Uh oh

Greetings. I'm using TBCB2.5 on Win10 and the game seems to have crashed on me, and won't come back up. It all started when I was installing fighters I'd downloaded off the mods forum and the game froze. It was greyed out and I was offered the option to close it or wait for it to respond. I waited a while and then allowed it to close.

Only problem is when I tried to reopen the game, I got the following error message:
The required file, 'divisions.dat' cannot be opened in C:\my name\documents\Out of the Park Developments\Title Bout Championship Boxing 2.5\SavedGames\All World Boxing Organization (that's the name of the boxing universe I was working on).

I click OK and then get an error message that reads as follows:
Error: loading database failed

Then I click OK again and get the following error message:
Loading of database All World Boxing Organization Failed!

So what am I supposed to do now? Is there any way that my boxing uni can be saved? Is the game I just bought a few months ago even still playable?

Look in C:\my name\documents\Out of the Park Developments\Title Bout Championship Boxing 2.5\SavedGames\All World Boxing and see if you have a folder named "backup" followed by some numbers like "backup_2021_12_13__14_24_02". The numbers are a date and time stamp. Within that folder should be about 20 files. Copy the divisions file from there and paste it in C:\my name\documents\Out of the Park Developments\Title Bout Championship Boxing 2.5\SavedGames\All World Boxing. You may need to replace other files from the backup in a similar fashion.

A moderator should probably sticky this advice someplace.

@pilight, thank you so much! I do have those backup files (though there are only 10 of them. Should there be more?)! I've put months of work into downloading fighters from the mods section of this forum and was only beginning to install them - which means my boxing uni in 2.5 is still not off the ground. It would have been a terrible blow to me to lose all that work because the game crashed before I could even get it off the ground.

If you haven't run any fights yet then you'll have fewer files.

Saving often is recommended with all versions of TBCB.

Yeah, I probably haven't been saving as much as I should. You know when everything runs smoothly for days or weeks at a time, it becomes the last thing you think of. And yes, I haven't run any fights yet. Been too busy setting up my boxing universe with all the fighters I want in it. Anyway, thanks again.

@pilight, I did what you told me. The game then decided it couldn't read cornermen. So I copied and pasted that file in, and then it gave me another error message. Now it's saying:

Fatal Error! Error reading .dat file! Program terminated.

So what do I do now? copy and paste all the files in, instead of just the division file?

Okay so I did that and now the problem is one file it doesn't like - nations.dat. So I copied that file from a backup and pasted it into saved games. I told it to over right the existing nations.dat file, but it still can't read nations.dat, which means it won't load the game. Any suggestions now?

There's a similar problem with solution in this thread

Thank you again, I just went to the thread you linked and posted there. One thing though:

Now there's only one file that won't load, which is nations.dat.,. and it still won't load even when I go into the saves and copy it from there. I'm thinking that that means the file is corrupted, does that make sense to you?

I would think if it was corrupted before you saved it would have crashed then.

You say you only have 10 files in your backup? Even without running fights there should be more than that. What files do you have?

No I misspoke. I only have 10 backup folders , but I have the full compliment of files in each one. The problem, at this point, isn't files not being there; it's the game being unable to read one of them (nations.dat). I've tried pulling the file from different, earlier backup folders, but it can't read it no matter what I do. Now I'm by no means a techie, bit it seems to me that what might work for me would be to delete nations.dat entirely and install a clean one, sent to me by someone on this forum, who isn't having this problem. Does that sound like it makes sense to you?

It might work. Have you made any changes to the default nations?

Title Bout only keeps the last 10 saves of each universe.

No I haven't made any changes in the default nations, though I have added fighters in some tiny, obscure nations that aren't exactly boxing hotbeds, and one or two fictional fighters who don't have a nation listed. But that shouldn't cause a problem with the nations.dat file, should it?

btw I have 17 files in each of 10 game saves. That seems about right, being that the nations file is the only thing the game is trying to read and having a problem with, but you tell me, should there be more than that?

17 sounds right. Announcers, Cornermen, Divisions, Fighters, Fighters2Groups, Groups, Judges, Languages, Nations, Organizations, Players, RatingRecords, Referees, RingCardGirls, Rules, TBDatabase, Venues.

I've never added a fictional fighter without a nation, so I don't know what effect that would have

Well I'm pretty sure the fictional fighters didn't cause any ill effects. I downloaded them from Bear's thread of fictional fighters which has been up in the mods section of this board for years, and I've never heard of it causing any problems for anyone else.

So anyway, this sounds like a corrupted file, right? The nations.dat file must be corrupted to behave the way it is, based on what I know of such matters. So what do you suggest now? Would defragging my drive help? Or should I just try and replace the bad file?

There are occasional fighter files that crash the game. Felix Savon was a bugaboo for a long time. Also a fighter created with a value outside the range of a rating can cause a crash. In particular there were some with a 0 in Killer Instinct that caused problems.

Bear briefly mentioned some issues here:

Well Bear's thread of fictional fighters has been up long enough that if it were causing problems in running the game, I'm pretty sure it would be a well known fact by now. In any event, what I need is to figure out how to get the game to read the nations.dat file so it will run again. I tried running scandisk, defrag and chdsk in order to let Win10 fix it for me, but none of them did the trick. Do you have a suggestion as to how I can fix the file? Or maybe you, or someone reading this thread, could email me a clean version of the file that I could try and install in place of the (apparently) corrupted version?

I've made extensive modifications to my default nations, so creating a nations file you can use would be difficult for me.
