Excited to see what this patch includes.

Is the games development really as broken as some are making it seem? Excited to get my franchise rolling!

No, it is not broken and still works. It just need tweaked in different ways so it will not be so overpowered in certain aspects.

Sorry for piling on, I know the last few weeks must have been a handful. In regards to the public beta, is that only through your website or is it going to be downloadable through steam also?

As a software engineer myself, I kind of laughed when you said there was a lot of work to be done, but gave a time table of today to get it done (also thanks for the transparency), but went radio silent there for a bit. Glad to hear everything is going well!

Yes, the grifting translator should be a storyline!

Though I doubt MLB would approve.

I do think the system comes in a little heavy against players, but not gamebreakingly so. For example, my standard candle for a truly replacement-level SP historically is Jeff Locke. I loaded the OOTP16 world into OOTP25, and it grades Locke as a 35/35.

Is that low for a truly replacement-level player? Meh. Not too-too low. Maybe he should be 40/40 if you have a slightly higher opinion of what a multi-year SP with a career 1 RA9-WAR & 3 fWAR should be. But even that's a very debatable maybe when you reflect that Locke had dipped into negative RA9-WAR by then.

I think once they iron out a few things, the representation of the 20/80 scale will be one of the more on-target changes from OOTP25.

Plus, some of the shock is watching RP's get their heads cut off in ratings. Some of that reflects that 20/80 isn't really aimed at RPs since the vast, vast majority of MLB pitchers were SPs at some other level. TBH, it wouldn't hurt to reimagine the 20/80 scale a bit to better quantify RP performance. If the standard is the standard, then logically an 80/80 RP should be Mariano Rivera. Maybe you think of Mariano as a 100/80 guy just to leave some room for today's best to be 80/80.
It's not just Fangraphs, it's how the MLB itself attempts to grade on a 20-80 scale: every 10 points is supposed to be 1 standard deviation off, so if the average ballplayer is a 50, 2/3rds of everyone currently in the league should be between a 40 and a 60. Baseball talent is distributed on something more like the far right end of a bell curve so this is more about the above-average guys but... that means that something north of 95% of players (97%ish?) should be below a 70 and you should get maybe 1 or 2 guys in a 30 team league who are an 80.

That's not underrating or anything, that's how the game really should have been grading guys for years.

This sums it up pretty nicely from FanGraphs:

Quote:
Relievers are hard to value in this sense, as many people and scouts would say you’re crazy to not call Mariano Rivera an 80 since he’s the best ever. The problem is that assumes he’s as valuable as Mike Trout, which significantly fewer people believe, but still some people would (with some statistical adjustments for postseason leverage giving them something to point at)

Well some of what I've read here makes me wonder if I should start my long play season or hold off. I kind of sense some ppl are just nitpicking but I am not experienced enough at OOTP to say for sure.

If you have auto-updates turned on, Steam will automatically update once steam approves the beta/patch. If you do not have auto-update on, once it receives approval, you will manually install it in steam just like any other update

that depends more on you than on the game itself, every year there are different things that the developers are adjusting to satisfy and correct some bugs that may or may not make the game playable.

Last year the big issue was the trades, teams traded 3 or 5 prospects for below average players as it was also common to trade players from the Top 100 ranking (not very frequent IRL), in several patches this was adjusted until it was corrected.

The problem and what should be important for you is if these game bugs are so strong to avoid starting a long sim, as many patch changes take effect when it is a new game, as well as others will take effect during your previous simulation.

I want to import Negro League players into a modern-day Hall of Fame save along with other historical players. Will I need to start a new game when the patch drops to see the improvement in Negro Leaguer ratings?

I guess I dont know of the bugs myself because I've not advanced far enough to produce them. So short of someone spitballing complaints I dont know what is and isnt a real legitimite issue just yet.

I also think that many of us (me included) are used to want to have in the 26-man roster between 10 and 12 players with elite potential (over 70 on the 20-80 scale) and any adjustment of the engine to make the players more "average" makes a lot of complaints about the development engine.

And another thing that has been discussed in the last few posts, that the average player is "55" is because as scouts see it or at the offensive production or pitching level, he is an above average player.

It is not the same that the scouts think that all players are "55" and at the end of the season there are players with WAR of 7, 8 or 9 or at the end of the season the maximum WAR is 4 or 5, because in the last case if there would be a problem in the engine.

While it is encouraging to see so many new folks with OOTP and on these boards, perhaps it would help to make a few points that a new player would have no frame of reference.

I have been playing since the late 90's and OOTP has always struggled to get as much finished and polished as possible for release in a spring training timeframe.
Unfortunately, that puts pressure on the Devs- when do you abandon one season's game to start on the next? They only have about 9 guys total to get the work done in a finite timeframe. A large new feature like the Dev Lab will need adjustments along the way, so will ensuring the ratings change is implemented the right way, even with an expanded beta team.

Personally, I have learned to not bother getting serious about starting a GM-only game until April most years. Sure, it kinda stinks, but there is nothing we can do about it but support the Devs with constructive feedback. Meanwhile I am fiddling around with different teams and figuring out new features where I can and playing some Perfect Team even though I am not serious about it as it isn't something I like much. Find a bug or wrong player info and report it when you can.

Try to be patient guys- things will get better soon. Throwing accusations and unhelpful complaints only serve to poison the board. This isn't a large studio with plentiful assets to throw at issues so don't treat them as such.

The code is valid. Can you try restarting Steam? That might fix it.
