Why do some players have Defensive Potentials at random positions, but not at all positions?

I'm confused about Positional Ratings. Why do some players seem to have caps on random positions and others have no caps? I guess it would be nice if that meant that there were no way in hell that the guy could play any position if he didn't have a cap listed. But it also feels proscriptive.

What am I misunderstanding? Shouldn't a player like Andrelton Simmons have the potential to play any damn position on the field?

Does it just show that the player happened to play any given position at some point in his history? Like, in the instance of my two catchers below, maybe they both pitched in high school for a year or something, and that makes the game think it needs to show a potential cap for Pitcher?

Someone brought this up in another thread recently. The player comparison screen will show potentials at positions even if players have no experience there.

You can see this happen in real time if you set scouting to 100% and go into the editor and start changing a players fielding ratings. The comparison screen will change. It seems like there are certain hard cutoffs for ratings before they will show a potential though, like having an arm rating below 60 won't show SS, or below 70 won't show 3B, etc.

The player profile screen will never show a position until they actually have accrued enough experience playing a position to give them a rating there.

You are putting up screenshots of two different pages. I you go into the player comparison page with Andrelton Simmons, you will surely see that he has a potential rating for every position except catcher.

In the player ratings page, they only list defensive position ratings for positions in which the player has at least one game of experience.

Unless they're really lousy defensively, it may take numerous games before they get a rating.

That all makes sense. Wish it was explained a little better, but that's what the forums are for, I guess.

This guy doesn't have the range to play 2nd or shortstop so he will never get ratings there. You could still play them in those positions as a late inning defensive replacement, I guess, but do so at your own risk. The outfield is a similar situation: left doesn't require the raw range that center and right do and this guy doesn't qualify.

Sure, I know all that type of thing, I was only wondering why it showed expanded defensive potentials in the comparison screen But not in the profile. Didn’t make a lot of sense to me, but now I know that it’s that way by design.
