The ref pool seems like a better answer than the QB pool TBH, especially given how amazingly awful the scabs were back in 2014(?). Even there, I feel like the best option here is for the NFL to professionalize them a bit harder, like allow/make them call high school and college games during the season. It's not quite the part time job it was 30 years ago but it's still IMO too close to being one.

To me, the ref pool is not that big of a deal if they hired younger. I've said it a 1000x's. Men my age, men 10-15 yrs younger than my age, should not be officials in the NFL/NBA/NHL. This is a young man's game that should have young men that can keep up with them officiating it.

Looking at a list of questionable calls, etc., by the 2012 replacement (no name-calling from me) refs, IMO it looks quite similar to what a list of any random three weeks of questionable calls would look like now. I mean, there were clearly some procedural stuff that happened with maybe a little more frequency than we would see from the current crop of NFL refs. But those would be expected, as even the most competent and NFL-worthy rookie ref would need adequate preparation to move into the management of an NFL game. In addition, these procedural issues - like the incorrect awarding of add'l timeouts or challenges - are the types of things that should have been corrected in real time with guidance from the replay booth and/or the alternate officials that were on the sidelines to assist (just like those that are in place to assist for playoff games.)
There were likely around 115 replacement refs who worked a total of 48 games (16 games per week x 7 refs per game = 112 needed). So a very strong case can be made that the overwhelming majority of replacement refs did a solid job... or at least as solid of a job as regular NFL refs. Sports media mirrors the regular media in the positions they take on hot-button issues, and labor relations in sports is covered no differently. (Without delving into politics, let's just say that sports media typically takes sides that are more popular in California or Massachusetts, rather that the position that would be hailed in Texas or Wyoming ). On this case, those opinions come from a very pro-worker & anti-management position. So it would be incredibly naive to think that slanted coverage - and the high-profile but also-biased opinions of pro-worker NFL players - didn't contribute to public perception of the replacement refs. (Especially when you consider that the default for sports fans is typically "the refs suck!")Take that as indictment of full-time refs, or defense of the replacement refs. Either could apply, I suppose. Quote:

W/Tua and tonight, there is going to be a lot of talk this offseason about health concerns in football. Even if tonight isn't concussion related.
Even though on the replay it looked like just a potential concussion, you could tell the way the trainers reacted this was more that that. They reacted quickly. Like a controlled panic.

I would really be surprised if this game is finished.

I hope the league is aware enough to know playing football is the least thing anyone should be doing tonight.
All the "he would want us to play" is out of the window right now.

ESPN reports hospital said they anticipate no updates tonight. So I would gather that means he is alive and somewhat stabilized. That is pure guesswork on my part

What's alarming is how long did his brain go without oxygen? He wasn't breathing on his own, and as far as I know, still isn't.

It's pretty straight forward. Seahawks and Lions win, Seahawks are in.

My guess is they resume the game on Thursday night as no more Thursday night games are scheduled. Just a guess on my part. Now that the injured player is under care, they would want to resume as soon as they can. I haven't heard anything announced, yet.

I'm thinking they are just cancelling it. It is going to be tough enough to lace em up on Sunday. I think we'll all live if the final standings & stats aren't uniform.

The NFL hasn't canceled a regular season game since the 1987 players strike. They haven't canceled one for non-labor dispute reasons since 1935. When Chuck Hughes died on the field in 1971 the game was completed as normal.

Yeah, that was 1971. This is 2023. Things change.
Thursday wouldn't be fair to either team because they'd have to turn around and play again on Sunday. It's too bad so many playoff related things hang on them finishing that game.

Within hours of his hospitalization, a toy drive led by Hamlin’s charitable foundation had received more than $3 million via a crowdfunding website.

Also there was only a minute left in the game and by all news accounts both teams were just going through the motions after Hughes was carted off.
I'm just noting that there is precedent for this kind of situation. |
