Stuff vs. Control vs. Stamina ...help me decide which SP to draft
Apologies for this shameless and selfish post -
I finally got that #1 overall pick in my online league, and the college class is super weak (and I HATE drafting high school pitching). Which of these starters would you draft first? - Should I favor Stuff or Control? (My ballpark in San Francisco) - Is 45 enough Stamina to be a starter? Can the new OOTP25 lab improve Stamina? - How much should I value a lefty? - Gibson is 20yo and Durable, Ratley is 22yo and Normal - how much should I value youth and durability? Thanks! Drafting a SP #1 overall is such a risky proposition and with how lame these two pitchers are, are you sure there's not 1 batter you'd rather draft?
If I had to pick between the two, I'd go with the lefty. Not only do you get the lefty advantage, as a starter it really helps to have control whereas not having the extra stuff doesn't hurt you as much. Yeah, the righty has much better stamina, but with the poor control that stamina won't matter as much. How are their intelligence and work ethic ratings?

The left Ratley has high work ethic. Gibson has high intelligence. College class is just rough this season. And I don't need anymore OF's or 1B's.

You could still draft a OF/1B and later trade a different one for a proven pitcher. Do whatever you want of course, I just don't like the injury risk of a pitcher and the greater difficulty in developing pitchers. A superstar pitcher probably helps you more than a superstar batter, but it's just, in my experience, difficult to develop superstar pitchers and keep them healthy. EDIT: I do hope you choose a pitcher otherwise you'll probably hate me if the batter busts ( ), but I'm just more trying to make the case for next time.

While neither is terribly exciting, take the guy who's more developed. That control on the right developing will be a lottery ticket. If Brad goes anywhere, I bet it's as a Reliever.
PS - the more I look at it, the more I think they both have tragic flaws haha. Probably worth taking a flyer on a batter with some unicorn talent on it's own. Last edited by Guthrien; 06-21-2024 at 09:17 PM. |

I'm not too big on Ratley's stamina to be a Starter and he doesn't have a Fastball. Control is an issue for Gibson. If those are your only 2 choices, I would draft a hitter.

I developed a spreadsheet to input all the ratings for players under the Editor screen. I have a formula that calculates total current and total potential, using the potential total as my tool to who would be the best player and then highlighting who is 1st or 2nd in each category. I have been using for a few seasons now and seems to help me. Attached is a screenshot. If you take notice, Norm Ru, the 2.5 star potential player at the bottom has a potential total of 2,568, which is higher than a bunch of the 5 star players. He wound up going in the 1st round, so it looks like my spreadsheet does have quite a bit of accuracy to it. I have another tab for Pitchers but i didn't display it.

Change your uniform color scheme to Red & White, draft Brad Gibson and make him #45.
Then the baseball gods will smile down upon you. I mean, he's got 3 good pitches instead of 2, better velocity, higher stamina, better durability and is 2 years younger so more time to develop. Seems like an easy choice to me. High strikeout pitchers can get away with lower control, and that gives you an EASY choice to make in the development lab. |
