A new look in Calgary

After a number of years as an NHL Agent and Assistant General Manager, Emilie Castonguay was announced to be the architect of the next era of Calgary Flames.

"I'm pleased to welcome Emilie to Calgary" announced President of Hockey Operations, Don Maloney. "While I regret she was unable to be in place for the 2023 offseason, I have no doubt that she will be ready to make moves during the 23/24 season".

In the initial press conference Castonguay was asked about the contract of Head Coach Ryan Huska, signed before her arrival.

"I see no point in not honoring the deal made with Ryan" she confirmed. "I want to keep disruption minimal to the team to start the 2023 season"

The initial front office moves made by Castonguay were fairly small, with scouts Reginald DeLay, Oscar Rosenberg and Milan Janacek brought in to improve overseas scouting.

Castonguay has two seasons to get ownership to buy into her plan for the side.

Notable Preseason events:
Nazem Kadri gets involved in an off ice incident.

Arizona Coyotes sign Patrick Kane

This forms a rift with Adam Ruzicka, who creates a clique including Dillon Dube.

As part of trying to break up the Clique, the Flames trade Dube to Arizona, in exchange for young D Janis Moser.

To upgrade a sluggish offense in the preseason, the Flames acquire Trey Fix-Wolansky off waivers.

October (4-4-1)
W 4-1 vs WPG (Oct 11)
Jets goaltender Laurent Brossoit put up a strong fight, but against 48 shots there is only so much you can do. Kadri gets his season off to an exciting start with two goals. New arrival Janie Moser makes an impact on the blue line immediately, with 3 takeaways and 2 assists.

W 3-2 @ PIT (Oct 14)
A strong early start from the Penguins, taking a 2-0 lead into the first intermission, but Coronato and Huberdea both open their scoring for the season in the second period. Backlund then led by example, scoring the winning goal in the thirdperiod

L 3-0 @ WAS (Oct 16)
A very forgettable display defensively from Calgary leads to their first defeat of the season. Markstrom struggled despite facing only 26 shots, and a badly timed scoring slump meant the Flames could not fight their way back into the game. The media single out Jonathan Huberdeau as a key part of that loss.

W 3-2 @ BUF (Oct 19)
Calgary continues their eastern road trip with a trip to Buffalo, who are 3-0 on the season. A first period goal for the Sabres brings back memories of the Caps game, but this time results are better. Calgary fight off 5 penalties, to continue their 100% penalty kill rate. Dan Vladar wins his first start of the season.

L 3-2 @ CBJ (Oct 20)
The travelling road trip takes it's toll on the Flames, as they are unable to repeat last night's performance. Trey Fix-Wolansky has a second game struggling defensively, and with 0 points in 5 games, questions are being asked if that was the right move.

L 4-1 @ Det (Oct 22)
The final game of the eastern road trip, and Vladar's second start left much to be desired. Detroit had no problems tearing through the Flames' defense, making 57 shots and 4 goals. A consolation late goal from Trey Fix-Wolansky was not enough to prevent this.

L 3-2 vs NYR (Oct 24)
A much needed return to the Saddledome is not enough to stop the losing streak. Moser takes the lead in assists for the Flames, as the loss of Dube's shooting becomes clear.

W 5-3 vs STL (Oct 26)
In his 750th NHL game, Elias Lindholm scores a hat trick to lead his team to victory. Kevin Rooney also shined on the lower lines, providing the other two goals for the team. Markstrom's 24 saves from 27 shots was a bit of a down game, but the high scoring made up for his faults.

SOL 5-4 vs EDM (Oct 29)
The first month of Castonguay and Huska's time in charge ends with the Battle of Alberta. A high scoring thriller, both teams registering over 35 shots, this game lasted all the way into a 5 round shootout, with Andrew Mangiapane missing his opportunity to force a sixth.

Calgary Stats
Goals - Lindholm (4), Kadri, Rooney (3), Huberdeau, Backlund, Mangiapane (2)
Assists - Huberdeau (5), Sharangovich, Coronato, Hanifin, Moser, Ruzicka (4)
Points - Huberdeau (7), Sharangovich, Coronato, Backlund, Kadri, Lindholm (5)
PIM - Lindholm (7), Backlund, Coleman, Kadri, Huberdeau (6)
Shots - Huberdeau (32), Kadri (30), Hanifin (29), Mangiapane (28), Andersson (21)
Hits - Weegar (20), Coleman (19), Huberdeau (17), Mangiapane, Coronato (16)
Takeaways - Mangiapane (9), Weegar, Moser, Andersson (8), Huberdeau, Lindholm (7)
Blocks - Andersson (15), Moser, Zadorov (10), Weegar, Tanev (9)
FO% - Sharangovich (75%), Huberdeau (62.2%), Pettersen (66.7%), Rooney (60%), Lindholm (58.3%)

Prospects
Jeremie Poirier (AHL) - 5GP 0G 1A - showing defensive promise, but needs to be move involved in playmaking to excel in his role.

Dustin Wolf (AHL) - 4GP, 3.50 GAA, .896 sv%, -0.41 GSAA/60 - meant to be on the cusp of being an NHL regular, Wolf's october struggles are causing concerns for the future in net for the Flames.

Etienne Morin (QMJHL) - 15 GP, 8G, 11 A - Morin's puckhandling skills on the blue line are playing a key role in the best offensive team in the QMJHL. His physicality and defense are also solid, so Morin should have the potential to be a major figure on the Flames blue line.

Around the NHL:
Despite Eichel on the IL, Shea Theodore and William Karlsson have led Vegas (7-2-1, 15 points) to a strong start in their title defense. The Golden Knights lead the league in goals, and are top 5 in goals against.

Marchand is still elite on both sides of the puck. However, stars can only get you so far, and without production from the lower lines, Boston has started the season in a slump, with a 3-5-1 record, bottom of the Atlantic division.

While making the big preseason move of signing Patrick Kane, October has not been the Coyotes month. New acquisition Dillon Dube has also been quiet in front of goal, as Arizona are yet to win a game, and have the least goals scored of any NHL team.

Calder Race
Connor Bedard (CHI) is showing why he was the first overall pick. With 9 points from his first 6 games, Bedard is the early frontrunner for the Calder Trophy this year. A strong performance from Henry Thrun (9 GP, 1 G, 7 A) puts him second in the odds, as a small group of players begin to clump together behind him. The only rookie goalie so far, Devon Levi (6GP, .942 sv, 1.85 GAA) has also made a strong showing for a Calder chance.

Early thoughts on expiring contracts:
Elias Lindholm, strong scorer, off to a great start. However wants 7.2m AAV over 6 years with NMC. Unsure about giving that money to a 28 year old on a team more than a couple of seasons from being serious contenders. Likely doesn't finish the season in Calgary

Noah Hanifin, strong physicals and defensive skill, wants 6.4m AAV over 3 years. Better contract than Lindholm, but Calgary needs to clear future cap space so moves might need to be made. Possible return.

Kevin Rooney, shown promise on the third line this year. Only wants 2 years, 1.7m AAV. Likely resign, but will consider offers.

Adam Ruzicka, younger third liner wants very small contract (2 years 1m AAV). Not vital but could be useful piece.

Chris Tanev, age is starting to catch up with him and he has been a healthy scratch in 3 games in october. Look to trade or let walk.

Jeremie Poirier, starting to show a lot of promise in the AHL, wants a low contract and will likely be in the NHL before the end of next season.

Good job so far.

How has Castonguay responded to the media's criticism of Huberdeau?

I noticed that you said Dube was traded to Nashville for Moser but I believe you mean Arizona?

Wow, Huberdeau with a good start defensively and third on the team in hits?

Cool so far, interesting to see the thoughts on the expiring contracts. Interested to see if you can get as much or more for Lindholm as IRL Flames did.

Castonguay has been fairly defensive of Huberdeau. As one of the best performing players on the team, his down games are more than worth his production.

Also corrected the trade details!

Definitely have to make some decisions soon - there's a number of players on big contracts that may come back to bite if Calgary aren't a contender in the next couple of seasons.

Glad you're enjoying it so far. Still working through exactly how i want to lay out my monthly posts and stuff (especially once it comes to offseason).

November (4-8-2)
W 6-3 vs DAL (Nov 1)
A new month and an offensive explosion gives Dallas their first regulation loss of the season. Mangiapane (1G, 2A) and Kadri (2G) were the standout performers of the night. However, during this game, Mangiapane suffers a corneal abrasion and is looking to miss 1-2 weeks of games.

Transaction
RW Andrew Mangiapane to IL, C Connor Zary (AHL) joins the NHL roster.

L 4-1 @ SEA (Nov 4)
Mangiapane's offense is missed, as while the Flames keep up with the Kraken's shots, they are unable to get through Grubauer. Dissapointing performances defensively from Janis Moser and Yegor Sharangovich.

L 2-1 vs NSH (Nov 7)
Another day another offensive struggle, Lindholm got the Flames an early lead in the first period, but Nashville managed to fight back and win the game. Rasmus Andersson injures his Knee, but is only day to day, so no roster moves will be made.

OTL 4-3 @ TOR (Nov 10)
Connor Zary impresses in his NHL debut. Unfortunately it's not to be, as the Flames fall in overtime. On a more positive piece of news, Mangiapane is looking promising and should be ready to play tomorrow's game against Ottawa.

Transaction
C Connor Zary sent back to the AHL. RW Andrew Mangiapane added to the NHL roster.

Calgary also make two trades:
Toronto recieves rights to G Danil Chechlev, Calgary recieves D Max Lajoie and Montreal's 2024 5th round pick
Tampa Bay recieves D Nikita Zadorov, Calgary recieves Tampa's 2024 6th round pick

With Zadorov having a few dissapointing starts this season, it felt like time to move him. Calgary gets two late round picks as part of these deals. Lajoie should be more than competent on a lower defensive pairing for the Flames.

L 5-3 @ MON (Nov 14)
November continues with another woeful blue line performance. Montreal get 37 Shots and an overwhealmed Markstrom is unable to deal with them. On the plus side, some much needed help in Rasmus Andersson should be back soon.

L 5-2 vs VAN (Nov 16)
The team almost forgets how to play defense, allowing 48 shots. Rasmus Andersson's return to the lineup is woeful, with a -5 +/- and a game rating of 34.

W 4-1 vs NYI (Nov 18)
The team finally recovers from their injuries and bounces back into the winning column. Particular stand out performances from Trey Fix-Wolansky (1G 1a) and Max Lajoie (1G 1A). However this injury-free status doesn't last long with Matt Coronato fracturing his skull, being out indefinitely.

Transaction
Matt Coronato to IL. C Connor Zary (AHL) to NHL.

W 2-1 @ SEA (Nov 20)
The Flames move onto a winning streak, with Backlund and Moser playing key roles in buliding up the attack. Coach Ryan Huska also ends his controversial decision to play Kadri on the third line.

L 3-2 @ NSH (Nov 22)
The winnings streak doesn't last long, as despite Connor Zary picking up his first NHL point with an assist to Mangiapane, it wasn't enough for the Flames. The defensive woes continue, allowing 36 shots in this game.

W 5-3 @ DAL (Nov 24)
Game one of back to back games, Huberdeaum Mangiapane and Lindholm pick up 3 points each, as the first line showed up to challenge the Stars. Janis Moser has shown to be a workhorse from the blue line, able to add much needed versatility and defensive skill.

L 4-2 @ COL (Nov 25)
Day 2 of the back to back games is a lot more frustrating for the Flames. The first D pairing of Weegar and Moser remains strong, but the lower lines and penalty kill units both struggle to contain Colorado.

L 6-2 vs VGK (Nov 27)
Jack Eichel absolutely dominates the Flames, with 3G 2A. Blake Coleman has an absolute nightmare defensively, turning over the puck and unable to dominate as a power forward. As two of the most physical teams in the NHL go head to head, Vegas shuts down any scoring attempts by the Calgary top lines.

SOL 4-3 vs DAL(Nov 30)
Calgary end their dissapointing month with a shootout loss. Noah Hanifin and MacKenzie Weegar provide plenty of physicality for Dallas, but they were unable to turn their superior posession and takeaways into enough scoring.

Calgary currently sit at 8-12-3, 12th in the Western Conference and 7 points out of a playoff place

Calgary Stats
Goals - Lindholm (8), Kadri (7), Huberdeau, Backlund, Mangiapane, Coronato (5)
Assists - Huberdeau (13), Moser (10), Backlund, Sharangovich (9), Mangiapane (8)
Points - Huberdeau (18), Lindholm (15), Backlund (14), Mangiapane (13), Moser, Sharangovich, Kadri (12)
PIM - Lajoie (25), Backlund, Weegar (14), Huberdeau, Mangiapane, Coleman (12)
Shots - Huberdeau (59), Kadri (58), Mangiapane (56), Hanifin (52), Moser (49)
Hits - Weegar (47), Coleman (46), Moser, Huberdeau (37), Mangiapane (36)
Takeaways - Lindholm (23), Huberdeau (22), Weegar (17), Moser, Andersson, Backlund (15)
Blocks - Moser, Lajoie (30), Weegar, Andersson (27), Tanev (25)
FO% (min 5) - Sharangovich (51.6%), Zary (60%), Kadri (53.8%), Lindholm (53.5%), Huberdeau (52.8%)

Prospects
G Dustin Wolf (22, AHL) - 13 GP, .864 SV%, 5.51 GAA - Wolf's continued AHL struggles in his contract year are a major concern to the Flames front office, as other sources for future goaltending are being discussed.

LD Jeremie Poirier (21, AHL) - 17 GP, 4G, 7A - Almost NHL ready, but with a lack of solid defending on the current NHL blue line, there are concerns about promoting him this early. Will likely see a handful of NHL games this year with his first proper NHL season in 24/25.

LD Etienne Morin (18, QMJHL) - 22 GP, 11G 16A - Absolutely crushing it in the QMJHL this year, Morin should be close to NHL ready too.

LW Aydar Suniev (19, NCAA) - 13 GP, 3G, 4A - Still very young, and performing solidly for UMASS, Suniev could possibly do with another year in college to get more ice time before making a move to the AHL.

C Jaden Lipinski (18, WHL) - 25 GP, 10G, 8A - Jaden Lipinski is an excellent power forward for the Vancouver Giants, there are some doubts about him making an NHL move next season, but could likely be involved in position battles.

NHL Recap November 2023

[B]Eastern Conference[B]

Boston 7-14-1 (16th in East)
With Pastranak and DeBrusk on the injury list, Boston's lack of depth has been very clear. Marchand (22 GP, 6G, 13A) and James van Reimsdyk (21 GP, 12G, 8A) have been good, but Boston is lacking the sheer dominance of the top line that has set them apart in recent years. Head Coach Jim Montgomery still has the blessing of the front office, but things may turn if he is unable to orchestrate a bounce back.

Toronto 14-5-2 (3rd in East)
The Leafs have been a goalscoring machine through the season so far. Leading the league in shots/game and 3rd in goals/game, seeing Toronto on the schedule is a terrifying prospect for goalies. Auston Matthews (21 GP, 10G, 14A) and Mitch Marner (21 GP, 7G, 18A) are continuing to demonstrate their positions as two of the best offensive players in the league. Joining them is Norris frontrunner Morgan Rielly (21 GP, 7G, 17A), justifying the huge contract Toronto recently gave him.

New York Islanders 14-6-2 (1st in East)
The Islanders have started the season rock solid in defense. With captain Anders Lee and Matt Martin delivering huge hits each night, New York are the 9th lowest team in shots against/game. This low amount of shots conceeded is compounded with Ilya Sorokin (12 GP, .926 sv%, 2.05 GAA) on top of the Vezina odds currently. While the end of his new 8 year 8.3m AAV contract may be tough on the cap, if Sorokin can lead the Islanders to a cup, it will be more than worth it.

[Western Conference]

Vegas Golden Knights (16-6-2, 1st in West)
Jack Eichel (12 GP, 10G 9A) has made up for missing October almost instantly, at almost 2 points per game. Adin Hill (4 GP, .897 SV%, 3.28 GAA) has had some early struggles, but 26 year old Logan Thompson (21 GP, .908 SV%, 2.39 GAA) has taken the torch as starting goalie and risen to the occasion. Shea Theodore (24 GP, 5G, 12A) and William Karlsson (24 GP, 4G, 15A) have also been regular stars for Vegas, who are well on track to win their second cup in two years.

Edmonton Oilers (16-5-1, 2nd in West)
Death, taxes and Connor McDavid (22 GP, 16G, 21A) being good at hockey. McDavid has started the 23/24 season well on pace to win his 4th Hart Trophy and 6th Art Ross. Leon Draisaitl (22GP, 12 G, 20A) has matched up on that top line with McDavid to create plenty of offensive chances. Dominant goaltending from Stuart Skinner (17GP, .919 SV%, 2.59 GAA) and Jack Campbell (5GP, .926 SV%, 2.20 GAA) has made up for a leaky defense that is below average in shots allowed/game.

Arizona Coyotes (1-19-2, 16th in West)
Unfortunately it continues to be business as usual for Arizona. With Clayton Keller missing October, he's only played 7 games this season so far, with 5 goals and an assist. Rookie Logan Cooley (14 GP, 2G, 5A) has shown promise, as this young team appears to have plenty of potential, but this year appears to be another rough year in the desert. Andre Tourigny is under immense pressure from the front office, who may seek to make coaching changes before the new year.

Calder Race
Chicago's Connor Bedard (18 GP, 12G, 9A) has hit the ground running in the NHL. With more than twice the points of the next skater, LA's Brandt Clarke (14 GP, 4G, 8A), it's hard to see any skater challenging him for the Calder. With Buffalo's Devon Levi (16 GP, .899 SV%, 3.03 GAA) slipping after a solid October, it would take some big changes in the back end of the season for any developments to happen.

Calgary Recap December 2023

November 5-5-2

OTW 4-3 vs VAN (Dec 2)
Connor Zary makes his first NHL goal a memorable one, scoring the game winner in overtime. Both goalies had to work hard tonight with Demko having to make 35 saves and Markstrom having to make 38. A sore back means Kadri has to miss this game, but is expected to be back on the ice within the next week.

L 4-0 vs MIN (Dec 5)
Mark-Andre Fleury successfully makes 22 saves in a 4-0 shutout. Max Lajoie made 4 big hits against the wile, and Lindholm won 9/12 faceoffs, however constant giveaways and only being able to get low quality shots off caused Calgary to stutter.

W 3-1 vs CAR (Dec 7)
In Nazem Kadri's return to the lineup, the Flames rally to take down the in-form Canes. After a forgettable game against Minnesota, Adam Ruzicka makes a bounce back, with two assists and a takeaway. Despite a scoreless first period, the three goals in the second period meant that Kotkaniemi's consolation goal was not a threat to Calgary.

W 3-2 vs NJD (Dec 9)
Max Lajoie scores to further justify potential new contract talks. Elias Lindholm further ups his trade value, winning 8/10 faceoffs tonight. The lower lines come through with Mathias Emilio Pettersen scoring the OT game winner.

BREAKING NEWS
While still on leave in Sweden, Oliver Kylington becomes involved in an off ice incident. Having not played a game in almost 2 years, Castonguay confirms that the current plan is that he will not be offered an extension and will be a free agent in the off season.

W 6-3 @ COL (Dec 11)
The Flames make a statement, heading to playoff contending Colorado to walk away with a 6-3 win. However this comes at a cost. During the game, captain Mikael Backlund tore his rib cage and will miss around 3 months. Rasmus Andersson takes the first star of the game, with 4 assists in the game. Calgary will be happy to be on a winning streak as they make a trip to Vegas.

Transaction
Mikael Backlund to IL, C Ben Jones to NHL

L 5-4 @ VGK (Dec 12)
Calgary fail to keep their winning streak alive, with the Western Conference leaders being too strong for them. Rookie Mathias Emilio Pettersen proves he is NHL calibre, with his first multi goal game. Calgary's injury woes continue with a minor neck laceration keeping Huberdeau off the ice for a couple of weeks.

Transaction
Johnathan Huberdeau to IL, RW Cole Schwindt to NHL

L 5-3 @ MIN (Dec 14)
Another tough matchup for the Flames moves them onto a losing streak. Mathias Emilio Pettersen was the main talking point once again, struggling defensively, but scoring a hat trick to continue his run of form. Potential deadline target Kevin Rooney also shows his physicality, making 6 hits during the game.

SOL 2-1 vs TBL (Dec 16)
A homecoming wasn't enough to stop the losing streak, as despite a late score from Rasmus Andersson, the Flames were unable to take the shootout. The Flames also failed to score on any of their 6 powerplay chances. Another strong performance from the top D pairing, as Weegar and Moser combine for 8 hits.

L 6-2 vs FLA (Dec 18)
The losing streak continues. Kevin Rooney showed up defensively, but with Lindholm and Greer being regularly beaten by puckhandlers, the defending Eastern champs had no issue casting the Flames aside.

SOL 3-2 @ LAK (Dec 23)
A short break was not enough to reignite Calgary, who fall to 12-15-5 heading into the Christmas break. Despite holding an 2-1 lead in the last 5 minutes, the Kings fought their way into overtime, and a win in the shootout.

Transaction
Johnathan Huberdeau to NHL, RW Cole Schwindt to AHL

L 4-2 vs SEA (Dec 27)
Coming off a break, against an under pressure Dave Hakstol, with Huberdeau back in the lineup seemed like a perfect occasion for Calgary to get back in the win column, however this was not to be. Huberdeau made his return known early, with a first period goal to put the Flames up 1-0. however with 3 unanswered goals in the 3rd period, the Kraken left Calgary with the points.

W 6-2 vs PHI (Dec 31)
Calgary finishes off the year with a come from behind win. Despite falling behind 2-0, 6 unanswered goals from the Flames put them over the line. Trey Fix-Wolansky got himself three assists, repaying Castonguay's faith in bringing him to Calgary.

Calgary Stats
Goals - Lindholm (13), Kadri (11), Pettersen (8), Backlund, Pettersen, Huberdeau (7)
Assists - Huberdeau (17), Moser (15), Sharangovich, Weegar (13), Ruzicka, Backlund (11)
Points - Huberdeau (24), Lindholm (22), Moser, Sharangovich, Backlund (18)
PIM - Lajoie (27), Moser, Coleman, Greer (21), Backlund (18)
Shots - Huberdeau (85), Hanifin (83), Mangiapane (82), Kadri (81), Sharangovich (73)
Hits - Coleman (74), Weegar (65), Mangiapane (62), Greer (58), Moser (57
Takeaways - Weegar (32), Lindholm (27), Moser (24), Huberdeau (24), Hanifin (23)
Blocks - Andersson (52), Moser (47), Weegar (42), Hanifin (37), Tanev (37)
FO% (min 5) - Sharangovich (73.9%), Trey Fix-Wolansky (57.1%), Elias Lindholm (55.3%), Nazem Kadri (52.0%)

Prospects
Jeremie Poirier (21, AHL) - 26 GP, 6G 10A - Further developing his shooting and offensive read, Poirier should be ready for a Calder campaign next season.

Dustin Wolf (22, AHL) - 22GP, .892 SV%, 3.69 GAA - Wolf had a few solid outings in december, and has started turing his season around. An extension is still questionable however.

Etienne Morin (18, WHL) - 22 GP, 11G, 16A - A dominant versitile threat for Moncton, Morin is making a statement for himself in the WHL. He has also become a first pairing D for Canada at the 2023 World Juniors.

Aydar Suniev (19, NCAA) - 18 GP, 3G, 8A - Suniev is very well matched at the NCAA level. While strong physically and a good playmaker, more time in college could help his game.

Jaden Lipinski (19, WHL) - 26 GP, 10G, 8A - A long term upgrade to the second for Calgary. On a scoring slump currently but if he can turn that around he could force himself into NHL discussions next year.

I like the monthly highlights of a couple teams around the league. Wow Oilers getting better goaltending than IRL. It's too bad about Wolf... I think he's quite underrated by the game's attributes and potential, I usually commissioner mode and edit him to be a bit better. Cool that Lajoie and Moser both seem to be doing well on your blueline.

NHL Recap December 2023

Florida Panthers (23-12-1, 2nd in East)
The Panthers went 8-4-1 in December. Led by captain Aleksander Barkkov (36 GP, 19G, 23A), the defending Eastern Conference champions put themselves in a strong position to make another playoff run in 2024. Barkov and the Panthers average 3.67 goals/game, good for second in the NHL.

Toronto Maple Leafs (17-15-2, 12th in East)
Despite a strong start, December has been a month to forget in Toronto. Mitch Marner has slowed up, going scoreless in December and only picking up 5 assists. The Leafs went 3-10-0 in December with this scoring slump and will need to find ways to reinvigorate their stars to get back into a playoff place.

Detroit Red Wings (21-12-4, 4th in East)
Detroit has heated up in December, the Leafs slipping out of playoff spots gave the Red Wings an opportunity to sneak up the division. Some solid recent outings from James Reimer have been enough to keep Detroit in close games, despite not having the elite scoring of other playoff hopefuls.

Western Conference
Arizona Coyotes (8-25-2, 16th in West)
With his back up against the wall, Andre Tourigny has managed to keep his job, leading the Coyotes to go 7-6-0 in December. While still the worst team in the league, Arizona has shown that their young talent is mostly NHL ready, and with a few moves could have a strong future ahead of them.

Nashville Predators (26-10-1, 2nd in West)
After acquiring Bobby Brink from the Flyers during November, and giving him the trust to play on the top line, he has given the Flyers a breakout season. Teaming up with Filip Forsberg, and supported by Roman Josi, the Preds are one of the best scoring teams in the NHL, while also playing really tight defense. Nashville are in an excellent place to see out the contracts of a number of older players with the right support around them.

The first season of a save is always interesting with seeing how real life converts to save numbers. Agree that Wolf is underrated by the game - makes for interesting decisions in the save though

Calgary Recap January 2024

W 7-2 @ MIN (Jan 2)
Nazem Kadri dominates in the Flames first game of the new year. Forcing a change in goaltending during the first period, Calgary was absolutely relentless with their shooting. Ben Jones also scores his first NHL goal in his 8th NHL game.

W 3-1 @ NSH (Jan 4)
Calgary continue their new years win streak. The lower line stars once again with the Ruzicka/Sharangovich/Fix-Wolansky line scoring twice in the third period. Tanev dominates defensively, blocking 4 shots and ending with a defensive rating of 93.

Transaction
The Flames claim C Jan Jenik off waivers from the Arizona Coyotes. A strong skater and solid puck handler, Jenik will allow Connor Zary more time to develop in the AHL after Coronato's season is likely to be over.

L 5-1 @ PHI (Jan 6)
The first of an away double header, the Flames have no defensive answers for the Flyers. New arrival Jan Jenik struggles in his first outing, with 2 giveaways. With little defensive help from the forward lines, the Flames blue lines were kept too busy to be able to make a defensive difference. In another blow, Blake Coleman will likely be unavailable until almost the All Star break, straining his pectoral muscle.

L 4-2 @ CHI (Jan 7)
Another forgettable game for Jan Jenik, as the 4th line forward continues to raise questions about the decision to bring him in. Adam Ruzicka scores his 7th and 8th goals of the season, well on pace for his first NHL season with double digit goals. Noah Hanifin bruises his jaw, and is day to day, as the blue line depth thins further.

L 4-1 vs OTT (Jan 9)
Jan Jenik's woes extend into a third game. The defense makes a lot of hits and blocks, but with little support up front, Markstrom is unable to deal with the 50 shots he is forced to face.

L 4-1 @ ARI (Jan 11)
Another tough day for the Flames. Jenik finally has a more impressive game, with a positive shot differential and two shots on goal, but a lack of scoring and rough outing for Markstrom mean Calgary fall to western conference cellar dwellers Arizona.

W 6-3 @ VGK (Jan 13)
With Hanifin back in the lineup, Calgary makes a huge statement, taking down Vegas at T-Mobile Arena. Adam Ruzicka continues his memorable run of form, scoring and setting up 3 more goals. Calgary's powerplay still has issues however, unable to score on their two chances tonight, with a 5% PP rate, the lowest in the league.

L 5-2 vs ARI (Jan 16)
A win against the best team in the league sits between two losses to the worst. Former Flame Dillon Dube gets the first goal against his former team. Bad games from Lajoe and Tanev allow the Coyotes free reign in front of the net.

W 6-2 vs TOR (Jan 18)
A night where everything clicks for the Flames. Markstrom makes 37 saves, as the forwards keep Samsonov on his toes. Lindholm, Mathias Emilio Pettersen and Huberdeau all have multiple point nights. Lajoie is day to day with a sore Achillies.

W 4-1 vs EDM (Jan 20)
The Oilers run into a hot Markstrom as Calgary takes down their in-province rivals at the Saddledome. Two assists from Kadri and 34 saves from Markstrom are the highlights of the game.

W 3-2 vs STL (Jan 23)
Despite going down 2-0 halfway through the second period, the Flames rally together as Huberdeau takes control on the ice with a score and 2 assists. Vladar also continues to impress in his occasional starts.

W 6-2 vs CBJ (Jan 25)
In a game that was all Calgary, Jan Jenik opened the scoring in the first period, and the Flames soared to a convincing 6-0 lead midway through the second. Columbus started to fight back with two goals, but that was all they managed to do.

SOW 2-1 vs CHI (Jan 27)
In what quickly became a battle between Mangiapane and Huberdeau vs Seth Jones' defensive efforts and Petr Mrazek's goaltending, Calgary got the last laugh. Calder favourite Connor Bedard also scored, but Mangiapane's shootout goal meant the Flames left with the full two points.

Calgary Stats
Goals - Lindholm (17), Kadri (14), Huberdeau, Mangiapane (12), Ruzicka (11)
Assists - Huberdeau (24), Sharangovich (22), Moser, Weegar (19), Ruzicka, Andersson (16)
Points - Huberdeau (36), Lindholm (31), Sharangovich (28), Ruzicka (27), Mangiapane (25)
PIM - Weegar (28), Greer (25), Moser, Coleman (23), Mangiapane (22)
Shots - Mangiapane (124), Huberdeau (119), Hanifin (117), Kadri (111), Weegar (96)
Hits - Mangiapane (90), Weegar (88), Greer (87), Moser (80), Coleman (78)
Takeaways - Weegar (43), Lindholm (38), Moser (37), Huberdeau (32), Hanifin (30)
Blocks - Andersson (77), Weegar (64), Moser (61), Tanev (56), Lajoie (46)
FO% (min 5) - Sharangovich (67.9%, 28 FO), Fix-Wolansky (63.6, 11 FO), Pettersen (58.3, 24 FO), Lindholm (54.8, 686 FO), Jones (53.8, 78 FO)

Prospects
Jeremie Poirier - 34 GP, 6G, 14A - not as strong a month as others, but still looking very promising to make an NHL cameo by the end of the season, with a **** to fight for a roster spot.

Dustin Wolf - 32 GP, .899 SV%, 3.31 GAA - Wolf has performed a lot better in the AHL in January - he regularly shows the ability to make a high number of saves in a game, something that he struggled with early this season. Discussion about him in the AHL next year is becoming more acceptable.

Etienne Morin - 25 GP, 12G, 18A - While missing a large amount of the QMJHL in jab due to World Juniors and injury, Morin continues to impress. For team Canada, he scored, got 5 assists and made 10 hits on their way to the gold medal. In the 3 games he has played since then, he has a point in all of them. He's day to day so should be back on the ice in no time.

With the deadline approaching I'm curious who Castonguay and Huska see as key players for the future and who is available. We all know Lindholm is likely to be traded, but are pieces like Mangiapane, Sharangovich and Ruzicka seen as building blocks for the future or expendable assets if the right trade comes along? How far away is this team from competing for the Cup?

NHL Recap January 2024

Eastern Conference

Detroit Red Wings (28-16-5, 2nd in East)
A team already sitting in playoff positions, January was a great month for the Detroit Red Wings. Dylan Larkin bounced back from a slower start to the year, with 8G 13A in his 12 games played this month. Reimer had a few shaky starts, but in general continued to provide strong goaltending.

Philadelphia Flyers (16-30-4, 16th in East)
A tough season in Philly becomes even worse. With Arizona finding a run of form, the Flyers move into conversation for worst team in the NHL. Sean Couturier has not been particularly effective this season, recording 23 points and a Goal Differential of -16. As the worst scorers and worst defense in the league, Philadelphia need a lot of work to become a contending team again.

Ottawa Senators (26-17-3, 8th in East)
Ottawa's rebuild looks to be finally stepping over. With Chabot going at a point-per-game pace from the blue line and young stars Tim Stutzle (46 GP, 24G, 22A) and Jakob Chuchrun (45 GP, 6G, 30A), Ottawa fans are experiencing winning hockey for the first time in years.

Western Conference
Minnesota Wild (26-19-4, 6th in West)
Another star with a strong Janurary is Wild winger Kirill Kaprizov (49 GP 29G, 39A). With an excellent penalty kill and powerplay, Kaprizov and Matt Boldy (49 GP, 21 G, 30A) are combining for plenty of goals. Rookie Kyle Masters has also made a statement, with 4 assists in his first 2 NHL Games. Loved by Minnesota media and in Hart contention, Kaprizov is more than happy as the face of the Wild franchise.

Arizona Coyotes (17-29-2, 16th in West)
While GM Bill Armstrong is unlikely to return in Arizona, the Coyotes start to 2024 may have saved him a premature firing. Patrick Kane proves to be a good signing for Arizona, leading the team in points, though with the team in the drain and Kane facing the end of his career, questions are being raised if Arizona should try to move him for more young talent.

Anaheim Ducks (23-24-2, 11th in West)
As a team overperforming preseason expectations, Anaheim had a strong start to their seasons. However they have begun slipping a bit away from playoff positions. In addition to this slump, the Ducks recently announced starting goalie John Gibson will miss up to three months with a broken thigh. While not official yet, the media expects Alex Stalock to be recalled from the AHL to fill in. With AHL stats of 15GP, .898 SV% and -2.18 GSAA, there are questions if Stalock is enough, or if Anaheim will be looking at goalie options in the upcoming trade deadline.

Trade Deadline thoughts

This team needs to likely make some big decisions about a number of key players in the near future. With many older players on long contracts, Castonguay will have to decide who will be worth investing in, and how to clear up cap space for a contending team in the future.

Pending free agents

Adam Ruzicka
A strong 3rd line centre, Adam Ruzicka has shown that he is more than capable of performing at an NHL level. The Flames organisation has offered him a 3 year 1.1 mil AAV extension.

Elias Lindholm
Having another very strong season for the Flames, moving Lindholm would likely mean giving up the slim chance of playoffs this year. However wanting a 6 year 7.6M deal with a no-movement clause, Castonguay has her reservations about offering an NMC to a player who will likely be regressing by the time this team is a true contender.

Noah Hanifin
A solid defensive option on the first pairing, Hanifin has been another core piece of the Flames this season. At only 27, and wanting around 4 year, 6.7 mil AAV contract, the current plan is to discuss an extension.

Jeremie Poirier
A young defenseman with high potential Poirier and the Flames are finalising talks on a 3 year 1.1mil AAV contract.

Ben Jones
Another young centre coming through the system, Ben Jones will be likely extended at around 2 years, 1.5 AAV.

Other

Nazem Kadri
Continuing a slow decline as he ages, Nazem Kadri's 6 years at 7 mil AAV remaining will likely become an issue for Calgary in the future. While not being listed as a "must trade", the Flames are open to conversations.

Andrew Mangiapane
With his contract expiring after the 24/25 season, Mangiapane will be one of the first priorities of the front office in the offseason. As a very popular player in Calgary, the goal is to keep him long term, though if there are issues with contract negotiations, Castonguay could be talked into a package.

While also big contracts, Huberdeau and Weegar will likely remain with Calgary for the next 3-4 years, unless they show significant regression, or Calgary finds themselves with cap issues.

The controversial part of this announcement was the appointment of Stan Bowman, signing a contract until the end of the 2024 season.

Transaction
Calgary announces a number of extensions to expiring contracts:

Jeremie Poirier - 1,060,000 AAV, 3 years
Noah Hanifin - 6,400,000 AAV, 4 years
Ben Jones - 1,470,000 AAV, 2 years
Adam Ruzicka - 1,088,750 AAV, 3 years

W 2-2 @ BOS (Feb 6)
Calgary come back from the All-Star break to head east to Boston. Markstrom making 39 saves, and Fix-Wolansky and Huberdeau having multi-point games, the Flames continued the misery for struggling Boston.

L 8-1 @ NJD (Feb 8)
Calgary proved no match for dominant New Jersey shooting. Markstrom conceeded 5 goals off 27 shots, and halfway through the second period was lifted for Vladar, who only fared a little better. The blue line struggled to make hits, and were quickly overrun by New Jersey.

L 4-2 @ NYI (Feb 10)
Ilya Sorokin wins the goalie duel with Markstrom, as both sides make 30+ saves. Weegar struggles again defensively, but Huberdeau's 2 goals keep the Flames in the game.
Kadri also looked lost at times, as puckhandlers found no trouble getting past him.

Breaking News
Despite hanging with the playoff places, the Tampa Bay Lightning have decided to bring an end to coach Jon Cooper's time in charge. After leading the team to a 26-22-4 record, the 2 time Stanley Cup winning coach will be replaced by Grand Rapids Griffins general manager Shawn Horcoff.

L 5-0 @ NYR (Feb 12)
Another tough loss to a New York team. Markstrom looks almost lost at the crease, despite only having to face 33 shots tonight. Adam Ruzicka was the only player of positive note, with 4 takeaways.

Transaction
With the trade deadline nearing, Castonguay makes her first major move as Flames GM:

TRADE:
Flames get:
RD Marco Scandella
2024 1st Round Pick (St. Louis)

Blues get:
C Elias Lindholm (Calgary retains 10% salary)
2024 6th Round Pick (Tampa Bay)
2024 5th Round Pick (Montreal)

Analysis:
Blues get a versatile power forward to add into their lineup for the playoffs. Calgary take on a 3 mil 1 year cap hit for Scandella, in exchange for a late 1st round pick in 2024.

OTL vs SJS (Feb 15)
A game where the blue line got quickly overrun by San Jose, Markstrom kept the Flames in the game for a long period of time. However, he could only do so much, with Tomas Hertl scoring in the 3rd minute of OT.

Transaction
Flames get a pending free agent off the books for a younger player who will continue AHL development next year.
New York Rangers get:
C Kevin Rooney, 30

Calgary Flames get:
LW Will Cuylle, 22

L 4-1 vs DET (Feb 17)
Another tough home game as the Flames look to see out the rest of the season without Lindholm. Markstrom struggles, despite a quieter night, only facing 25 shots.

Transaction
The Flames make two more extensions:
Jakob Pelletier - 1,058,750 AAV, 3 years
Cole Schwindt - 1,058,750 AAV, 3 years

W 5-2 vs WPH (Feb 19)
The first win in the post-Lindholm era of the Flames. Scandella is good but not great as he continues a small amount of early success with the Flames. Adam Ruzicka, Ben Jones and Mathias Emilio-Pettersen all have multi point nights.

L 8-5 vs BOS (Feb 22)
A high scoring battle goes the way of the Bruins. Pastranak proves to be the best player on the ice, as he achieves a 7 point night (with 5 goals). Flames keep the shot count close (38-35), but with none of the blue line really showing up, it's meaningless.

L 3-2 @ EDM (Feb 24)
Evander Kane stars in the Battle of Alberta. Mangiapane keeps it close with a powerplay goal and assist, but a Kane goal in the final minute of regulation causes the Flames to suffer another loss. Markstrom continues to be under a lot of pressure, facing 43 shots tonight.

SOW 4-3 vs LAK (Feb 27)
The Flames finish off feburary with a win, taking down playoff hopeful LA in a shootout. Calgary got off to a quick start with Huberdeau picking up a 3 point night within the first period. LA managed to claw back the three needed goals over the next two periods, but missing 2 penalty shots was enough to make them settle for the single point.

Transaction
With a number of solid defensive defensemen, the Flames choose to take a chance on former CBJ defenseman Adam Boqvist. The swede is a strong playmaker and shooter from the blue line, but is yet to put things together at the NHL level.

Additionally, Mikael Backlund has recovered from his injuries and moves back to the active roster:
To AHL: Marco Scandella, Jordan Oersterle (From NHL)
To NHL: Mickael Backlund (off IL), Jacob Pellietier (From AHL)

Calgary Stats
Goals - Huberdeau (20), Lindholm (17), Mangiapane (15), Ruzicka, Kadri (15)
Assists - Huberdeau (30), Weegar (24), Sharangovich (22), Mangiapane (20), Fix-Wolansky, Moser( 19)
Points - Huberdeau (50), Mangiapane (35), Lindholm (33), Ruzicka (32), Sharangovich (30)
PIM - Greer (33), Weegar (32), Moser (30), Mangiapane, Kadri (26)
Shots - Mangiapane (154), Huberdeau, Hanifin (151), Kadri (130), Weegar (121)
Hits - Weegar (107), Mangiapane (103), Greer (100), Coleman (98), Huberdeau (88)
Takeaways - Weegar (50), Moser, Lindholm (43), Huberdeau (39), Hanifin (38)
Blocks - Andersson (93), Weegar (78), Tanev (74), Moser (70), Lajoie (62)
FO% (min 5) -

Prospects
Jeremie Poirier (AHL) - 45 GP, 10G, 18A - With playoff hopes over, expect to see Poirier join the NHL roster soon to continue his development.

Dustin Wolf (AHL) - 32 GP, .903 SV%, 3.19 GAA - with more consistent outings as the season goes on, Calgary has made the decision to extend Dustin Wolf, though will start 2024 in the AHL.

Etienne Morin (QMJHL) - 35 GP, 12G, 24A - Morin will be coming into 24/25 contending for a place on a young blue line. Between him and Boqvist, next season's powerplay should likely be far more effective.

Trade Deadline Moves

Trade Deadline:

Toronto trades LW Max Domi (28) to Seattle for Eeli Tolvanen.

Analysis:
Moving older talent away to invest in the future makes sense for the beginning of the Bowman era in Toronto.

Washington trades C Hendrix Lapierre (22) to Minnesota for 2024 2nd Round Pick (MIN)

Analysis:
Minnesota gets a young player on the cusp of being NHL ready for a draft pick. While risky, this makes a lot of sense for a team going all in over the next couple of years. Washington get a 2nd round pick to help with the rebuild.

Seattle trades LW Max McCormick (31) to Seattle for Noah Gregor (25)

Analysis: Toronto confusingly parts with a young good forechecker for an older veteran. Seattle aquires a solid defensive player if they can sort out an extension.

Vegas trades their 2024 3rd Round Pick to Montreal for Phillie Maillet

Analysis: Vegas are all in on chasing the President's Trophy and a second cup. Parting with draft capital for a good low line player is more than worth it in their current state.

Minnesota trades Daemon Hunt (21) to CBJ for their 2024 3rd Round Pick

Analysis: With Hunt needing more time to polish his skills, Minnesota will likely use the draft pick to obtain a player closer to being NHL ready (or as part of a trade for the same).

Dallas trades their 2024 2nd Round Pick to Seattle for John Peterka

Analysis: With Dallas on the playoff cusp, Peterka may help them lift their fairly low scoring rate for this season, and many more to come.
