I think Honus was also just a funky, German spelling of "Hans", which was his "nickname" (read: his actual name) throughout his career.
Yogi's real name of course was not Yogi; he got the nickname because he was into yoga at a time when it was just considered weird and not a thing suburban housewives all over the country did on Saturday mornings. Also, lest anyone forget, Connie Mack's actual name was Cornelius MacGillicuddy. His regular name sounds like a bad guy from a cartoon and you can totally see why he went with the shortened version. I don't know what people would do with it today; then, I find it hard to conceive of a person born in the last 50 years with the name "Cornelius". Also also, can't believe we haven't mentioned the Hargrave brothers: Bubbles and Pinky. Pinky was a name you gave angry players back then (because he had the "red ass", another saying that's been lost to history) and Bubbles... had a stuttering problem. "Hey, bub-bub-buddy-" "lol your name is bubbles now". Man, the 1930s were not nice...

"I've always had a soft spot for Hack Wilson. I love the nickname "Hack" for a batter. He was short, even for back then, and yet he was a power hitting CF. Apparently he had quite the personality ".
There's a pretty cool (and pretty common) photo of Hack Wilson signing an autograph for Al Capone's kid.....with Big Al looking on. |

In my Random League a Moses Yellow Horse just showed up so I had to find out more about him. First full blooded Native American in MLB. Played just a couple years until he injured his arm (supposedly fell down after a few drinks and hurt his arm). As a youngster, he would hunt animals with small stones for his family to eat.

I got to add Levi Meyerle to the list, simply because he rocked in my save and was the first player to get into the HoF
