NHL Recap Feburary 2024

Eastern

Tampa Bay Lightning - 35-24-5, 1st in East
The coaching change has been effective for Tampa. Horcoff has taken the the team to 9-1-1 in his first 11 games in charge. Despite injuries to players like Cirelli and Hagel, Kucherov and Stamkos have been leading the team to prepare for a strong postseason run.

Florida Panthers - 31-27-3, 11th in East
With Matthew Tkachuck and Sam Bennett both nursing long term injuries, the Panthers have fallen off from their early season success. Bobrovsky and Knight are an excellent goaltending tandem, but there's only so much they can do when skaters aren't scoring.

Pittsburgh Penguins - 34-18-7, 2nd in East
As Crosby looks towards the end of his career, he and Letang seem determined to get another cup before he retires. 4th in Goals/Game and 10th in Goals Against/Game, the veterans aren't showing signs of being ready to finish up just yet.

Western
Winnipeg Jets - 31-25-4, 8th in West
Moving from just outside the playoff places to in a wildcard space, Winnipeg will be looking to close out the season strong and make a playoff appearence. Their job isn't done yet though, with Dallas and Colorado both within striking distance if they stumble.

Vancouver Canucks - 33-25-5, 7th in West
The Canucks seem to be doing everything right at the moment. Fans will be delighted with the Pettersson extension, as he, Hughes and Miller are all having career seasons.
Vancouver is excited to see the first playoff games in Rogers Arena in almost a decade. Demko has also been a super solid netminder as they are a top 10 team for goals allowed.

Edmonton Oilers - 39-16-4, 1st in West
McDavid was clearly frustrated with Kaprizov getting close to him in total points this season. Finally getting some goaltending support this season, McDavid may be on the brink of proving his doubters wrong as they prepare for another playoff run to get him the cup he's been lacking for years.

Calgary Recap March/April 2024

W 7-3 @ PIT (Mar 2)
Adam Boqvist comes into the lineup and immediately makes his presence known, getting his first Flames goal and assist both in the first period. With 40 shots of their own, and 2/4 on powerplay attempts, Calgary is the team overpowering their opposition for a change.

W 6-4 vs SEA (Mar 4)
Another three point game for Kadri as he proves how valuable he is to this team. Adam Ruzicka and Jakob Pelletier both struggle defensively, but a strong Markstrom performance is more than enough to keep the winning going.

L 5-1 @ TBL (Mar 7)
Despite the opening goal from Moser, the Flames respond with 5 unanswered goals, as usual stars such as Huberdeau and Kadri almost go missing. Horcoff proves his side are real contenders as he moves his winning streak to 5.

W 5-2 @ FLA (Mar 9)
After a rough start to their trip to the US Southeast, Calgary bounce back with another win. Chris Tanev gets himself a suprising multi-point game, including his first goal of the season. Hanifin also scores on the powerplay, something that the Flames were hoping to see more of in the dying games of the season.

L 11-0 @ CAR (Mar 10)
The conclusion to this road trip ends in a horrific game for Calgary. The team was completely outplayed in every sense of the word, allowing 42 shots, creating 18 and looking like an absolute disaster.

W 3-1 vs COL (Mar 12)
Calgary bounce back again, creating 45 shots and scoring 3 goals. The Avalanche stumble again, as their remote playoff chance begins to fade. With 12 takeaways, Calgary did an exellent job of punishing Colorado for their mistakes.

Breaking News
After being involved in yet another off-ice incident, Nazem Kadri's effect on team morale is being seriously considered. While a big contract to move, Calgary may look to cut ties in the offseason if they can get something in response.

W 4-1 vs VGK (Mar 14)
Calgary put aside their internal fighting to get a suprising win against Presidents Trophy hopeful Vegas. With Blake Coleman being involved in a goal and two assists, he took the first star of the night, but it was an excellent all around team effort.

L 3-2 vs MON (Mar 16)
Sam Montembeault was too good for the Flames, making 38 saves on 40 shots. With Markstrom unable to match his performance against 26 shots, Montreal left Alberta with full points.

Breaking
Looking likely to miss the playoffs, Dallas has made the decision to bring an end to Peter DeBoer's time as head coach. Assistant coach Alain Nasreddine will take over for the rest of this season and next year. Nasreddine has previously had a short stint as interim head coach for the Devils, but this is his first permenant appointment.

L 4-0 vs WAS (Mar 18)
Another case of goalies being too tough for the Flames. Kuemper saves all 30 shots he faces, as the rebuilding Capitals manage to pick up a win on the road. The blue line made plenty of hits, but without offensive chances it came to nothing. Sharangovich is breifly out with a hand contousion.

Transaction
Sharangovich to IR
Poirier to NHL

L 5-2 @ VAN (Mar 23)
After getting a win against a major rival, Vancouver further cement their spot as a playoff team. Petterson and Boeser star as always, with Dakota Joshua also having a memorable performance.

SOL 5-4 vs BUF (Mar 24)
Back to back games and back to back losses, Calgary fail to hold a 3-0 lead and has to settle for a single point. Poirier makes his NHL debut, picks up a single point and generally impresses.

Breaking
After large backlash over the Bowman hiring, and reported clashes with ownership, the Leafs announce he will not be continuing as GM. President Brendan Shanahan has made the decision to act as General Manager himself for the forseaable future.

W 4-2 @ CHI (Mar 26)
Helping his team to an early lead, Trey Fix-Wolansky further proves Columbus' mistake in waiving him, setting up two goals against the Blackhawks. Picking up his 33rd point tonight, MacKenzie Weegar remains an outside chance to break his best season, being only 11 points off it.

L 6-3 @ STL (Mar 28)
Another rough 3rd period for Calgary as the Blues turn a 2-2 game into a 6-3 final score. While a loss to a genuine contender is not suprising, many haped it would be a lot closer than this.

W 7-6 vs LAK (Mar 30)
Another strong night for Weegar, picking up 3 points, and needing 8 points from the last 10 games to get a season best. Kadri gave the puck away on a number of occasions, errors that those who want him gone are pointing to.

W 6-4 vs ANA (Apr 2)
A win against the ducks gets the final month of the season underway. Mangiapane shows off with another multi point night, as the two teams with little left to play for go head to head.

Breaking
After struggling this season, Spencer Carbery of the Capitals is the next head coach onto the coaching carousel. Bylsma, who took the Penguins to the Stanley Cup in 2009, and has been coaching the Coachella Valley Firebirds of the AHL, will be hoping to do the same in Washingotn.

L 3-1 @ WPG (Apr 4)
Another loss at the backend of the season. Winnipeg moves to 90 points and should be fairly confident of a playoff berth this season. Nazem Kadri scores the only goal, briefly quieting those calling for Calgary to seperate with him.

W 6-3 vs EDM (Apr 6)
While not in the playoffs themselves, Flames fans get the joy of putting a major dent in the Oilers' president trophy's chances. Another Kadri goal is scored as he tries to prove why Calgary need him.

L 5-3 @ SJS (Apr 9)
The Sharks prove too much as the Flames have a final road trip to LA. Markstrom struggles again against 40 shots.

L 4-0 @ LAK (Apr 11)
The first game of a doubleheader and the Flames are shutout, as LA continues their president's trophy bid.

L 5-2 @ ANA (Apr 12)
The Flames lose their final game in the US, though Boqvist and Weegar both pick up assists.

W 2-1 vs ARI (Apr 14)
While there isn't much fun in the dying games of a losing season, the Flames do get the fun of being the straw that broke the camels back, as after this game Arizona makes a major announcement.

Breaking
After being one of the worst teams in the league all year, Arizona coach Andre Tourigny finally gets the boot. He will be replaced by first time coach Brooks Orpik.

Additionally the Colorado Avalance announce they will part ways with Jared Bednay, Chris Lamoriello will take over behind the bench for the next few years.

L 4-2 @ VAN (Apr 16)
Markstrom struggles against his former team, as the Flames lose their final road game. Elias Petterson scores twice, including the game winning goal.

W 11-0 vs SJS (Apr 18)
A rough season finishes on a high note, as the Flames absolutely blow away the Sharks.

(I won't do stats now as I'll do a season recap after the cup final)

2024 Season Recap/Playoff Preview:

East

Carolina Hurricanes [1] vs New York Rangers [WC2]
The Canes come into this playoff series as the best team in the Eastern Conference. 7th in Goals and 6th in Goals against, Carolina is strong both offensively and defensively, but not elite in either. Offensively they rely heavily on Sebastian Aho, who finished the regular season with 56 goals and 50 assists. Yet to re-sign in Carolina, Tony DeAngelo has also had a strong season this year, with 18 goals and 55 assists he often set up huge chances for Aho and others to score. DeAngelo's playmaking also led the Canes to have the second best powerplay in the league. Their goaltending situation is solid. Fredrik Andersen comes into the postseasons with a .916 SV and a 2.86 GAA. Recording a save percentage over .950 in each of his last three starts, Andersen is in good form.

Facing them will be the Rangers, who finished the season 10th in goals against. With tough guys like Blake Wheeler and Jacob Trouba, the Rangers blue line is more than capable of providing plenty of hits, finishing 6th in hits. Mika Zibanejad missed time this season due to a broken hamate bone, but got 70 points in the 61 games he did play. Shesterkin had a slight down year by his standards, but was still great this year. He comes into the postseason in shaky form, so the Rangers will need him to get hot if they want to get the upset. The big star of New York however is Hart finalist Artemi Panarin. Finally breaking 100 points in a season, Panerin will want to continue his offensive form into the playoffs.

Pittsburgh Penguins [2] vs Columbus Blue Jackets [3]
The Penguins goal is simple, get Crosby another cup before he retires. With one of the oldest rosters in the league, this window is closing fast, so will need a deep run this year. Crosby has had another excellent season, scoring 36 goals and 44 assists in his 81 games played. The Penguins were a high scoring team, finishing at 6th in total goals scored, however they do have a notable weakness. Finishing 31st in penalty killing, a strong powerplay will be the key to ending the Penguins season. Tristan Jarry is injured for the first round, though would likely be back for the second. Their other options in net are both weak, having to decide between Alex Nedeljkovic (who had a .890 SV% and 3.75 GAA in his 19 games) or Mafnus Hellberg, who, while performing well in them, has only played 2 NHL games this season. Neither come into the series particularly hot.

Columbus has a strong chance at an upset, as one of the best scoring teams in the NHL (finshing 3rd in goals). Their top 5 powerplay should also give Pittsburgh worries. They will be looking to Johnny Gaudreau (who's had a bounceback year after a quieter 22/23 season), and Patrik Laine (both 90 point players) to ensure that Pittsburgh don't get a chance to find the answer to their goalie issue. Calder finalist Adam Fantilli has also shown a lot of promise in his first NHL season, finshing with 27G, 34A in his 81 games played. While not elite, Spencer Martin has had a strong season and comes into the playoffs hot, which may be enough with support from his forwards.

Ottawa Senators [1] vs New Jersey Devils [WC1]
After many dissapointing years in Ottawa, the playoffs are finally here. 4th in goals and 5th in shots, Ottawa are more than capable of punishing defensive mistakes to overpower a goalie. Thomas Chabot comes into the postseason off a very strong april, and will be looking to take control and slingshot many dangerous Ottawa Attacks. 22 year old Tim Stutzle led the team in goals this season, and will be looking to make his case as the face of the Senators with a strong playoff performance. The Senators also have the benefit of coming into this series with a clean bill of health. One of the big issues for them will be playing their first 3 games without captain Brady Tkachuck, who will have to serve a suspension until game 4. Korpisalo does not come into this season in promising form, but if the scoring is flowing he may be able to make enough stops to win it for them.

They will be up against one of the toughest defensive teams in the NHL. Finshing 2nd in goals allowed, New Jersey will look to keep the scoring threats from Ottawa at bay. New Jersey will have to be without forward Tyler Toffoli for a large chunk of the playoffs (but may be back if they can achieve a deep run). With plenty of young stars such as Jack Hughes (76 GP, 52G, 49A) and Dawson Mercer (81 GP, 17G, 41A), this Devils team should be more than prepared for many deep playoff runs in the near future. Their standout this season however is Vezina finalist Akira Schmid. After a couple of seasons bouncing between the AHL and NHL, Schmid started off the 23/24 season off strong from Vitek Vanecek. Coming into the playoffs in hot form, he will be looking to prove himself as the next franchise goalie.

Buffalo Sabres [2] vs Tampa Bay Lightning [3]
Breaking 13 years of playoff drought, the Sabres will be looking to prove they can do more than provide their fans misery and make a solid cup run. One of the oldest teams never to win a cup, they will be hoping to finally bring the cup to Buffalo. 4th in shots per game and tied 7th in goals, Buffalo is another strong offensive team. While Rasmus Dahlin had a down year from usual, he will be hoping to bounce back for the playoffs. Jeff Skinner and Tage Thompson (78 GP, 37G, 38A) will both be offensive threats that will challenge postseason goaltending. While Eric Comrie and Devon Levi pretty much evenly split goaltending duties this season, the hotter form of Comrie should give him the edge for the postseason.

New coach Shawn Horcoff will be desperate to show that he can match his predecessor's achievements. For the Lightning it's business as usual. Maybe not as high in the standings as they'd like but it's the familiar stars of Stamkos, Kucherov and Cirelli, the top 5 scoring team in the NHL will be looking for yet another cup run. While they aren't as strong defensively, They will be hoping that Andrei Vasilevskiy can put together another strong postseason showing on their 7th straight playoff appearence.

West
LA Kings [1] vs Winnipeg Jets [WC2]
The LA Kings were the victors in a very tight President's Trophy race. 1st in goals scored and 3rd in goals allowed, LA are one of the easy favourites to go all the way. Adrian Kempe had a career best season (81 GP, 44G, 55 A) and alongside young talent like Pierre-Luc Dubois (70 GP, 32G, 42A), Quinton Byfield (82 GP, 33G, 40A) and Calder finalist Brandt Clarke. (74 GP, 26G, 41A), this core has what it takes to be one of the NHL powerhouses for years to come. Pheonix Copley (63 GP, .906 SV%, 2.88 GAA) comes into the playoffs in hot form.

Barely sneaking into the playoffs, the Jets have an uphill battle against them. 12th in goals and 24th in goals against, Winnipeg are pretty big underdogs in this series. Mark Scheiflele (78 GP, 38G, 46A) has once again been a standout performer for the Jets, and Cole Perfetti (74 GP, 27 G, 32 A) continues to look promising early into his career. This will be Hellebuyck's 5th postseason in net for the Jets, and while not particularly hot, he will be relying on his experience to keep them in the game.

Edmonton Oilers [2] vs Vegas Golden Knights [3]

Two generational players go up against the defending champions. With Draisaitl and McDavid both being Hart finalists, the Oilers will be looking to finally get them across the line. After winning another Art Ross and Maurice Richard, McDavid will be desperate to finally win his team a cup. The depth in Edmonton is a lot more sparse, but players like Zach Hyman (81 GP, 31 G, 53 A) and Evan Bouchard (82 GP, 22 G, 53 A) should be able to play the support roles needed alongside the best player in the league. Stuart Skinner comes into this in hot form.

This Vegas side isn't the absolute dominant top line we've seen in years past. With Pietrangelo injured for the beginning of the series, and only coming in at 10 in goals scored, Vegas will need to use their strength and physicality to shut down Edmonton's stars. They do have some hope however. Jack Eichel (43 GP, 28 G, 26 A) while missing large portions of the season due to injury, comes into the series off strong games in full health. If players like Eichel can stay healthy they should be able to make this a competitive series. Logan Thompson (68 GP, .901 SV%, 2.82 GAA) has taken the starting goalie role and also comes in hot.

St. Louis Blues [1] vs Vancouver Canucks [WC1]
St Louis will be dissapointed not to come away with the President's Trophy this year after a rough patch towards the end of the season. An strong defensive team (5th in goals allowed), will be relying that to make up for a not being a top 10 scoring team. Elias Lindholm proved a strong deadline acquisition, being a reliable defensive option and physical presence. In 2019 a rookie goalie took the Blues all the way to a cup. With another young goalie in Joel Hofer starting between the pipes this time, can they repeat the magic yet again.

For Vancouver, making it here is already a winning season. The core has taken them to the playoffs, and Vancouver is excited to see another series at Rogers Arena. Elias Petterson has signed an extension to stay until 2027. Despite being one of the worst scoring teams in the postseason (at 15th), Vancouver can be slightly reassured that part of that is due to key scorers spending time on IR. Thatcher Demko made some memorable starts last time he was in the playoffs, and in hot form, will be hoping he can recreate his bubble performance.

Nashville Predators [2] vs Minnesota Wild [3]
The final matchup for this first round and it should be a heavily defense focused duel between the best defensive side in the league up against Minnesota who are also better defensively. Without a player over 80 points, Nashville will be looking up and down the lineup to find scoring contributions. Their biggest strength is their blue line with Roman Josi being one of the top defensemen in the league for a few years and Tyson Barrie being a Norris finalist. In goal is Vezina finalist Juuse Saros, so scoring should be a tough challenge for any opponents.

Kaprizov will be Minnesota's main chance to get through this defense. Coming off another 100 point season (82 GP, 42 G, 60 A) he will need to find ways to get the puck past Saros. Matt Boldy (82 GP, 32 G, 49 A) has also impressed in his third NHL season. Minnesota are responding to Nashville's Vezina finalist in goal with one of their own. Marc-Andre Fleury has had a fantastic season this year. Expect few goals as two of the best goalies go up against each other for a playoff series.

Let's go I'm here for the Spencer Martin led Blue Jackets upset.

What was Pettersson's extension for?

Savvy move picking up Cuylle for Rooney. Too bad you couldn't get as much for Lindholm as IRL. Picks are expensive in this game though so good job getting a first at least.

Man, weird GM and Coach firings abound. Gotta love the new GM getting let go before the end of the season. Sounds like FHM alright lol. But I guess the Horcoff one worked out for Tampa so what do I know? Good job making a storyline for it at least.

A combination of picks being expensive and the AI not great with dealing with what i was trying to do, which was basically using cap space as one of the assets i'm trading. Totally normal thing to fire your HC mid season while you're in a playoff spot right?

Petterson was 3 years, 11,030,000 AAV

2024 Playoffs Round 1

2024 Season Recap/Playoff Preview:

East

Carolina Hurricanes [1] vs New York Rangers [WC2]
NYR 1 @ CAR 4
NYR 2 @ CAR 5

NYR 1 vs CAR 7
NYR 2 vs CAR 6

The Hurricanes' scoring proves too strong for Shesterkin. Sebastian Aho (5 G, 5 A), Andrei Svechnikov (4 G, 5 A) and Martin Necas (6 A) starred through this series, as the Canes' kept Andersen from having to face more than 29 shots in any of the games. With plenty of time to rest, Carolina have been able to watch the Penguins/Columbus series as they prepare for their next opponent.

Carolina wins 4-0

Pittsburgh Penguins [2] vs Columbus Blue Jackets [3]
CBJ 3 @ PIT 7
CBJ 6 @ PIT 4

CBJ 7 vs PIT 3
CBJ 3 vs PIT 7

CBJ 1 @ PIT 5

CBJ 4 vs PIT 4

Spencer Martin struggled in this series. Finishing his postseason with a .881 SV%, his hot form proved innefective against Pittsburgh. Patrick Laine (3 G, 5 A) was the main talking point for Columbus as he played his first postseason series with the Blue Jackets. On the Penguins side, Bryan Rust (4 G, 5 A), Kris Letang (0 G, 6 A) and especially Jake Guentzel (4 G, 6 A) were the stars as Alex Nedeljkovic stepped up as the netminder. Coach Mike Sullivan has a big decision to make with Tristan Jarry back off IR, continue the hot hand of Nedeljkovic or let the more experienced goaltender face Aho and the Hurricanes.

Pittsburgh wins 4-2

Ottawa Senators [1] vs New Jersey Devils [WC1]
NJD 2 @ OTT 5
NJD 4 @ OTT 1

NJD 3 vs OTT 4
NJD 5 vs OTT 1

NJD 2 @ OTT 5

NJD 3 vs OTT 7

Akira Schmid puts in a strong performance for New Jersey in his first playoff series. However with a number of games facing 40-50 shots, Schmid couldn't do it all himself and with Jack Hughes (2 G, 5 A) and Timo Meier (2 G, 4 A) being the only noteworthy skaters, the Devils could not get their scoring to keep up with the Sens. Vladimir Tarasenko proved a good offseason aquisition for the Senators, with 2 G 6 A, and a 5 point night in game 6. With less work to do, Korpisalo was easily the better of the two goalies.

Ottawa wins 4-2

Buffalo Sabres [2] vs Tampa Bay Lightning [3]
TBL 2 @ BUF 8
TBL 2 @ BUF 5

TBL 6 vs BUF 3
TBL 1 vs BUF 4

TBL 3 @ BUF 7

Shawn Horcoff struggles to get his team firing in his first playoff trip. Buffalo's shots managed to quickly overpower Vasilevsky as he concedes 4 goals from his first 16 shots faced in the series. Horcoff quickly pulls him, as Jonas Johansson became the starter for the rest of the series. While Johansson performed well, not having contribution from a former Veznia winner is a huge blow to any team. Bradon Hagel became an unlikely hero for Tampa, with a 3 point night in their game 3 win, and 8 total playoff points. With 5 goals and 4 assists, Jeff Skinner was a key piece for Buffalo in this win. Tage Thompson also achieved 5 goals in the series, as we look forward to two high scoring teams facing off in the second round.

Buffalo wins 4-1

West

LA Kings [1] vs Winnipeg Jets [WC2]
WPG 6 @ LAK 8
WPG 4 @ LAK 1

WPG 3 vs LAK 4
WPG 6 vs LAK 3

WPG 5 @ LAK 8

WPG 1 vs LAK 3

With a game 1 hat-trick, Nikolaj Ehlers showed early form for Winnepeg. However as the series went on, LA proved they were too good for the Jets. Kyle Connor (5 G, 7 A) was also impressive, but with LA regularly making 35-40 shot nights, Hellebuyck was not able to keep enough pucks out to keep them in the series.
Adrian Kempe's 10 assists, and Kevin Fiala's 6 goals were backed up a couple of strong nights out from Pheonix Copley (and a couple of more forgettable ones). The kings deal with the President's Trophy curse in round 1 and prepare for a tough round 2 fight.
LA wins 4-2

Edmonton Oilers [2] vs Vegas Golden Knights [3]
VGK 2 @ EDM 8
VGK 4 @ EDM 5

VGK 1 vs EDM 4
VGK 3 vs EDM 2

VGK 2 @ EDM 5

Other than Jack Eichel (6 G, 1 A) nobody could really get scoring for Vegas. Logan Thompson had almost 0 support, facing 35-45 shots every single night, and pulling off a 38 save game 4 to keep his side from being swept, and for the 3rd time in 5 years the defending cup champion is knocked out in the 1st round. Suprisingly for Edmonton, when you have two Hart candidates and a strong goalie performance, you win playoff series. While kept busy most nights, Stuart Skinner kept Vegas from being able to really claw their way into the series. Connor McDavid continues his scoring form, putting 5 goals past Vegas.

Edmonton wins 3-1

In a tense, closely fought series, Berube is unable to recreate another magic cup run. With no player able to get 10 points in the 7 games, and struggling in overtime, Hofer's .914 SV% was not enough to keep Vancouver at bay. Deadline day deal Elias Lindholm scored 5 goals, sending a message for interested teams in the offseason. While Pettersson (2 G, 3 A) and Hughes (2 G, 2A) may not have led by example, suprinsing stars such as Filip Hronek (3 G, 5 A) and Connor Garland (5 G, 2 A) stepped up in their place, as some excellent nights from Thatcher Demko on the road sealed the deal in the only upset this first round.

MIN 5 @ NSH 2

MIN 2 @ NSH 4

Juse Saros was too good for the Wild. Keeping all players under a point-per-game, the Wild quickly demonstrated that they were outmatched in this series. While nobody else truely starred for Nashville, 5 players finished the series with 5 or more points, including both first defensive pairing players Tyson Barrie and Roman Josi. With a relatively quick end to their series, that may be an advantage, as they face a Canucks team who had to play all 7 games.

Nashville wins 4-1

Round 2 Recap:

Hurricanes [1] vs Penguins [2]
PIT 2 @ CAR 4
PIT 4 @ CAR 3

PIT 8 vs CAR 3
PIT 1 vs CAR 2 (2 OT)

PIT 0 @ CAR 1

PIT 0 vs CAR 5

The Penguins make the switch to Jarry during the second period of game 1, down 4-1. He performs the rest of the season, keeping Carolina two 3 goals or less from games 2-5. Bryan Rust once again is one of the best performers for the Penguins, with 3 G, 6 A. Guentzel also had a super impressive game 3, with 5 assists in their 8-3 win. The other stars remained relatively quiet including Crosby (3 G, 1 A) and Malkin (1 G, 0 A).

Aho (5 G, 1 A) and Svechnikov (3 G, 4 A) both are keeping up their good form. Carolina show their faith in Frederik Andersen, keeping them even after the 8-3 game (and 2-1 series defecit). From here, he repayed the faith in full, allowing only 1 goal in the last 3 games (including 2 periods of OT). While quiet in the first 3 games, Jesperi Kotkaniemi's goal and two assists in the last two games helped them hold onto the series lead. This is Carolina's second straight trip to the Eastern Conference Final, being swept by Florida last year.

Carolina wins 4-2

Senators [1] vs Sabres [2]
BUF 2 @ OTT 9
BUF 8 @ OTT 6

BUF 5 vs OTT 1
BUF 9 vs OTT 3

BUF 7 @ OTT 4

Game one went exactly how Ottawa wanted. Claude Giroux had 4 assists, Batherson 2 goals. Buffalo goalie Eric Comrie looke like he had no answers. Sens fans flocked to Canadian Tire Centre for game 2, hoping to see their team continue there run. From here, Stutzle only had one goal in the last 4 games, Giroux only one point. Vladimir Tarasenko did his best to keep his team alive, with 5 G 4 A in the 5 games.

Sabres goaltender Eric Comrie made up for his tough starts on the road with excellent outings in front of fans. Tage Thompson takes his game to a new leve, with 6 G 5 A across the series. Jack Quinn also proves he belongs on an NHL roster with 6 G 4 A. Jeff Skinner was kept more quiet, with 2 G 4 A, but the overall offensive outburst more than made up for this. This will be Buffalo's first trip to the ECF in almost 20 years, last reaching it in the 06/07 season.

Buffalo wins 4-1

Kings [1] vs Oilers [2]

EDM 4 @ LAK 7
EDM 2 @ LAK 7

EDM 3 vs LAK 8
EDM 6 vs LAK 2

EDM 4 @ LAK 5

With the lower lines getting into a slump, McDavid and Draisaitl are unable to drag Edmonton into the Western Conference Final. Stuart Skinner looked a lot weaker against LA, only finishing the game in 2 of his starts. McDavid (3 G, 6 A) and Draisaitl (4 G, 4 A) both had respectable games, but respectable isn't enough when you're getting no help from the rest of the team. Edmonton has themselves another dissapointing playoffs.

The Kings will take their red hot form into the Western Conference Final. With Adrian Kempe (5 G, 5 A) up to 23 postseason points, and Fiala (4G 5A) close behind with 18. LA is dominating the Conn Smythe odds at the moment. Pheonix Copley put together 4 fantastic games of hockey, only having to be relieved during game 4. One of the hottest goalies left inthe playoffs, Copley will be hoping to lead his team back to a cup.

Nashville [2] vs Canucks [WC1]
VAN 2 @ NSH 3 (2 OT)
VAN 2 @ NSH 6

VAN 4 vs NSH 1
VAN 4 vs NSH 3 (2 OT)

VAN 3 @ NSH 6

VAN 5 vs NSH 2

VAN 4 @ NSH 3

While Nashville had a strong start at home, they were unable to win when it mattered most. With Tyson Barrie only getting 2 points all season, and Josi's 2 G 4 A, the slowdown of the blue line's scoring didnot help them. Thomas Novak (2 G 6 A) also starred for Nashville in this matchup. Juuse Saros started the series out strong, with a 55 save win in the opener. He struggled from here, as vancouver managed to come back from being 2-0 down.

After falling down 2-0 in the series, Vancouver continue their underdog run, taking the series in 7 games. Anthony Beauvillier has been the star of the forwards for Vancouver, with 4 goals and 5 assists. Filip Hronek has also been strong, with goal and 5 assists. The real hero for Vancouver was Thatcher Demko, who started and finished all 7 games for Vancouver and has been a brick wall in goal. This will be Vancouver's first Conference Final since 2011.

Carolina Hurricanes (50-29-3) vs Buffalo Sabres (46-30-6)
Los Angeles Kings (52-24-6) vs Vancouver Canucks (45-31-6)

Let's go Vancouver! Maybe we get a '72 expansion teams final with the Canucks and Sabres.

Reasonable contract for Petey. I notice sometimes high end players (like Nylander) take unrealistically cheap deals.

Oooh seeing the two oldest cup-less teams go at it for their first would certainly be a lot of fun! but yeah the game's AI definitely struggles at times with valuing big moves in general, being trades or contracts.

Conference Finals
Carolina Hurricanes (50-29-3) vs Buffalo Sabres (46-30-6)

Game 1 - PNC Arena, Raleigh - BUF 2 @ CAR 3 (OT)
A tightly fought game 1 needs more than 3 periods to seperate the two teams. Sebastian Aho gets his 9th goal of the postseason in the 9th minute of OT, to take the series opener. Andersen continues his strong postseason, dealing with Buffalo's chances where needed. Aho finished the game with 1 G and 1 A and was the star for Carolina. Carolina leads 1-0

Game 2 - PNC Arena, Raleigh - BUF 1 @ CAR 7
After a close game one, Carolina were dominant in game 2. Kotkaniemi scored in the first 5 minutes of the game, and it went downhill for Buffalo from there. Kotkaniemi (2 G 0 A) ended the game with multiple goals, and Brady Skjei and Seth Jarvis both ended with 3 assists. Peyton Krebs was the sole goalscorer for Buffalo, who now have to figure out how to turn things around at hom.

Carolina leads 2-0

Game 3 - KeyBank Center, Buffalo - CAR 3 @ BUF 1
Despite Dylan Cozens opening the scoring for night, Carolina even the game within a minute and score two in the 3rd to secure the game. Comrie makes 37 saves for Buffalo, but without scoring support is unable to steal them the game. For Carolina, Seth Jarvis starred, picking up a goal and an assist. Kotkaniemi got the empty net goal at the end of the game to put it out of reach for Buffalo. Game 4 becomes must win for the Sabres to keep their run going.

Carolina leads 3-0

Game 4 - KeyBank Center, Buffalo - CAR 3 @ BUF 7
Buffalo finally find a way past Andersen. With 43 shots, the Sabres were relentless in their scoring as they desperately tried to avoid the sweep. While Sebastian Aho opened the scoring, the Canes next goal did notcome until they were already trailing by 3 goals. Casey Middlestadt scores twice and has an assist, after failing to register a point since game 5 of the first round. Peyton Krebs (0 G, 2 A), Zach Benson (1 G, 2 A) and Zemgus Girgensons (0 G, 2 A) all have multi point nights. Carolina now travels back to Raleigh aiming to close out the series at home.

Carolina leads 3-1

Game 5 - PNC Arena, Raleigh - BUF 3 @ CAR 4 (OT)
Heatbreak for Buffalo as their season ends in overtime. While they looked like they might extend the season after Zemgus Girgensons put the Sabres up 3-1 in the second period. Michael Bunting's 1 G, 2 A came through for Carolina, scoring the game tying goal, before setting up Brendan Lemieux for the OT winner. This will be the first time Carolina has played in the Stanley Cup Final since they won the cup in 06/07.

Carolina wins 4-1

Los Angeles Kings (52-24-6) vs Vancouver Canucks (45-31-6)

Game 1 - Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles - VAN 5 @ LAK 6 (OT)
An early flurry of goals from both sides, with a 3-3 first period. Things slowed down with it at 5-5 in the second intermission and scoreless in the third. Blake Lizotte was the hero of the game, scoring 7:30 into overtime. JT Miller (2 G, 1 A) put in a strong game for Vancouver, as did Christian Wolanin (0 G, 2 A). Victor Aridsson (1 G, 1 A) and Brandt Clarke (1G 1A) all had strong nights for the victorious Kings.

Los Angeles leads 1-0

Game 2 - Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles - VAN 6 @ LAK 3
Vancouver even the series on the road in another high scoring affair. Hughes and Boeser start the game strong with first period goals and the Canucks don't look back. A four assist night for Beauvillier continues his strong run of form from the 2nd round. Byfield and Anderson-Dolin get the game down to a 1 goal lead, but two insurance goals in the late 2nd period mean the Canucks travel back home with the series level.

Tied 1-1

Game 3 - Rogers Arena, Vancouver - LAK 1 @ VAN 5
JT Miller (2A 1A) and Aiden McDonough (0 G, 3 A) help Vancouver to a series lead at home. Thatcher Demko has himself a 34 save night, and Rogers Arena is filled with hope as the Canucks continue their deepest run since 2011. Mikheyev (2 G) and Garland (3 A) also impress as the Canucks continue their strong scoring form.

Vancouver leads 2-1

Game 4 - Rogers Arena, Vancouver - LAK 6 @ VAN 5 (OT)
Vancouver play yet another overtime game this postseason. Despite Vancouver recording 49 shots this game, Pheonix Copley does enough to keep his side competitve, Multi goal nights from Garland (2 G, 0 A), Pierre-Luc Dubois (2 G, 0 A) and Victor Arvidsson (2 G, 0 A) lead to a very enjoyable game for neutr stal observers. With game being within a goal for all but 3 minutes in regulation, this game could have gone either way. Kevin Fiala scores in the 4th minute of overtime to close out the game as the series heads back down across the border.

Series Tied 2-2

Game 5 - Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles - VAN 1 @ LAK 4
Pheonix Copley was too good for Vancouver to take back the series lead. Making 38 saves and only allowing the one goal, LA's scoring remained strong, as they move within a game of the cup final. Blake Lizotte (0 G, 2 A) and Carl Grundstrom (0 G, 2 A) both had multi point nights, as Victor Arvidsson and Pierre-Luc Dubois, both score their 10th goals this postseason.

Los Angeles leads 3-2

Game 6 - Rogers Arena, Vancouver - LAK 2 @ VAN 6
A 46 shot night for Vancover leads them to a winner takes all game. Vasili Podkolzin starred for Vancouver, with a 2 goal night. Other stars for Vancouver include Sam Lafferty (0 G, 2 A) and Dakota Joshua (0 G, 2 A). On a more positive note for LA, Adrian Kempe joins the 10 goal postseason club for the Kings.

Series Tied 3-3

Game 7 - Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles - VAN 3 @ LAK 1
Vancouver take their 3rd game 7 of the playoffs. With a +10 total shot differential, the Canucks never trailed, and led from the first period onwards. Ilya Mikheyev had a fantastic game, getting two hits and two assists. Quinn Hughes also picked up two assists in this game, with the other goals coming from Hoglander and Hronek. The President's Trophy claims another victim, with no team winning both the President's Trophy and Stanley Cup since 2012/13. JT Miller and Filip Hronek lead the team with 20 postseason points. Petterson makes up for being somewhat absent earlier in the playoffs, with 1 G 5 A this series, taking his postseason total to 14 points.

Vancouver win 4-3

2024 Stanley Cup Final

Stanley Cup Final
Carolina Hurricanes (50-29-3) vs Vancouver Canucks (45-31-6)

Game 1 - PNC Arena, Raleigh - VAN 8 @ CAR 3

A statement win on the road, as Vancouver takes the series opener. Despite two goals late in the 1st period, Anthony Beauvillier continues his career best season, with 2 G 2 A. A couple of goals from Kotkaniemi was the main talking point for Carolina fans. Tony DeAngelo struggled and Jaccob Slavin both struggled defensively, which played a key part in the Canucks being able to record 39 shots.

Vancouver leads 1-0

Game 2 - PNC Arena, Raleigh - VAN 3 @ CAR 5

Carolina take game 2 in front of their fans. Despite trailing 3-2 at the end of the 2nd period, Sebastian Aho's 14th postseason goal tied the game for Carolina before Brady Skjei and Michael Bunting gave them two goals to take the win. Vancouver remained creating a lot of shots, with 30, but Fredrik Andersen proved a lot more capable of dealing with them. Andrei Svechnikov showed a more defensive aspect to his game, with 2 big hits against the Canucks.

Series tied 1-1

Game 3 - Rogers Arena, Vancouver - CAR 5 @ VAN 1
The scoring for Vancouver stars to dry up for a bit. Demko struggles in the 2nd period, allowing 4 goals in a 7 minute stretch, DeSmith performs stronger once Demko is taken out, but it was not enough for them. Two more goals from Sebastian Aho puts him as one of the frontrunners for the Conn Smythe. Andersen's 36 saves also played a key part in keeping Vancouver's scoring at bay.

Carolina leads 2-1

Game 4 - Rogers Arena, Vancouver - CAR 5 @ VAN 6

Trailing 4-2 at the 2nd intermission, Vancouver fought back with 4 goals in the third to take back the series lead. JT Miller provided 1 G 2 A in this third period to build up the comeback. Allowing 3 powerplay opportunities, Vancouver could have played cleaner, but managing to kill two off kept them in the game early. Two games away from a cup, fans are getting excited, but are still remembering the pain of the 2011 finals.

Series tied 2-2

Game 5 - PNC Arena, Raleigh - VAN 5 @ CAR 6

Vancouver play yet another overtime game, taking an extra 21:15 for a result. Unfortunately for the Canucks it was not the result they wanted, with Jordan Staal scoring the game winner. Nils Hoglander performs well for Vancouver in their losing effort, with 1G, 2A. Aho picks up another 3 A as his strong postseason keeps going. Vancouver need a win back home to force their 4th game 7 of the postseason.

Carolina lead 3-2

Game 6 - Rogers Arena, Vancouver - CAR 2 @ VAN 5

The final game of the season in Vancouver, and Vancouver puts on a night to remember for their fans. With 4 assists from JT Miller, he makes himself clear as Vancouver's leading Conn Smythe candidate if with a cup win. Brock Boeser has a two goal game as Fredrik Andersen has nothing to put up with with a 42 shot night. Vancouver gets themselves back to the dreaded game 7 of a cup final, hoping this goes differently than 2011.

Series tied 3-3

Game 7 - PNC Arena, Raleigh - VAN 1 @ CAR 6

More playoff heartbreak for Vancouver as they are unable to get their scorers. Kotkaniemi has 3 G and 2 A as he stars in the final dominant performance of the season. Michael Bunting provided 2 big hits playing a part in Vancouver's 11 takeaways. Quinn Hughes had a nightmare game, with a -3 +/- and failing to record a point. This is Vancouver's fourth loss in the cup final, and Carolina's second up win.

Carolina wins 4-3

Castonguay announced the following moves to team staff:

Extensions:
Tod Button (Scout), David Akerblom (Scout), Scott Cyr (Trainer)

Releasing:
Steve Plau (Scout), Jason Taylor (Scout), Zach McLean (Assistant Coach)

To clear up a couple of contract spots, Calgary made the following trades:
Dryden Hunt to NJD for their 6th Round pick in 2025
Walker Duehr to OTT for their 2024 5th round pick

She also announced that the following prospects will recieve ELCs:

LD, Etienne Morin,19
C, Jaden Lipinski, 19
C, Cole Huckins, 21
LW/RW, Jack Beck, 21

The following players will be entering free agency:
UFAs:
AJ Greer
Chris Tanev
Marco Scandella

RFAs:
Jan Jenik,
Connor Zary,
Will Cuylle,
Yan Kuznetsov

Thoughts on 2024/25 Roster
Calgary's forward lines are the biggest question ahead of 24/25. While there are some strong players such as Huberdeau, Kadri and Mangiapane, the core is getting old and needs young stars to rise up. Kadri has been very impressive but also has been leading to intra-team conflict, which lengthened some of Calgary's slumps.

Defense:
The blue line, when healthy is starting to become a point of strength for Calgary. Young stars like Boqvist and Moser have the ability to hold down positions for years to come, and even some of the veterans have a few years ahead of them. Losing Tanev and Lajoie will be a shame, so acquiring a strong defensive defenseman would be a plus in the offseason.

Goalie:
Of the Flames goaltending, Markstrom is a proven effective NHL goalie, Vladar has shown his strength and Wolf needs more time in the AHL. With his extension this year, the current plan is to start Wolf in the AHL, and if he succeeds maybe look to move either Vladar or Markstrom to make room in the NHL.

As we have a fairly thin prospect pool, and neither of our 1st round picks will be high enough for NHL ready talent, the goal will be to draft best player regardless of position.

The Pittsburgh Penguins make the announcement that Marc-Andre Fleury's number 29 will permanently hang from the rafters, and will be retired Tuesday December 3rd in their game against the Vegas Golden Knights.

2024 GM Changes:

At 81 years old, Lou Lamouriello has finally made the decision to retire. Having coached since the late 1960s, Lamouriello has contributed much to the game of hockey. Taking the New Jersey Devils to three cups in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Lamoriello's Islanders were unable reach the same achievement, but have put up strong seasons for many years. Craig Conroy, an assistant within the Calgary Flames organisation, who was tipped to be appointed the Flames GM instead of Castonguay, will be taking over the Rangers front office.

Capitals GM, Brian Maclellan, felt that with the team going into a rebuild, he was not the man to build the next generation in Washington. After 9 seasons as GM, including winning the Stanley Cup in 2018, he has stepped down as president of Hockey Operations. Joe Sakic will be making a move from the Avalanche to head up this new era in the Washington front office.

2024 Coaching Changes:

New Jersey make the announcement that Head Coach Lindy Ruff has made the decision to finish up his coaching career. Despite a respectable season with the Devils, Ruff said he felt that it was the right time to move on. Nashville assistant coach Rob Schederi will be taking over behind the benches in New Jersey. A coach known for working well with young players and defensemen, Schuderi is a good manager of players and should help the Devils young prospects find their feet in the NHL.

Philidelphia made a similar announcement, as Flyers coach John Tortorella also made the decision to retire. A long time fixture behind NHL benches Tortorella coached 5 different teams across 21 years. The highlight of his career as a coach was winning the 03/04 cup in Tampa Bay. After missing the playoffs twice with the Flyers speculation of his firing was brewing, and he made the decision to leave instead of being forced out. Former Jeff Halpern will take over, having one the cup twice as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

After a disappointing end of the season, Greg Cronin will also finish up behind the benches at Anaheim. An internal move was made here, with consultant Larry Barron being appointed Cronin's replacement. While many people do not thing Barron has what it takes to coach at this level, he be hoping to prove his doubters wrong.

Another long term NHL coach, Rick Bowness, also made the decision to retire. After leading teams to 5 playoff appearances over 14 seasons, Bowness also spent another almost 30 years in other coaching roles. After being fired from Colorado, Jared Bedar will be hoping to bring his success to Winnipeg, and end Canada's cupless streak.

Ownership Changes:
Boston, Colorado, Los Angeles and Vegas will all have new ownership for the 24/25 season.

Calgary make a few changes to team personnel.

The coaching staff will have two new faces. Former Tampa assistant Jeff Blashill will be mostly working with the Flames blue line. While Blashill's name has been thrown around a bit for head coaching roles, with no offers this offseason, he has made the decision to become part of Huska's team. He will be joined by Troy Jutting, who after many years as a college coach, will be making the move into an NHL staff.

Meanwhile in the scouting departments Kieran Ferns and Stefan Horvath will both be joining the Flames amateur scouting teams.

2024 Offseason part 1

NHL Free Agency 2024:

Forwards:
The headliner of this offseason will be forward Steven Stamkos. Coming off an all-star season, Stamkos is still an elite quality offensive player and a huge addition to any top line. Two way centre Elias Lindholm will also be a major move, unable to make a deal with Calgary or St Louis, he will be facing the open market. A very memorable postseason will have boosted Anthony Beavillier's asking price as he looks for his third NHL team. The other major free agent forwards are Sammy Blais, Viktor Arvidsson and Sam Lafferty. The New York Rangers are also yet to agree to a deal with Kaapo Kakko, but as a restricted free agent there are no thoughts of him moving teams for now.

Defensemen:

The free agent options on the blue line are a bit thinner with Filip Hronek headlining the class. The shock Conn Smythe winner would be a strong addition to any powerplay and scouts believe there is more to come from him. Brady Skjei, John Klingberg and Erik Gustafsson are other more veteran options.

Goalies:

After a huge class of goalies retiring in the offseason, many teams will be looking for options to replace them. Matt Murray is one of the best free agent options in netminders this offseason as teams may struggle to find goalie upgrades on the free agent market.

Day 1:

Carolina trades former 2nd round pick RD Scott Morrow to Florida, for AHL centre Zac Dalpe and a 4th round pick in 2024
Colorado trades Ryan Johansen to San Jose, picking up exciting 19 year old power forward Kasper Halttunen
Vancouver trades Phil Di Guiseppe and the rights to Artyom Manukyan to Carlolina for Jordan Staal (25 % salary retained)
Anaheim sends Ross Johnston to Philadelphia in exchange for 20 year old Ethan Samson

Day 2:

Boston sends Morgan Geekie to New Jersey for Curtis Lazar

DRAFT LOTTERY

Calgary does not move during the lottery, Philadelphia win the lottery and get the first overall pick. Calgary will have the 9th and 28th overall picks in the first round.

Calgary Picks:
Round 1, 9th Overall, Konsta Helenius, C, 18, Jukurit Mikkeli, SML, 10 G, 12 A
A strong skater, Helenius projects to be a oustanding playmaker and top line centre. He reads the game really well, and can handle the puck with ease. Helenius is also excellent at taking faceoffs already. While he could likely play in the NHL as a fringe player this season, Calgary want him to finish another season in Finland where they can monitor him then look to bring him across for 25/26. Projected at 4th overall, many were suprised he fell this far for Calgary to pick up at 9th.

Round 1, 28th Overall, Ryder Ritchie, RW, 17, Prince Albert Raiders, WHL, 65 GP, 19 G, 35 A
A really strong defender, Ryder Ritchie will be able to deliver huge hits to opponents, as a good skater with strong puckhandling, he projects to be a good power forward in the NHL one day. Highly professional and a team player, locker room chemistry will not be a worry about Ritchie. He's not got the best balance, so will have to learn to play against some of the tough hits made by NHL defensemen.

Round 2, 21st overall, Aron Kiviharju, LD, 18, HIFK Helsinki, LIIGA, 42 GP, 5 G, 8 A
A great powerplay option, Kiviharju is an excellent playmaker. While a bit undersized for a D at 5'11" and 175 lbs, his offensive game should more than make up for his lack of physical presence. Even his smaller stature shouldn't be a liablity defensively, with an excellent defensive read, skating and good stick check. He's still somewhat raw, but should grow into an excellent NHL player.

Round 3, 73rd overall, Mazden Leslie, RD, 19, Vancouver Giants, WHL, 57 GP, 8 G, 25 A
An older, slightly more polished defense option, Leslie is another blue line playmaker. With a dangerous long range shot, he scored 3 powerplay goals for Vancouver in the WHL this season. Slightly better defensively than Kiviharju, if Leslie can work on his defense, he could be come an extremely versatile defenseman.

Round 4, 105th overall, Jan Sprynar, RW, 19, Rimouski Oceanic, QMJHL, 62 GP, 35 G, 39 A
A strong goalscorer, Jan Sprynar scored 34 goals for Rimouski this season in the QMJHL. With excellent skating and good playmaking as well, Sprynar could contribute lots of goals to his team. Not the hardest worker or smartest kid, the challenge with Sprynar is less about skills and more about attitude.

Round 5, 155th overall, Samuel Fiala, C, 19, Val-D'Or Foreurs, 67 GP, 31 G, 38 A
A bit further from the NHL than some of the other players drafted, Samuel Fiala still has a high celing. A strong chance creator and quick skater, Fiala could launch counter attacks and catch many defensive structures off guard. Additionally Fiala could be used in a more defensive role with strong positioning and checking.

Round 6, 169th overall, Dominik Petr, C, 19, Brandon Wheat Kings, WHL, 68 GP, 11 G, 14 A
The final pick in a draft full of creative playmakers for Calgary, Petr gives them another long term option to set up chances. Not as strong physically, big hits may be a problem for Petr. However if he can use his speed to his advantage, he could still be a proble for NHL defensive structures.

Preseason games:

L 5-0 @ ARI
Weegar and Honzek struggled in the preseason opener and Arizona proved too strong.

W 4-2 vs CBL
Honzek scored two to make up for his rough first game. Coronato scores his first goal since his injury last year. Wolf impresses in his first NHL chance in a while.

L 8-1 @ NYI
Markstrom struggles in his second game in goal for the Flames. Honzek continues to struggle to adapt to the NHL pace, and will almost certainly need time in the AHL to help the transition.

L 5-4 @ COL
Beauviller playes excellent defensively. Markstrom continues his struggling preseason.

L 3-1 vs TOR
More struggles as the preseason proves to be more about getting the young talent playing instead of winning games.

OTW 3-2 @ NYR
Beauvillier scores and the Flames fanbase is slightly more reassured after the rough preseason start.

W 8-0 vs NRY
Everything goes right for the Flames. Preseason invite Kosta Helenius scores a hat trick, Beauvillier sets up two, and Wolf proves he's not as far from the NHL as the team may have thought.

Final Preseason transactions:
Detroit trades Jeff Petry to the Flyers for a 4th round pick
Dallas trades John Peterka to the Bruins for a 3rd round pick
Ottawa trades Anton Forsberg to the Oilers for a 4th round pick
Ottawa trades Ridley Grieg to the Penguins for a 3rd round pick
Winnipeg trades Mason Appleton to the Hurricanes for a 3rd round pick
Dallas trades Anthony Stolarz to the Penguins for a 5th round pick
Buffalo trades Eric Comrie to Dallas for a 3rd round pick.
Calgary pick up Cole Sillinger off waivers from Columbus

2024 October Recap

Opening night lines:
Huberdeau/Kadri/Beauvillier
Sharangovich/Backlund/Mangiapane
Pelletier/Sillinger/Coronato
Cuylle/Ruzicka/Fix-Wolansky

Weegar/Andersson
Hanifin/Hronek
Moser/Boqvist

Wolf
Markstrom

L 7-4 vs LAK
Suprise show of faith as Calgary opts for Wolf to be the opening night goalie. Beauvillier and Hronek make their Flames debut. Beauvillier gets 4 assists but that isn't enough as the Kings put 7 past Wolf.

L 5-3 vs STL
Kadri impresses with 1 G 2 A, but Markstrom struggles continuing his preseason form. St Louis make 41 shots, but Calgary keep pace with them on 39 shots. Anthony Beauvillier is tied for first in the NHL in assists.

L 10-0 vs NYI
Markstrom gets absolutely destroyed as the 51 shot Islanders absolutely tear through Calgary.

OTW 5-4 vs FLA
The first win of the new season, and some of the existing stars come through. Mangiapane and Backlund both open their scoring for the season. Huberdeau is the hero in OT, as the Markstrom still struggles but has success when needed. Noah Hanifin is injured so Jesper Aspirot will be joining the NHL roster temporarily.

L 5-3 @ MIN
Despite keeping Minesota under 30 shots, Markstrom has still been a liability to the Flames. With a .841 SV% there are questions as to if he can remain the netminder for Calgary.

Dustin Wolf to AHL, Dan Vladar to NHL

L 7-1 @ BOS
Another case of Markstrom struggling with a fairly reasonable shot total, conceding 7 goals off 33 shots. Calgary can only manage 1 goal with their 30.

SOW 4-3 @ TOR
Another high scoring game where Calgary makes 55 shots, Markstrom finally has a good game and the Flames pull out their second win of the season.

L 8-5 @ NYI
Calgary still struggling with goaltending, as this game 36 shots are turned into 8 goals. Calgary only manage to convert 52 shots into 5 goals. Despite a weak defensive game, Jakob Pelletier was a star offensively, with a goal and two assists.

SOL 4-3 @ NYR
Another close game that Calgary are unable to get results in. Huberdeau the best of the Calgary players as despite holding NY to 21 shots, Calgary are stil unable to win.

TRANSACTION:
Calgary sends Rory Kerins and the rights to Jan Jenik to Montreal for Lucas Condotta

W vs ANA 5-4
Calgary finally end their bad run of form, as Markstrom makes 40 saves and Beavillier gets a goal and an assist. Huberdeau's two points also keep him tied 8th in the league for points.

Overview: Bad defense and awful goaltending has cost the Flames a lot this month. Markstrom has the second lowest save % of all goalies with 4 or more starts. Despite being one of the best shot creating teams in the league, they are also struggling to get them past goalies.

Leaders
Goals: Huberdeau (7), Kadri (6), Beauvillier (4), Backlund (3), Weegar/Pelletier/Mangiapane (2)
Assists: Beauvillier (9), Huberdeau/Kadri (8), Weegar/Hronek (5)
Points: Hubderdeau (15), Kadri (14), Beauvillier (13), Weegar (7), Hronek/Pelletier (6)
PIM: Hronek/Moser (10), Andersson (6), Weegar (5), Pelletier/Mangiapane/Sharangovich (4)
Hits: Mangiapane/Huberdeau (20), Beauvillier (17), Sharangovich (13), Weegar (12)
Shots Blocked: Hronek (23), Andersson (16), Weegar (14), Moser (8), Boqvist (5)

Prospects:
Konsta Helenius, C, 18, SML
Helenius has had a strong start to his SML season. With 13 games played, he has 5 goals and 5 assists. Finally starting to get top line minutes, Helenius may be in for a big season this year.

Samuel Fiala, C, 19, QMJHL
Another centre with a strong october, Fiala has 8 G and 13 A from his 16 GP. With his offensive production so prolific, Calgary is taking notes as their current lineup is in a scoring slump.

Samuel Honzek, C, 19, AHL
Honzel has played decently in the AHL with 2 G and 2 A in his 6 GP in the AHL. With scouts and coaching staff believe he is ready for the NHL, he is expected to play against Columbus in a few days.

Looks like you signed Beauvillier and Hronek. How much did they cost?
