice button to press and then say it flashed the corresponding button for the advice would be cool. It would give those of us who might be afraid of controlling offense and defense a bit more confidence if we saw what the BC often advised. I also really like seeing the scout's draft recommendations even though I almost never agree with him. It'd be cool to see those times in-game where you'd think, "no, AI, I know better than you (or at least I think I do)".

I handle only substitutions. Someone else, I think maybe Syd, plays that way too. I edit the manager so his tendencies match mine.

Digital Diamond has the BC advice feature. I know the game well enough to make my own decisions, but it’s nice to get a second opinion. I may be thinking it’s time to pull the pitcher, the BC also thinks this, but will also recommend who to bring in which is nice.

One other thing I was looking for in OOTP that I don’t see is a scorecard. I see a box score and a game log, but I don’t see an actual scorecard with things like P8, or 6-4-3, K, that kind of thing. I love to keep a scorecard sometimes while I’m watching a live real game.

Cool. Maybe the devs can check that game out. Thanks for pointing it out!

Yeah, it's long been asked for, but I think the thought is just not enough people probably want it. I'm a big fan of them (I even posted somewhere here the ones I made up for my non-OOTP use) and some others here are big fans of scorecards / scoresheets too, but maybe the devs are right, that's it's just too niche of a feature to be worth working on. Eh, maybe one day one of the devs will take an interest in them and knock them out.

livebaseballscorecards.com is a really cool website that keeps live scorecards as MLB games are played. They also keep archives of games going way back. I love this site.

There's also a cool subreddit called r/BaseballScorecards where people post their scorecards from replays, live games, games they attended, whatever. It's interesting to see the different ways people keep score, I'm always picking up new tips to improve mine.

I appreciate all the feedback I've received in this thread.

I fill out scorecards on occasion when playing out a game. It's fun and helps keep the practice fresh in the old noggin

Thanks for the link to the livescorecards, never knew it existed. Awesome to poke around and look at score cards from games I remember watching as a kid

I agree, being able to ask the BC for their opinion would be a nice add. I've been delving into manage only mode a fair bit the past couple versions and there are times when a 2nd opinion would be great. Even if I didn't agree, it would give me more ammo with which to make a decision.

Isn't it cool? I did the same thing when I first found out about it, started going back and looking at games from when I was a kid, old time games from the 40's and 50's. It's a nice companion to Baseball Reference.
