Help Me Name My New League's Teams

I'm already pretty happy with most of my league's team names, but I'm expanding and I don't have any names for a number of the new teams. And many of the others I would consider changing if someone came up with something better. I have a few theme preferences, for this league at least: pirate, wild west, and animals. As you can see, I prefer names you don't often see and I like names that refer to something in the city's history.

EDIT: I removed the names I do have to elicit more ideas.

New SubLeague

North Eastern Division

Atlanta
Virginia Beach
Charlotte
Arlington, VA

North Eastern Florida Division

Orlando
Jacksonville
Palm Bay
Port St. Lucie

North Central Division

Memphis
Nashville
Birmingham
Jackson

North Texas Division

Dallas
San Antonio
Austin
Oklahoma City

Original SubLeague

South Eastern Division

Charleston
Savannah
Wilmington
Myrtle Beach

South Western Florida Division

Miami
Tampa Bay
North Port
Sarasota
Cape Coral
-I'll only go with North Port or Sarasota, but I'm leaving both for input.

South Central Division

New Orleans
Pensacola
Mobile
Gulfport

South Texas Division

Houston
Corpus Christi
Rio Grande (it's an area team, Brownsville-McAllen)
Beaumont

Palm Bay Phoenix (the Phoenix is, more familiarly, the date palm).

I liked the Renegades idea until I realized I think Arlington in this case is Virginia, not Texas. Not sure either name applies to the northern Virginia area.

As someone that works in Arlington VA (when not teleworking), here are my favorites for a NoVa team: The Old Virginia Blues and Green Valley Quick Steps (both early black teams from Arlington VA). You lose the "Arlington" city prefix, but it adds some flair to the league, methinks...

For Orlando don't name it after this but the twitter comments on the proposed logo for the MLB Expansion Orlando team were too funny not to share.

Yeah, originally I had Alexandria, but when I looked into the DC metro area it seemed like Arlington actually had more population. One might ask, why not go with DC? Well, originally I wanted this to be a southern coastal only league (other than OKC, I've never been to any of these cities so I'm kind of fascinated by them) and Virginia is about as north as I'm willing to take it. The original league only went as north as Wilmington, NC, but if I wanted to expand it, which I did, it seemed to make only sense to at least creep into a few more states. I know, it's not realistic for such small cities to compete with cities like Miami and Dallas, but whatever, it's an independent league.

Anyway, in googling Arlington, I found it pretty interesting. I always thought the shape of DC was curious, but then I found out that it was once a diamond! Or a square on a corner if you prefer. Arlington and Alexandria were ceded to DC and people were okay with that because they thought their property values would increase, but there were slavery, funding, and voting rights issues and so their economy instead stagnated and they decided to retrocede back to VA! Huh. I love learning stuff like that.

Thanks to Brad K's input in another thread, I'm probably going to change North Port to Sarasota. I updated the OP.

I remember seeing that when it came out. Besides the amateurish logo, I thought the name was even worse. A logo will probably change, a name is less likely to. I imagine I'm not the only one who thought, "you're dreaming, old man". He looked so pathetic. He should have at least had a couple people standing with him. He should have asked for some opinions on the name and logo before the press conference too. I wonder if someone gave him some feedback and he just didn't bother to act on it.

What are some current team names that if they didn't already have a long history that we would react negatively to now? I've always disliked both the Red Sox and White Sox names. I also don't care for the Twins and Phillies names. It helps knowing the history of the choice, but not much.

Los Angeles Trolley Dodgers is right up there with the Utah Jazz! Or the LA Lakers for that matter. LA was ground zero for the death of streetcars and obviously the water situation makes Lakers dumb as dumb can be.

Anyway, what ended up the Ft. Myers Miracle started in Miami, so that would be something different. I've used the Tropics from Will Ferrell's terrible movie Semi_Pro for various FL teams too.

Re Arlington, I love "Old Dominion" as a team name for Virginia teams, but it's also a college name so maybe that's a turnoff. I had no idea it was originally lumped into DC.

One of the features of the city of Wilmington NC is the storied USS North Carolina.

https://www.history.navy.mil/researc...0the%20Pacific

Her enduring nickname... "Showboat". If MLB expands, I'm going to win the mail-in contest upon the introduction of the Wilmington Showboats. The logo ain't no riverboat, it's the pride of the US Navy, a battleship.

I feel one of the South Carolina teams needs to be the "Swamp Fox". Not Foxes, but leaving the "x" like Red Sox. Hero of South Carolina and the American Revolution...

Also, do you realize how distracting this thread is with Google just sitting open in front of me when I should be working :P

For Miami, I always just grab the city connect uniforms and go Sugar Kings...
