Re: Sandberg vs Whitaker/Grich, I think both Lou and Bobby deserve to be in there too.

I'm also glad to see Molitor rallying here. He was in danger of not being inducted by us but looks like he may have climbed over the 75% mark as of now. Molitor was one of my first autographs collected as a kid. He signed his 1980 Topps card in ballpoint for me before a spring training game in Palm Springs, CA. I got him, Yount, and Gatner all on the same day. I still have all three cards.

With 15 votes so far.....
Bert Blyleven 13/15 87% Paul Molitor 11/15 73% Alan Trammell 7/15 47% Dennis Eckersley 7/15 47% Ryne Sandberg 5/15 33% Rich Gossage 5/15 33% Jim Rice 4/15 27% Ted Simmons (write-in) 3/15 20% Bruce Sutter 3/15 20% Dale Murphy 2/15 13% Juan Samuel 1/15 7% Steve Garvey 1/15 7% Tommy John 1/15 7% Don Mattingly 1/15 7% Luis Tiant 1/15 7% Molitor is right on the edge... anyone going to step up and push him over the top (or back down to the pack)? Maybe I'll update this again later if there are more votes and I'm not feeling all lazy.....

It's amazing to me that Blyleven has avoided the Hall for this long. It's about time he got in.

You know what? I'm gonna add Molitor to my list. I was keeping him off because he was mainly a DH, and part of me thinks it's wrong to have someone in the hall for playing that abomination of a 'position'.
OTOH, Paul didn't make out the lineup card. His managers did. He probably would have been an adequate first baseman for most of his career if he'd had the opportunity. I shouldn't penalize Molitor for having been born into his era and for having played in the AL for managers who chose to use him that way. He couldn't do anything about that. What he could do, was be a damn fine hitter for a long time. So, Molitor in, too. |

Andre Dawson and Dave Parker? May I ask why they are deserving, in your opinion?

My votes:
Bert Blyleven - sixto and dougaiton stated his case very nicely, though I doubt very seriously he'll ever be enshrined. Ryne Sandberg - I'm a longtime Sandberg homer. I think he'll get in this year, certainly within his first five years on the ballot - and he deserves to. Dale Murphy - Has two MVP's but no transcendant achievement to define his career. Two MVP's and a transcendant achievement haven't been enough for Roger Maris, so should Murphy be in? Probably not. But even though he played in relative anonymity in pre-Cox/Mazzone Atlanta he was, like sixto noted, feared - and with good reason, so I'll kick in with Murph here too.

I don't think Dale Murphy belongs in the Hall. He was a very good player for a few years, but many others have been that without going to the Hall for it.
Blyleven is the most deserving, IMO. Eckersley belongs in there. Not only was he a phenomenal closer, he's really the first of his kind. Plus, he was a successful starter before that. I've always liked Molitor and think he should be in. Andre Dawson is borderline. I think I'd put him in, but I don't know if he'll get in this year. Juan Samuel? As a Met fan, that name brings back bad memories. Ryne Sandberg was a great second baseman, and I think he definitely deserves the Hall. Mattingly, Hernandez, Trammell, Rice: Not quite enough for me.

We've currently got 19 votes (and a late buffalo waffle)....
Bert Blyleven 16/19 84% Paul Molitor 14/19 74% Dennis Eckersley 8/19 42% Alan Trammell 7/19 37% Ryne Sandberg 7/19 37% Rich Gossage 5/19 26% Jim Rice 5/19 26% Dale Murphy 4/19 21% Ted Simmons (write-in) 3/19 16% Bruce Sutter 3/19 16% Andre Dawson 2/19 11% Juan Samuel 1/19 5% Steve Garvey 1/19 5% Tommy John 1/19 5% Don Mattingly 1/19 5% Luis Tiant 1/19 5% Dave Parker 1/19 5% Lee Smith 1/19 5% Molitor just can't quite make it over the hump..... Also, look at all the worthy guys we'd be on the verge of bumping from the ballot. I'm not necessarily saying Garvey, Mattingly, Tommy John or Lee Smith should be in the Hall, but shouldn't they at least stay on the ballot? Maybe I'll update this again later if there are more votes and I'm not feeling all lazy..... [/B][/QUOTE]

Thank you Prfo and LL
I knew OF Simmons but never knew how great he truly was. Learn something everyday. But, since I, a baseball fan, never heard of him...maybe that's why no one voted?
