New user Scheduling/Playoffs/Restart League questions

Hello all....

Brand new to OOTP, and I've created a fictional league, and got it set up, mostly, the way I wanted it .

What I couldn't get set up is the schedule I wanted. I have an 8 team league, and want to play a 70 game schedule, where each team plays every other team 10 times (a balanced schedule). When setting up the league, I was able to set the schedule to 70 games, but instead of scheduling each other team 10 times, I got several teams playing others 12 times, and others only 9. Is there a way to get what I want?

Also, I want a playoff format where the top 4 teams make the playoffs (1 v 4 and 2 v 3) in a 2 tiered system--best of 3 followed by a championship of best of 5. However, during setup, with Division Winners plus Wild Cards selected, I am unable to change the number of Wildcards from 1. What am I missing?

Lastly, should I be able to modify those settings above, I'd like to restart my league, rather than deleting it and recreating it all over from the beginning. How would I do that?

Thanks,

Tony

You're lucky. I didn't think that schedule would exist as it's quite odd, but it does!

You can always check the schedule list if the game doesn't give you what you want.

And I just tested your playoff setup and it looks like it works fine. You are using the custom playoffs editor, correct?

Thanks for responding! It's good to know that I can get the schedule and playoff formats, but......

#1, if I'm reading the schedule link properly, it's 2 five-game series against every other team (home and home). What I was hoping for was a 3-game and a 2-game series (home and home).

Even so, I'm not sure how to use the linked file. I'm guessing I need to place it in the correct folder, and then somehow choose it within the game?

#2. Customs playoff editor? Where is that at?

Keep in mind, I am literally a complete newb. Just bought this on Sunday.

Also, assuming I can get these implemented (and THANKS AGAIN, for letting me know)....can I restart my league? If so, how?

Go into league settings and it has options. The right column at the bottom has playoff options. You can do the default division winners only or division winners and wild cards. Those default options are for balanced playoffs (2, 4, 8, 16, etc.). There's a box above you can select custom playoffs there.

If you are having trouble downloading the schedule there is a way to generate the schedule you are looking for in game. Neither option is better than a hand created schedule but here is a solution.

Go to game settings/League settings/options. Under select typical series length if you change it to 2 the game can generate a schedule where each team plays the other 10 times. However, it won't make it an even 5 home and 5 away model. That odd game messes things up. If you set the typical series length to 5 games you will get exactly what you want in theory. Problem is you get 5 game series which are not typically popular. In either set up your league (if started in early April) will be done by June. Which is probably something else you don't want.

Whatever default schedule the game creates, you can change it anyway you want by going to {your league name menu}->League Settings->Edit League Schedule. Each day of the schedule is listed separately, with each game of each day. Say there is a five-game series of New York at Boston and you want to make it three, just go to the days of the fourth and fifth games, and in the entry for each game click Delete Game. Then on the bottom left you can add games; just make sure Select Game Type is set to Regular Season Game. You can make these changes as long as your game is between the dates of Preseason Begins and Spring Training Begins. You can also customize schedules by importing and exporting .lsdl files, but I would get my feet wet in the game before I tried that.

Hey guys, thanks for the help! I've been able to find and modify y playoff structure!!!

As for the schedule, what I'd really like is Home/Home, 5 games against every other team, but I really DON'T want a 5 game series. What I'd really like is a 3 game series and then 2 game series at each location.

In looking at the downloaded schedule, it looks like I can figure out how to get what I want by modifying it. A little work, but I may be willing to put the time in. The one I downloaded also has no All-Star Break/Game, but I was thinking I would add that in as well, if I edit it.

As for ending in June, that's ok with me. Actually, I may start the season a little later, to push back the ending date.

Still not sure how to apply the schedule from within the game, and once I find that, how do I restart my league?
EDIT: Found that with JudgeGio's help!, but it can only be modified prior to Spring Training, which I've already started).

So, is there a way to restart my league, so that I can apply the schedule I want, or do I have to start from scratch?

Thanks again for all the help.

Tony

This has been my trick for years. I create a 162 game schedule and then I just delete games down until I have what I want. I have dozens of uniques schedules I have created over the years.

Well, I was planning to say that you're in luck, because the game already comes with a schedule that fits your format. But when I tested it in the game, it wouldn't load. Turns out, it has a problem that affects a lot of one-league schedules - the game doesn't recognize the file name. So I modified it and have attached the file to this post. Download the linked file and move it to your schedules folder. Then follow these steps:
  1. Under the Game menu go to League Settings;
  2. In the League Settings menu choose Edit League Schedule;
  3. Go to the Actions pull-down menu (upper right) and choose Import From File;
  4. Scroll down and click on the following file name: ILN_BGY_G70_SL1D1T8_C_T8
The schedule will automatically load and you should be good to go. As JudgeGio noted, you can only load a new schedule during the pre-season (before spring training). Looks like all the series are two or three games.

ILN_BGY_G70_SL1D1T8_C_T8.lsdl

Edit: In looking at the schedule a bit more closely, it appears that it was an attempt to make something akin to a nineteenth-century schedule. So a lot of off-days, a lot of long road trips and homestands, and the games all start at 3:05. That may not be what you want, but at least it will be a lot easier to edit it into something that you do want.

I downloaded the schedule this morning and dropped the file in my schedules folder in '23. However, when I attempt to import the schedule it is not listed as an option. Do you know of any reason why the game won't read it now?

EDIT!! I fixed my problem. For anyone that cared I downloaded the file correctly to my '23 schedules folder but when I went to import the schedule in game it was looking at my '21 schedule folder. It was the folder I had used last because I had a bunch of hand created schedules in there. Spent a half hour trying to figure this out. So I'm posting to save other the time. (insert facepalm)

Again, thanks for the replies everyone!

What I really am looking for at this point is HOW to restart my league. With the couple of schedules posted here, I am able to get the schedule I want (still thinking I may just modify one of the others to get me exactly what I want).

But....

Since I've already started Spring Training (in fact, I am up to the last day), I cannot load that schedule.

So, I have 3 choices:
1. Figure out how to restart my league (this is the optimal choice...and no, I did not create backup prior to starting Spring Training).
2. Play the season out using the schedule the game generated for me (to get close to what I wanted, I had to go with an 84 game schedule). I really don't think I'm going to do this, now that I know I can get what I want using a different schedule.
3. Delete my league and recreate from scratch, this time changing the schedule before I start Spring Training. I think this is the option I'll end up doing if there is no way to restart the league.

Thanks again!

Been there, done that

Of course, you already had this schedule in your version 21 folder too. That's the aggravating thing. It wouldn't load for me as written because it has this header:
SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G70_SL1_D1_T8_C_"
Maybe that worked in past versions, but now the game doesn't like single-league schedules that contain sub-league and divisional information in the header. So the only way I could get it to work was to change the header to this:
SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G70_T8"
This isn't an isolated problem - I've run into it before. And it's very frustrating because the game keeps saying that the league structure doesn't match the schedule, when, in fact, it does. It just doesn't match the way the game now interprets the schedule files

I wish in the schedule editor it would list next to the team the game # that it's playing.

I make daily changes(200 plus team leagues) to the schedule and it's easy if you aren't careful to have teams play over the schedule limit.
