I would have understood if Snell had cited a physical issue ("I was feeling tired" or "my arm was starting to tighten up") even though pitchers used to endure those regularly. ("Here, have a cortisone shot. Don't forget to use the diathermy machine to loosen up before you go home. Remember, you're starting Monday*, so put some ice on there to prevent swelling.")
(*-Yes, Monday. Snell has five days of rest before his next start, with the Pads still theoretically alive, for now.) Even an indirect physical complaint ("my velocity was starting to drop") would count for something. But no, Snell was terrified for his health because of nothing but the number of pitches he had thrown. He was afraid of a number. Snell is of course a pending free agent, so I as well am scared of a number…the $30,000,000 or so in annual salary that some fool (such as the Mets' own Uncle Stevie) is likely to throw at him. I wish I could say I was disgusted by this, but as baseball gets dumber and dumber, I find myself getting number and number. Last edited by Amazin69; 09-20-2023 at 10:55 AM. |

I imagine the different networks have different ways of doing it, but they're also probably pretty similar.
I do know that Rogers Sportsnet at least definitely has different sized strike zone boxes for different batters (I wasn't sure so I figured I might as well check). I tested it by taking screenshots from MLB.com's Film Room of at bats by both Springer and Kirk (the tallest and shortest players on the Jays, 6'3 vs 5'8) from last night's Yankees game and it's very clear that the boxes are different sizes. I'll attach a png of the 2 with one layer at 50% opacity. In it you can clearly see the top of Kirk's box is at the bottom of the Yankee catcher's mask while the top of Springer's is in the middle of the catcher's mask. The camera angle is slightly different between the two PAs (when I toggled one layer off and on the mound would move a touch), but the amount it moves is nowhere near the difference of that of the difference between the boxes. One thing I'm positive about is the box you see is definitely not what the rules say it should be. For example, it's not uncommon to see the top of the zone belt high and the bottom well below the knee, like this. So I just look at it as a rough guide. And honestly, I'm not bothered by missed calls that are within like a ball width of the edge of what I think the zone should be. I'm only really bothered by calls that are way outside that, like a foot off. EDIT: Oops, nevermind the Jomboy stuff (I deleted it), totally different topic.

I should point out that, last I saw, SNY has yet to implement a box.
I'm in favor of this, obviously, but I have been accused of clinging to the past, so… |

KC's win & ATL loss has pulled Oak/KC into a tie w/the Braves for wins.

You can bet that none of those few seats will sell for under $100, at least at face value. Baseball for the wealthy and the corporate types. Why not a slightly larger building with some bleacher seats in the OF? Oh, wait, no one cares anymore about kids or families. Luxury suites and gourmet service cover those multi-year contracts.

Over the last 16 games, Atlanta’s rotation is 4-6 with a 6.87 ERA, allowing 86 hits and 59 walks in 77 1/3 innings. Wow. Regression to the mean at the wrong time. The Wild Card teams will be lining up to face that group in the second round.
I’m basically agnostic on the expanded playoffs. It’s long season, and little reward for playing well over 162 games. On the other hand, in any given year, there are more than six good teams out of thirty. And in most years, certainly this year, there are Division “winners” who are worse than second-place and even third-place teams. I’d take the Phillies over the Brewers or Cubs. Orioles/Rays over whoever wins the AL West by default. Better to inject revenue into team coffers by expanded playoffs, than boutique stadia with no cheap seats, IMHO. Necessary evil.

Why does that sound like "No health inspectors. Salmonella is part of the food industry."?

re: the Blake Snell stuff, the fact that the Padres were trying to win the game is specifically why there shouldn't have even been a consideration of letting him try to complete the game.

![]() Seriously, I used to be of mm's persuasion in this matter, but this is one area where I will yield to automation. It's too blatant now due to other technological advances. And, if it's any solace to mm, the ABS system will lend itself to fairness which is a very, very human concept. No basis in science of course; it really doesn't exist except in the human mind.

Looks like the Oakland Pathetics will play-dead away with the worst record after all. Now a ringing 46-106 to KC's snotty 51-102.

We cut out the time wasting, we kept the mashing. Perfect deal, and the ONLY rule change of the Numbfred Era of Horrors that I am on board with.
