Historical League questions
How do you guys get the most realistic player ratings when starting a historical season? Do yo use Re-calculate player ratings using real stats? or using the ootp engine to come up with ratings? Thanks!

I prefer 1 yr recalc and real stats. For me 3 yr hurts SP like Eckersly & Smoltz when they became CL.

I like recalc 3 year dev on but I like there to be some mystery about when a player will be good and how good he will be. That appears not to be your goal, so I suggest single year recalc for your situation. Real isn't "real" in the commonly understood meaning of the word. It's neutralized to the game's park factors. Obviously on multi year there's a smoothing of the performance highs and lows but this happens on single year too. On single year ratings for years of "outlier" performances ratings are reduced. Consider 1961. Maris hit 61 HRs and Mantle hit 54. Both are reduced because they're "outlier" years but Maris' is more of an outlier for him than Mantles is for him (compared to their next highest HR years). So Maris gets reduced more and even on single year ratings Mantle will usually hit more HRs than Maris. You didn't mention neutralized but I'll say here don't use it. The neutralized file is neutralized against something other than the game's park factors. There are two threads in the historical forum dealing with these issues. They have a lot of additional information. https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...d.php?t=331958 https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...d.php?t=331438 |

Everything Brad wrote above is on the mark. The only thing I would add is that you might want to pick the settings that sound like the way to go for you, and then run a test version. Don't immerse yourself in the day-to-day results, news items, and so forth. Just run it for maybe 20 or 30 years, at least (turn off things like story lines, coaching system, game logs...). And then start looking at team results and individual player statistics, and see if it's in the ballpark of what you want.
The reason for this is because that LAST thing you want to do is start a sim, totally immerse yourself and spend weeks or months (of your real time) on it, only to find out that the game isn't doing what you want in terms of historical results, stats & direction. And then, if you're not liking the results and want to radically overhaul, or just tweak stuff, you can post here again and get more advice

Absolutely yes on a test version. Something I didn't do when I started and should have. (I didn't know thehef then!!!)
Also for the test version even if you're considering things like dev on and talent change randomness on for the real thing, turn them off for the test. I like playing with them on but when you're testing the output they introduce noise. |
