I'm not sure if I was a betting person I would bet on the USA to outright win against Iran. If Iran beat Wales and we only tied.

Well, we should have beaten Wales, but we gave 2 of the 3 points away.

Walker Zimmerman, who gave away the penalty against Wales, gave away the late free kick that Kane nearly headed home. Perhaps Berhalter might consider subbing him off next game? If this was OOTP, his "stamina" rating would definitely be yellow when we need green.

Wow, news media are calling the U.S. dominant in that match and probably disappointed that they didn't come away with a win.

HOWEVER…I'm so sick of hearing "all we have to do is beat Iran". Yeah, and all Iran has to do is draw. That's a huge advantage, especially as we're not overloaded with scoring.

And I'm old enough to remember the Iranians basically dancing on our graves in 1998 because they were motivated by their hatred of the global bully from the decade before. Perhaps things are different now, but it's not as if American Imperialism is a dead issue for the rest of the world. They could still be especially motivated because of our using Iraq as a proxy to attack them for most of the 1980s.

Speaking of how old I am, it's scary to think that Claudio Reyna's son is now the USNT's wunderkind. I can remember when Claudio himself was the new sensation who was going to lead us to the next level. Sigh.

Off to read the UK papers and laugh at how much they must be crying. Even if we might be going home on Tuesday.

As for the tournament in general, of the 20 games played so far, half of them have been scoreless at halftime. Action, action, we got action!!

This was "only" the fifth match to end nil-nil, though. So you've got a 75% chance of seeing a goal. What more do you want for your 2 hours' time, I ask?
England trashed, and I mean TRASHED Iran, and we played England dead level. I like our chances.

This is absurd. The US played a good game, England clearly did not play their best game.

I think if the US and England were to play ten games, the US would get two wins, two draws, and six losses.

I wouldn't say we were dominant. We played better this game but not dominantly. We could have easily lost if the ball had bounced differently a few places.

FWIW, U.S. must win to advance, whereas (if my math is correct), Iran only needs a tie to move on...

They are saying this could have been the game winner, but I also remember an English header near the end of the match that missed only by a few degrees of neck swivel.

Iran got blown out by England though wheras we tied them. So this really feels like a tossup to me.

You also played Wales to a draw and Wales was clearly outplayed by Iran today.

Agreed. I still favor the US in their match with Iran.

I’ve watched US mens soccer since the 90s and it doesn’t matter the roster, they always play the same- boring and usually draw. They had 0 urgency today, in a game they needed to win. If they manage to beat Iran I’d be surprised.

I'm not sure I agree with this. They were playing agianst one of the best teams in the world, and we're the youngest team in the tournament. If you're the Houston Texans you don't just pass the ball every down against the Buffalo Bills.

Ummm...England beat Iran by four goals, and we tied England.

Goes both ways.

So the first half of today's slate of game was equal parts meh and rustic.

I hope Argentina shows something, although it'll be hard for both my favorites Argentina and Mexico to advance out of that group now.

Poland 4 +2
Saudi Arabia 3 -1
Mexico 1 0
Argentina 0 -1

Two Argentina wins and a Mexico win against Saudi Arabia might work.

It will be difficult for the US because all Iran needs is a draw.

If they both needed a win, I think the US would win. But only needing a draw changes everything.

If Iran scores first, call it. It's over. If the match is even at the half, expect Iran to play mostly defense. The hope is that the US gets out in front in the first half. That's the best chance.

The New York Times ran this cool 3D schematic of the Weston McKennie play, another great opportunity for U.S. to have won the match. Oil your middle mouse wheel!

Yep. That was in the first half. That was the best chance we had to score. The entire left side of the net was open.
