I am eager to see how things like Shifting, and other things in the Strategic Tendencies, impacts results compared with 22.

I think playing with reflection can be problematic with a sim like this anyway since a thing that was imbedded into the game somewhere - that tiny clutch ability that the devs insisted they added somewhere - can be so small that it’s essentially undetectable. So yeah, I think you really have to regression test instead.

The findings are really interesting and I’m not sure they necessarily ruin the game…

[spoiler]Not sure I’m on board with gap power being a straight up “xbh per at bat” thing; I see high-power low average guys with otherwise not terrible Gap ratings with very low double numbers. I was thinking these were just getting swamped by the 3TO but this is in a lower K environment. Luck might be a factor but I think luck only goes so far. I’ll be interested to see if that holds up.

I also know that the game calculates the 3TO before anything else but if walks eat into HRs then… actually that’s not necessarily ahistorical. I’ve been reading these scouting report books from the 80s and a common refrain on players like Mike Schmidt is that they walk too much for their power. This was also a common complaint of Ted Williams. I think the attitude has mostly died because we realized that walks are really, really valuable, but I think a very selective hitter is often a guy who will forgo pitches over his part of the plate on certain counts, and it’s interesting to see that that is reflected in the game itself.

It’ll be interesting to see how much of this holds up with the rewrite of the simulation engine.

I have another one on pitching mechanics pinned to my profile. Once this game releases I will make more in depth posts covering both and post them to reddit. I can post them here as well if people are interested in it. The big tool I need to spend some time setting up is carving out is a play-by-play file converter so I can do more in depth analysis on situational effects on outcomes. Situations dictate outcomes to such a high degree that I need dramatic sample sizes to measure effects.
Can you parse out INSIDE The park homeruns with your method?
I assume 23 does not track inside the park homeruns, sacrifice attempts, bunt for hit attempts, bunt hits etc.

Just wanted to thank you for these posts and the others you've made on Reddit. I've really enjoyed them and learned a lot about how the game works.

Yeah, honestly, and I say this as a person who works with current/potential ratings turned off, I really enjoy these discussions, in part because it's very clear that the way the game generates results is not something that you can boil down to a simple formula/algorithm. There are lots and lots of individual factors that go into each at-bat and it does appear that *everything*, from the weather to park effects and even to pull rate and player morale (I believe that's a small factor but pretty sure it's there), whether the player is in a slump or a hot streak, and even even to added fatigue the player has built up during a game (not just pitchers I don't think). There is so much "noise" that a lot of the work folks like turtle4499 or the since banned CBeisbol have done can really only be accomplished by simming out 10 or 100 seasons at a time.

This is just straight up not a game like SOM where you can just look at a player card and get an instant understanding of how they're going to perform...

He was incredibly annoying. Kept bringing up political arguments. After a while, enough was enough.
