How Do I Remove Pure Black Color From Images?

I find it completely bizarre that OOTP does not properly import the color of pure black when using logos and other images. But how in the world am I supposed to remove pure black from the bitmaps that I want to use? I have Paint Shop Pro, but there doesn't seem to be any feature that would allow me to convert all pixels of a particular color to a different one.

I think I stumbled upon the solution. I edited the palette for my image and found what appeared to be pure black. I simply changed the RGB values to 1 and now it seems to work okay. I'll test my other images and see how it goes.

You might want to change the RGB values to 10, or even 20. A few of my logo sets had problems on other people's systems, even with the values set at 10.

If you have Photoshop, you can just adjust the levels, which is what I do now.

PSP has a color replace feature that can change the 0,0,0 black color to 0,0,1. The color is still black to the normal eye, but OOTP will no longer treat the cell as transparent. The color replacer area size is adjustable, so you can plick it on a 150x150 bitmap ootp logo and it will instantly replace all instances of 0,0,0.

I think hot pink (fushia) would be better as the transparent colour. Who would use hot pink for baseball graphics? Or maybe that ugly yellowy green colour that I think only females like.

Those are both colors that EA Sports have used as their transparent colors over the last 10 years. I suggested this for OOTP way back during version 2 but at the time there was some reason given why it was important to use the black 0,0,0 color as OOTP's transparent color. Can't recall if the reason was valid or just a fanboy response to the complaint. Shurg.

Hi, I actually use Photoshop for our Games, but in PaintShop there might be a function to manipulate only intensity of the darker colors. That way your images wonīt lose too much intensity.
In PS the "color replace" is, like Killebrew saied, a very good tool.
To avoid transparancies accidently I use R:10 G:10 B:10, instead of black. That color will work on every sytem.
Btw. ITP is using pink for transparencies (really didnīt want that color to appear anywhere in the game ;-) ), and later versions of OOTP will too. So donīt get frustrated!

Aurelio,

Thanks for stoppin' by!

Have you given any though to adding support for PNGs? That way, we can just create an actual transparency, rather than messing about with "absolute black" and RGB levels?

I bring this up because I have personal experience showing that what works on one system doesn't necessarily work on another:

Heck, even GIF support would be OK.

Left side of PSP (the tool palette) about half way down - its called the color replacer. Use the 0,0,0 black as the foreground color (right side of PSP - the color palette) and whatever new color as the background color - I suggest 0,0,1 black - that works with the OOTP series. It takes a minute to figure it uot - the color replacer tool is not super user friendly, basically it just decides the size, shape and density of the color replacing, while the actual color choices are done in the color palette. Good luck!

Why not just use the magic wand to select problem areas then kick up the brightness a bit?

The palette adjustment is much faster. It only takes me maybe 15 seconds to convert the file to 256K colors, then edit the palette and remove the pure black.

Note that the color replacer feature will take about a second per image if you set the target size to 150x150 or bigger.

Yeah, weīve been thinking about that. PNG really has many advantages. Weīll change to this format probably in later versions too, but canīt promise when ;-). Itīs mainly a matter of programming. So canīt say much about it
