Q&A: How can I best *find* the answer to a question I have? / How can I post better?

Q: How can I best *find* the answer to a question I have? / How can I post better?

A: First, have you searched well enough? That's a separate Q&A.

If you have, then:

-First, find the appropriate board to your question and post to it. Don't just post it to some random or general board. A lot of us are specialized in our knowledge and we're more likely to see your thread if it's on the appropriate board as we probably check it more than others we're not as interested in. For example, if your question is about Perfect Team, or historical games, modifications, or a feature request, find the appropriate board and post to it. And also please make sure you're posting to the board corresponding to the version of the game you have. Just because it might be about a previous version doesn't mean it won't get seen. Some (many?) of us primarily use the "new posts" forum feature and so we'll still see it.

-Second, try to be as clear and concise in the body of your post as possible. If you're a stream of consciousness writer, that's fine. After you're finished, take another look at it, re-read it, and ask yourself if you can make it make any more sense. Are the paragraphs too long? Does it need better punctuation? Is the spelling decent? Should it be broken down into point form? The easier it is for us to make sense of your post, the more likely we'll spend the time to try to help you.

-Third, if you think that a screenshot might at all help a would-be responder, include a screenshot of your game. An image of what a person is seeing often helps me greatly in helping them and I'm sure it helps others a lot too. Again, help us help you. It's not that hard to do either, just follow the instructions of this post and then this one.

-Fourth, is there some additional info about your game or computer that you think might help us? Like what Markus posted in the second half of his post here. If you think it might help, include it.

-Fifth, create a good title for your thread, one that gets to the point of your question. So many people don't put nearly enough thought into their thread titles and as a result they get far less views. If I see a rather ambiguous title, unless I've really got nothing better to do, I'm mostly likely not even going to open your thread. But if I can understand what the problem is right from your title and I think I might be able to help, even if I don't really have much time, I'm probably going to at least read your post. And there's a reason why I put create a good title after creating the body of your post as often a good title will just come to you after you've finished your post whereas before you haven't put as much thought into the problem yet.

-Finally, if after a couple days your post hasn't gotten a response, or at least not a sufficient one, it's okay to bump it (reply to it yourself). Bumping is usually considered acceptable while spamming the different boards with duplicates of your thread is not. Sometimes threads get buried by others and the people who can best help just might not catch them in time. Just don't bump it every hour or every day for days on end.
