General Tips For Gameplay

Hello everyone, I just finished watching the franchise deep dive and it had me thinking about the new in game analytics and the new in game animations. In the past and for OOTP 23, I usually simulate a season a day and I'm not really the kind of person who goes through every single game. This year I think that might change; the improvements make me want to play every single game, but I have wondered about what has others done to make the gameplay seem fun. I'm more into simulation because I was always bored of just playing the games and I don't mean like I'm dissing the developers, but I mean like eventually I would get tired and go back to simulating a season every day. The new in game features will make the game more fun but are there any strategies anybody follows to make everything more interesting? The in-game analytics help to know where the hitter may hit to but all of these new features sort of answers my question. I have always been a simulation only person so I don't know much about putting in the right pitchers during a jam for example, or whether it would benefit me to put all left-handed hitters versus a right-handed pitcher. What do you guys follow to succeed in OOTP?

The first thing I do is change the animation speed to very fast, and I would also turn off between pitch animation where the pitcher walks around the mound.
Remember you are the manager, not a spectator. As far as strategy each team is different. Know your player's ratings and figure out from there if you should platoon him or not. Decide what type of manager you want to be, but make sure your roster matches. for example, you can't play mall ball if you can't run bunt, etc. Have a team with a couple of favorite players.
I hope that helps.

Keep your leagues small... that way you learn the players and can get more immersed... I have a 64-team league with 8 divisions and 2 subleagues... it is much too big to follow and recap each season on my OOTP dynasty report... I sim the regular season and play out the playoffs game.

I have been doing my Islandian Pro Alliance league for 15 years... real time... started it in 2007... so attached psychologically, I can't just stop doing it... once I reach 100 seasons, that will be it... in in the 77th season this year.

I also have a 16-team league, the South Island Supreme League and the South Island Secondary League... two leagues with promotion and relegation... it is more enjoyable because I can learn the players and teams... I play out each game in this league... the small league is much easier to cover in its dynasty report.

This league is like semi-pro league and only plays on Sunday... only 15-man rosters and is a short season league.

I don't use minors leagues... I use reserve rosters for both leagues.

I will never play another large league.

Or pick a team you already like so you will have an attachment to. Most of all have fun.

I know what you mean, my current OOTP 23 game has expanded way past 30 MLB teams. I don't even know how many teams are in the league now but to go into more detail, I haven't made the playoffs in a long time because my division is like ten teams long.

I have three fictional leagues that have 60 teams.

While I don't know every major player in the league, I keep a lot of stats OOTP doesn't supply and also keep track with accomplishments and milestones.

That plus creating my own logos, jerseys, caps and schedules keeps me attached to them - I simply put way too much work into this to give up on it and start something new

The other way besides keeping things small is to take your time. I think I’m now at a point where I finish around 2 years for every real season. This year it might have only been one. I also control every single team in a 24 team league so I’ve got a really great idea of who’s who and so on. The development engine is well done and fun and all but you can also experience it on a day to day, “is this a slump or is this guy just old/washed” basis.

I usually start with the Cubs because that's my favorite team, and I play real world, current season, I like to play game by game, and as the season progresses, I'll start to sim parts of the game. Once the team I'm simming is 5 games out of the WC I'll typically sim 1/2 inning at a time until I've simmed 5 innings, 6 games out, 6 innings, 7 games out, 7 innings and so forth. Once I'm 9 or more games out I'll still set the lineup, then sim the entire game. The exception is if I feel like my starting pitcher needs to come out I'll change pitchers myself and then I'll sim when my team is batting but play when pitching just to keep my eye on my pen guys. Once it gets to 9 games out, I just sim the whole game. If my team is in the playoff race all season, when I play teams that are 5+ games behind me in the standings I'll do the same thing as above.

Game by game keeps me interested in the stories of the season, lets me pay closer attention to my minor league system, and keeps me engaged strategically. Often times I'll switch teams if/when I get bored with my current sim. I'll look for the team with the best minor league system, or I'll pick the team that is in the worst financial shape with the worst system and try to fix that.

I also enjoy historical sims, which I typically do when actual baseball season is over. My favorite sims are taking over the Cubs in 1941 before WW2, just so some of the stars get their entire careers, or I'll take over an expansion team in their first season. I also like starting in 1977 because that was when I started collecting baseball cards or I'll start in 84, the Cubs first playoff season of my lifetime, or later in the 80's to get Maddux/Grace and Sandberg all on the same team.

Lots of ways to do it, that's what I enjoy the most. I'm also kind of a strategy/stats geek though.

Maybe don't make this mistake......
My sim took me in a crazy direction.....I bought OOTP23 a year ago and upgraded to OOTP24. I played another game since the late eighties with all seasons played up to 2022. But OOTP was so much better!!! So, I went back to 2018 to start the replay, but realized I need more history, so I kept thinking where I would start, then I started in 1984!!! Now I just finished 1988, regular MLB with all minor leagues and all human management but play against the AI in games. So, my goal is to get to 2024 soon, but it took me a year to get five seasons, so I may be pretty old by the time I get to 2024 (or 20xx!) But it is so fun to see the game move from season to season and deal with everything. The people who made this game great should be honored in Cooperstown!!
